hi guys, juz wanna ask u for ur advices...

i know u guys ride TDM but do u know which is better?

TDM, African Twin or ST 11??

which is easier to maintain, better power n speed?

Posted

I think it all boils down to how u want to use it cos I believe all 3 bikes have some good points themselves.

If you want to know more on TDM, this is the right place.

My TDM 02 model.

FC = 22km/L

Highest speed even tried = 205km/hr with Maxia 52 topbox. (still can but i scare...)

Have not tried with my Krauser panniers yet.

Maintainence = so far nothing major

Given the 3 choices, I still go for the TDM..

i dont ride any of the abovementioned. However, my favourite is TDM for it's fuel efficiency. In other words, low consumption. For details, the riders will fill in or u can go thru this thread.

Came across this interesting thread on MO of magnets for improvement of fuel efficiency by placing magnets around the fuel line. Especially useful for FI bikes. It seems that the thread starter, ktkt, had a 60km improvement per tank of 15L, from 230 to 320. Magnets cost $2 each, need to work in pair.

http://www.singaporebikes.com/forum/index....showtopic=65354

Wonder if any tdm'ers tried it and bring the efficiency to 28 or maybe 30km/L?

I enquired at the Yamaha importers in Upper Paya Lebar Rd a few weeks ago, new price was about 18,000 but they had no stock and the new model is only arriving at around November! So I bought their second hand 2003 model (17,000 km). They did say some dealers may have second hand models.

By the way a new Fazer 1000 is exactly the same price as a new TDM900.

l believe these 3 bikes were design for diff uses thus can't really compare them. though never own any AT of ST11 but had kakis that own & i had tried them on trips so i will comment on the ride.

AT - great dual purpose bike that can almost ride like a scram on the corss terrian but its design & engine is kinda out dated, it is still using a carb thus lower fc & power. the good thing is easier & less costly incase (touch wood) need big time repair. for a 750cc & its price tag it is way under power torque also not there, kinda boring to ride on normal road. though its seat is comfy & engine is smooth, too smooth, it just does pump up any adrenaline, simply not my knida ride.

ST11 - old horse but very comfy for trips. didn't buy cos again it not my kinda bike 'cos find it heavy & no rev gear so need to much cosideration when looking for parking. plus kinda big to ride to my wok place cos heavy traffic me have diff going inbetween cars, well maybe its just me. the comfort, power & ability to criuse at high speed make it 1 of the best tourer of its time. but again with its design & weight some find it difficult to kup coner thus lossing sh*t load of fun.

TDM - its not as comfy compare to the 2 honda but in term of ride it definately has loads more fun. change the wind shield & it make a great for trips. cruising @ 150km/h - 180km/h is a breeze. with its 270 degree para twin efi engine it gives u the torque of a twin n smoothness of in-line engine. with its unusally good fc, up to 25km/L, it gives less worry while travlling. its is more nible on the street & i have more confident going inbetween cars compare to the 2 hondas. no prob on rides through simple cross terrian & at the same time can kup all the coner u want. read through this thread & u will notice it is a very versatile bike. wat more can u ask for from a bike machine price onli $16,000?

all said it is still up to u as every1's ride & taste is diff. that's y many makes & design in the market. remember to listen to ur heart & not comments (usually lousy/sour comments) from others, ultimately its ur $$ not his nor mine :goodluck:

anyone tried both tdm and v-strom 1k b4? both are great bikes in the similar sense, assuming that a benchmark is set using the v-strom with the reviews below, hopefully can hear some feedback / opinion on the tdm by comparing the 2 with an open approach

a) v-strom seat is solid for the rider, after 200km, pillion alights with a smile too. tdm seat is narrower, but an issue for longer distances?

b) personally v-strom vibrations is quite a bother for as i am used to in line 4, the tee-kee pillion will complain slightly abt the vibrations from the pegs. is tdm smoother?

c) some 02/03 v-stroms has an issue with chudders at somewhere ard 3k to 4k rpm range, some attribute it to the clutch basket problem. do tdm face a problem in a similar aspect? did not come across any complains as such in the tdm forums, sounds enticing :D thanks for reading, tdm-ers

Hi there, I've not ridden a vstrom b4 but you might want to pop over the international vstrom forum site under their singapore chat section. Our local vstrom owners are very active there. There's a objective comparison between the TDM and the vstrom there. I ride with many of them and we both know the pros and cons of both bikes. Not one is better than the other lah... Of course I made my choice and prefer the TDM still.

a) v-strom seat is solid for the rider, after 200km, pillion alights with a smile too. tdm seat is narrower, but an issue for longer distances?

