Hi blackX. Let me try to clarify (sorry if you already know).

Most overhead cam(shaft) 4 strokers uses cam chains driven by the crankshaft to actuate the valves . other such as Ducati uses desmo, yet others uses push rods etc).

The vfr vtecs (post 01er) uses this; hence the cam(shaft) is "driven" by chain. But strictly speaking, it is driven by the crankshaft, via the cam chain.

The 5th gen (98-01) vfr uses a series of cam gears instead of cam chain to do the same valve actuation.

Hence the correct terminology should be "chain driven cam(shaft)" or "gear driven cam(shaft)" as opposed to "cam driven" as mentioned by you.

As the cam chain stretches with use, it slackens and gives rises to mechanical noises and in severe cases, affect the accuracy of the valve timing. Cam chain tensioners are designed in to take up some of this slack. but with time the stretch exceeds the ability of the tensioner and hence it need to be replaced.

On the other hand, cam gears does not suffer this stretching so it eliminate the problem of stretching.

Hope this confuses you more keke :cheeky: cheers

ooo... u're rite, i remembered it d other way round... thkz for enlightening.. :thumb:

correct me if im wrong, '06 vtec onwards, d vtec valve open earlier abt 6400rpm rite? before was abt 6800rpm..

n vfrvtec is cam driven rite? therefore d 'tia tia' sound is quite normal yah? :cheeky:

Correct bro. The '06 VTECs open at 6400 RPM & closes at 6100 RPM... The transition is a bit smooth. Although, you don't get to open it often on Singapore roads unless you're tia-ing another vehicle....hahahahahha!!

But anyhow, my mileage has improved when I open the VTEC less often. Now averaging 16.7 - 17 km/litre.

Hi DD

Forgive me if I jump to conclusion, while Qs & As are great for learning and discourse, I suspect that you may not be ready for a superbike class. I'm not being condescending but ppl could get hurt with the kind of output these bikes can put out esp the all out sportbikes whose power characteristics are very peaky compared to the VFR which starts low and grows linearly. What that intrepret into is that you can be caught off caught when you twist the throttle hard on a sport bike - and believe you me after 30yrs of riding these new sport bikes bikes still scare be shitless.

Incidentally, what are you riding at the moment?

Currently now im riding GSR400. Seriously VFR hp is really just nice for me cause like what u say the hp is different from those superbikes. I dont really need a high power bike....

Agree with vfrt

I use to own inline 4(mostly), 1 or 2 v-twin and only 1 v4(magna750)

the return feeling of the VFR reminds me of the magna but with more power

and I had no regrets in buying it.

If you (DenverDino) feel the only reason for not buying is because the parts are expensive, then I would suggest you think carefully before making any more decision.

Buy what you like and want.

my 2 cents

I dont see i cant afford any servicing on my bike lor... cause my GSR servicing is not much different from those big bikes already. and fyi i just need to understand more thing on this VFR mah. Cause when i bought my GSR i never collect any detail at all... after riding then i start to learn from all my senior and some more this GSR is my very first bike. so this time round i want to find out more thing before buying it mah...:cheeky: So can you kindly guide me...thanks.

Hi, experienced VFRiders,

Sorry to interrupt your thread.

I am newbie here. Newbie to VFR.

Can I ask how can I obtain a copy of the bike manual?

I am trying to check onemotoring.com for the registration date of my new ride, but am having problem accessing the onemotoring.com website now.

So I can't confirm the correct date of registration of the VFR I bought yesterday.

I bought it at 2nd hand.

The owner of the bike shop whom I spoke to, said that it is a 1-year old bike, which was owned previously by a Malay uncle who paid in full for it. He was the first owner. (Crap to me as I have heard all these sentences too many times. They are just sales gimmicks.) Plate number is as below in my signature. The bike manual didn't come with it.

I took it out for a short ride last night to Tanjong Pagar to meet my friends for prata and la-kopi-session.

