OMG. I went to R*g*n* looking to buy the A* S MX R tonight and ended up trying the A* Supertech R instead. Jebus. That shoe is the business! It felt SO much nicer than anything I've tried and is fully perforated and has a madhouse MotoGP scheme (it looks like camo, but is made of individual MotoGP tracks coloured in). I cannot imagine spending S$5X0 on anything nicer. I bought them tonight and couldn't be happier. Actual price paid will be kept confidential, but bear in mind the A* online store has the Supertech Rs retailing at US$450 (S$600), so R*g*n* do a pretty good deal on them. I'm wearing my boots in the house watching tv now, and feet feel pampered.

crankcase, sorry these are not waterproof, which makes my post off-topic. But cmon! You'd show them off too if you were me, admit it!

Hahaha... glad you're enjoying your purchase, they really look like they mean business ;) I especially love the motogp tracks pattern!!

I wear my boots every time I went out by bike (which means pretty much every time every where except when it's raining or I'm drinking), so they're a bit flash for my needs... but good to see you're loving them so much :thumb:

I guess they're in between at the moment. I will wear them everytime I ride as I only ride Sunday early mornings for leisure (I took up motorbiking for the sole purpose of leisure, not transport). You're absolutely right - they are flash, but aren't over the top provided you don't tuck your pants into the boot. I paraded around my lounge last night with jeans worn over the boot, and they aren't bad. I think my flouro yellow Nike walking shoes are more attention grabbing! Also, while they may look tough on the feet, they are actually very comfortable. The whole construction is very smooth with minimal flashy or shiny bits (unlike the Sidi, which is very space-age and has lots of contrasting red-on-black and exposed screw heads!).

The next plan is to build up more road time and then move on to the track early next year. I figured I might as well buy track-ready gear that I can wear on the roads. Plus I'll get used to wearing them, so there isn't going to be the gear-unfamiliarity issue when I do go to the track. I'm lucky in that the usual logistical and convenience issues with adopting ATGATT in Singapore don't apply since the ride is purely for leisure.

Good luck with your purchase. Will be great to know if you actually do get the TCX and what you think of it.

But I don't like the colour, and other place to check out puma shoes?

So this weekend I finally bit the bullet and bought a pair of TCX Air Tech boots. I went back to Chong Aik first to try the Strada Mega Gore, but they seemed just a smidge too small, despite being size 46. To be fair, the label did say they correspond to US size 11.5 not 12, which seems about right.

I got the TCX on Saturday afternoon from the Chiap Lee outlet on Serangoon Rd, at $250 after a bit of negotiation. Put them on immediately to test them in the scorching Saturday afternoon heat. My reference for comparison is my previous (and only) pair of biking boots: Puma Roadster V2 GTX

http://www.cyclekin.com/shop/img/1/8635.jpg

And these are the TCX Air Tech

http://www.newenough.com/image/path/13565/TCX-AirtechGTX_XCR.jpg

A few initial impressions, not necessarily in any meaningful order:

  • The sizing seems to be more appropriate - I can fit comfirtably into a size 45, which is the same as my street shoes. In comparison, my Pumas are 46, and the Sidi would have needed 47 (which Sidi makes, but Chiap Lee doesn't stock).
  • The fit isn't as 'snug' as the Pumas, and the material doesn't seem as keen to mould to my feet as leather does. But then I've only been wearing them for a couple of days, so I'll give them time to break in properly. The upside is that there does seem to be more room for my toes, which were a bit cramped in the Pumas
  • The toe cover is noticeably higher, which makes changing up the gears a little trickier. I hope I'll get used to it soon as well
  • Breathability is all right. I don't feel like my feet are suddenly air conditioned, but they don't feel suffocated either
  • That said, the fabric-like material of the shoes doesn't inspire as much confidence in terms of protection, as a leather shoe does. I hope I don't really have to test them on that aspect :)
  • I haven't walked around in them too much, but so far they seem comfy enough. More so than the Sidi Strada Mega, which had a narrower heel and seemed less suited to walking
  • Same goes for the waterproofing - no chance to try it yet. However, I do note that the GoreTex lining runs all the way around instead of leaving out the sole (which it did in the Pumas). This is a variation I've noticed in many hiking and biking boots - not all have a full GoreTex lining, and it seems to be a critical difference, and something to bear in mind if you are looking for a good waterproof shoe. I will post pics for comparison when I get a chance.

On the whole, I'm fairly satisfied at this early stage. In any case, these seem to be among the cheapest high cut waterproof boots you can get, so if the quality turns out to be even halfway decent, they will be good value. Fingers crossed!

That depends on whether you're only planning on walking, or riding with them also ;)

Vendramini Puma Boots

My partner and I wear these, confirmed waterproof.

Available only online, so you have to get your sizing right. The sizing for me is exact (i.e. no + or -1 size).

http://www.motoworldonline.com/assets/images/Apparel/Vendramini/VendraminiPumalarge.jpg

It's low cut so it's very comfortable. Also quite sleek so you can wear it under your pants.

Including delivery it cost us about S$350.

Hmmm, both...

I'd recommend something relatively low cut (ankle height at most), because taller boots are not usually as comfortable to walk around in, due to the limited ankle articulation.

Apart from that bit of general advice, I unfortunately can't offer much cos I've never tried shopping for ankle cut boots myself, but I did see some nice models from Komine & others at Motoworld. Could be worth checking out. Otherwise you can try the usual suspects - Regina, Chong Aik & Chiap Lee... these should give you a decent starting idea of what's available and the sort of price ranges you're looking at. Perhaps other members here can suggest 'lesser known' bike shops that might be willing to offer better deals...?

Good luck, keep us updated on what you find!

I also believe in ATGATT, as I rarely ride my bike too.

Hey thanks lacrimosae. Nice to hear that from a fellow RS rider. Also nice to know that, if we ever have an RS gathering, I won't be the only one ATGATT-ed up!

The boots fit great, are comfortable, look stunning on their own, and actually look subdued (I think) when I have my riding jeans over them. As silly as it sounds, somedays when I get back home after work, I'll either put on my A* GP Pro or the Supertech R just for fun. When my wife looks at me funny, I tell her I need to do so to break them in. But secretly I just put them on because I really really like them. :) I'm happy to show them to you if you like. I'm in the Lavender area if you'd like to drop by.

Update after a few days of use: the boots are definitely getting more comfortable as they start to break in, but I'm beginning to have some misgivings about their waterproofing. I wore them out to lunch yesterday cos it was raining quite heavily... and when I got back, there were some damp patches on my socks! My feet weren't soaked through, but then I only walked around for 10 mins or so. I'll reserve judgement until I've ridden in the rain with them, but at the moment the signs are not encouraging...
