Congrats bro.

What I did:

1. Think about what type of bike you really want (sportsbike, cub). I was looking for a naked bike, but ended up going with my heart and got an RS125. :)

2. Research used prices (I did mine in this forum)

3. Make a shortlist of the likely candidates

4. Get an idea of insurance cost (I called up NTUC, they're really friendly over the phone)

5. Talk to an experienced friend (Mine saved me almost $500 and got freebies thrown in)

6. Buy the bike!

Ride safe fellow P-plater!

Props for asking first before buying - there are many, many bike shops who are more than willing to mark up the price significantly for good, solid machines, and sell the crap ones that break down all the time for a 'reasonable' price.

As far as possible, novices should pick a bike with decent power, forgiving handling and simple maintenence. Sportsbike may not be the best place to start since there is the tendency to be absorbed into contests of top speed, fast cornering and the eventual "incident" with other motorists or nature.

In more militant terms, it's better to practise shooting with an AK47 that's nigh indestructible and can fire a million rounds without jamming, than getting some fancypants fantasy weapon that requires disassembly and overhaul every five magazines.

AK47-like bikes with an emphasis on functionality include cubs, phantoms, cbf, rxzs, get them for cheap second hand and they'll be happy to serve you until you've got sick of them and want something with more power to get steady with. It's then when you've "upgraded" that you'll find the humble workhorse more fun and not that much slower. After all, you can race Y125Zs and RXZs very successfully once you've gotten the hang of them :3

Cheap indestructible firepower ftw. I ride 10,000km in 3 months and I don't need no hangar queens :3

I thought Yamaha 125Z was good - run on highway on lane 1 every day never complained. But overhaul every 1.5 years due to the nature of 2 strokes.

Then I got a 8 year old, 4 times owned Phantom from literally, the scrapyard and omg, the thing doesn't need a single screw tightened no matter how hard and far you ride. And keeps getting faster and faster :D

Save the money for better things... such as a Class 2A license, or even better, class 2 and get to poke at truly legendary machines. Class 2B is not for showing off yet :D

If you're young chap, most probably you will be interested in sportbike, as majority does. However, a streetbike is a good choice. Decent power, handling, okok repairing, and some weight. Pulsar is a good choice!

My opinion would be to get a used bike from da shop or forum. Watever bike it may be, as long as da price is reasonable u can grab it. Bike = commitment. So try to go easy on getting ur 1st bike.

Past rides:

1st ride : Vespa PX150

2nd ride : Honda Wave 125

3rd ride : SYM GTS 200

4th ride : Honda Super 4 Spec 2

5th ride : Derbi DRD 125 SM

Current ride : :dot:

just like what the rest said, most important dont rush to buy. view a few bikes and test them a bit, before deciding.

nothing beats a phantom. my 2b bike. sitting posture is relaxing.
