Hi yappiez....

I thought the same about pushing bike back to bikeshop might fetch prices that are close to the "market rate" or the intended selling price..when I wanted to sell my previous bikes for a change in ride. How wrong could I be? very wrong. I have been offered prices so low that I would just walked away in disgust... but now I realise it is how the market works out there.

Its a shop eat rider world out there... trade-in offer are only about 60% of the seller's intended selling price or the seller's perceived market rate. Most times seller will use the similar used bike's priced by bikeshop as the "market rate".

Bikeshop will only take it at 60-65% of the shop's intending offer price because all shops have overhead to maintain, not to mention the "discount" they need to give to potential buyers, the storage fees, throw in new tyres, change small parts this and that to entice buyers.. some cases they have to transfer ownership to the shop and renew road tax for unpopular models before the bike is sold.

Add all these... 60% of the offer price will be the bikeshop's take-in price. maybe 5-10% higher if you trade-in.

Perception is all that is enough to determine the market. If potential buyers think bikes depreciates at high value and should have low re-sale.. then this is the market.

What could sellers do? Very much nothing... unless u lower prices.. or embark on a mass education program to instill the thinking that bikes are valuable properties and should have low depreciates and good resale value. Or else' its back to buyer's "thinking" that determines the market.. and of course the seller's willingness to sell or just don't sell... if you don't sell.. the cheapest a buyer can pay is the price for a new bike.

Its like studying the economy... hehe... interesting.

Again just my opinions and experience to share.

That fact the owner loses 6k just after 1 year with all those accessories makes it a super deal for the next buyer. However, many other buyers will then think that the bike depreciates at a high value and re-sale value is lousy. Other buyers will also start to think they can get this bike at this price and will be only interested if sellers are offering them at this price.

at this kind of price, i'm sure you can push the bike into any reputable shop and they will snap it up and re-price it 2k more and sell it.

Of course, the owner can sell at any price at the end of the day, take this as a discussion to understand more how the market works. I might be wrong but I am also interested to learn more too.