(1) When I turned my key on, have not start the bike yet, the ABS red light showed up. Is this normal? Sorry, cos for my previous Yamama ride, when I turned my key on, the needles in the speedo and the rpm meter will turn one full round and come back to "0", then the EO, ABS, etc. lights will go off after lighting up for a while. But for VFR, the ABS lights was lighted up but it did go off after a while after I start the bike by pressing the ignition.

(2) Then when I was parking my ride last bight after returning home, the engine was hot and I think I heard the fan turning on, the EO light and the F1 lights was lighted up. I was "very concerned" about the EO and F1 lights lighting up, and quickly pressed the red-colour "ON-OFF" switch which cut ff the engine. The lights still lighted up, so I quickly turned off the key. After a while, I turned the key back on and ONLY the ABS light on the left side is lighted up.

(3) Also, normally, after you start your bike and let the engine runs, how long do you leave it there for the engine to warm up before riding off? I mean let it warm up to what temperature before riding off?

I was thinking if I can find a copy the bike manual, then at least I can read through it and see what is/are the problem(s)?

If cannot find, can I seek some advice(s) from you guys?

Sorry for the trouble.

Thank you very much in advance.

So you are the one that bought the VFR from Albert Motor???

Good move. Always check on a bike before buying it. Know what you want in a bike, be it for touring or for track. Know your budget then scout around.

I wanted the compromise of a V-Twin & Inline-4, comfortable touring-capable faired bike & large tank... I don't think anything comes closer than a VFR...

Only gripe about the VFR is that it's a HOT bike!! Try getting stuck in the Causeway & you'll find out.

I want to for touring more than track lor.... touring more fun and can see more thing. That time i saw at Albert Motor selling 1 VFR...1yr old selling at 15k but too bad i cant buy it...cause i haben pass my class2. hehehe... but tp coming soon. I only take my class 2 when i saw that bike then i cannot buy because my license. T.L....

Now i understand that VFR is V-twin engine then u say inline4 is it mean those sportbikes. I really dont know how hot is it.... i think this is the only problems on VFR beside that got not much problems, rite?

Dino,

VFR is V-Four. Two cylinders on either side of a V as opposed to one each on a V-Twin.

If you wanna tour & have fun on the twisties, then VFR would be the right choice. It's been around for 25 years.... Any major flaws would be ironed out by now. I just came back from Pahang 2 weeks ago and had major fun on the twisties of the KL-Karak highway.

Aside from the heat issue (not problem), I've not heard of any major issues with the bike.

To sum it up for you, I'll just say that VFR is a highly capable, well built, all-rounder....

After riding the 06 R1, I can vouch that the VFR800FI (nonvtec) is aircon in comparison. I think the vTecs are also cooler that the R1 tho I hv not rode on one.

Dude,

my comparison is based on my current Viffer & my old Blackbird. It seems that the rear block of the V-Four is exposed between the frame & the tank. That's where the heat hits smack at my thighs...

Unlike Inline-4, the block is positioned forward, away from my legs...

Anyway, in a worst case scenario (like a jam at checkpoints in the afternoon), my engine still max out at 108 deg C, no more. The engine cooling quite efficient leh...

Hearing stories from Viffer bros, Blackbirds (No punt intended I think it is a great bike) a Busa was in a KL jam, the only bike that did not auto shut off was the Viffer, the bigger CC bikes was so hot they auto shut off. Interestingly the Viffer has 2 radiators mounted side ways and a third radiator of sorts under the front wheel arc under the lights.

According to what I read the Viffer has good cooling system.

as 1 of the wire harness connectors from my '00 bust and spilt open

and causes the whole bike to die and not able to start....

the whole connector inside was rusty

in the end i change the whole wire harness, ECU and the HISS receiver....

Same here. After riding a Yamaha Fabulous-Joy-Ride, I think the heat from a VFR is nothing compared to Yamaha bikes. Try getting stuck in a traffic-jam along Farrer road (going towards Thomson Road-AMK direction) where they are constructing the MRT Station. With the two side panniers, cannot squeeze through the traffic during the jam, my balls became BBQ meat balls sial... :(

:offtopic: : But heard the heat problem on a Yamaha Fabulous-Joy-Ride was "corrected" on the '08s and the heat was directed away from the riders' legs.