TDM seat is obviously smaller but I do not have issues with it. I also don't hear of angmos in other countries complaining abt it either. As long as you do not have a 'big butt', it will fit you fine. Take note that TDMs are not available in US, so it lacks reviews from that part of the world. I do not take a pillion on touring trips and many TDM riders don't too. Hard to comment on pillion comfort...in SGP riding it is good so far.

b) personally v-strom vibrations is quite a bother for as i am used to in line 4, the tee-kee pillion will complain slightly abt the vibrations from the pegs. is tdm smoother?

The parrallel twin engine design of the TDM incorporates the best of both worlds (inline4 & v-twin) Smoothness almost to that of an inline 4 but with the torqueyness & sound of a vtwin. Its the smoothest of any 2 cylinder bikes out there but please dun compare it with an inline4.

c) some 02/03 v-stroms has an issue with chudders at somewhere ard 3k to 4k rpm range, some attribute it to the clutch basket problem. do tdm face a problem in a similar aspect? did not come across any complains as such in the tdm forums, sounds enticing thanks for reading, tdm-ers

TDM is a very mature model if you notice. It has gone through 3 generations with each generation lasting at least 5 years. Yamaha does not churn out TDMs for the sake of doing so to meet market demands. The TDM900 has been out for 4 years now with little changes (only added immobiliser and ABS recently) No recalls whatsoever. You have been reading overseas forum, so you should have a good feel about the TDM. Some owners overseas experienced early batch ECU issues and clutch squeal. You might want to read more to see if that bothers u.

In short no bikes are perfect. For me, the TDM is a well designed bike with excellent build quality.

i think the ST is in a different league althogether...to basis of comparison with the AT and TDM.

As for the 2 latter...it's really a matter of personal preference...

i feel the AT is better apt for a little off road despite it being heavier than the 900.

its also between yamaha and honda...which one you prefer...i mean their engines.

i find the honda workhorse a tad more refined having owned 2 hondas previously...

having said that, the TDM is great for commuting and touring, the AT have a higher and harder seat, tube tires and dated looks...

but then..not everyone likes the looks of a TDM

would round off with this quote

"You have travelled to places others have not ventured....You read books that others have never heard of....You see humour in unusual places. And you've always gone your own way. Why, then, should you ride a bike that's like all the rest?"

Chain and sprockets.

My chain is almost to its maximum length and I have to change it. Heard and read that its best to change sprockets + chain together.

My mileage to date is abt 37k km. Maybe I ride a little to hard or i should lube my chain more often..

Anyways, I got a friend (mechainc) to get the original sprockets as he couldnt get any after market ones.. The crazy HL guys claimed to have the manual and quoted a 13 tooth front sprocket... After several phonecalls, they admitted to their error and gave me the original (16 tooth)...

Moral of the story is be careful when you are buying stuff. Always check the manual so these sales ppl cant pull a fast one on you.

Also got a DID X ring, wonder how long will this last.... hahhaaa....

Gave a thumbs up to a TDM with panniers on today along PIE, in the direction of the Changi. Somewhere after NTU.

Sorry I was in a rush, didnt look carefully but I think its a 04 or 05 model with black frames!!!:lovestruck: :lovestruck:

Rider looks like a young chap, late 20s, early 30s type.. Hopefully you are on this forum?? Maybe if you work in Tuas we can go for lunch cum petrol top ups... hehehee

if i am not wrong, i saw 2 tdms and 1 female phantom rider @ j.west st 51 market carpark in the evening...is it any of u guys? :)

Both TDMs have pannier, only 1 have a top box.

No aftermarket manufacturers have come up with a larger tank for the TDM. The original 20l tank is sufficient for a total range of 480km riding constantly at 90-100km/h. This should be pretty good already. If you want to increase capacity, just add a spare tank on the luggage rack like this http://www.tourtank.com/index.html

Technically speaking, any pannier can be mounted on any bike as long as you have someone to make the frame to suit your bike. If yappiez can fix the krauser panniers on (which does not have a dedicated krauser rack for the TDM), Touratech zegas should not be an issue at all. The frame is similar to H&Bs.

embryo, not me for sure hahaha. If you see a alibaba bag loaded on a TDM with me carrying a fullpack, then its me o_O

That is correct.

Nothing is I M P O S S I B L E.

I just returned from Koh Samui this morning. At one stretch I was doing 150-170 to catch up and my milage is around 15.26km/hr.

I think my panniers are slowing me down.... :weep:

Other than that all was good for the trip.:cheer:

Oh yeah I got my Thai made Corbin Seat made! A bit harder and higher than expected but I think it should be better after a while. Will post a pic to make you guys drool when I can..... kakakaekekekee

Added some sponge to support the inner thighs as the original seems too narrow. After about 300 km my butt feels a little sore...
