How fast is fast? I need you to explain me the benefits for a family who does day to day internet surfing and PC gaming. My mum asked me to get it because everyone is getting it, but looking at the plans, its super expensive and i don't really see a need to improve the connection any further because of my understanding stated earlier.

Hmm..

People who see huge improvement are those that typically have more than 1 or 2 computers at home on the Internet

or if you want simultaneous activity - say stream North American radio in your hall while your siblings do Youtube in the room, and perhaps a parent is on an iPhone through WiFi playing some games. And all of you do not notice any lag at all while on Fibre internet.

Or, say if you pay to watch online movies or TV shows. I've got friends that beam internet movies through their HDTV. And those movies don't come small. They're HD sized

===

So at the end of the day, ADSL is very stable (sans the phone interference if any), but in this digital age, especially 2011, everybody's hungry for speed. That's where ADSL can get left behind.

Pick the best provider based on reviews if you're keen on upgrading :)

I'm using Starhub, some basic plan, dunno what. Cable connection. There are 2 desktops, 4 laptops and 3 smart phones. And none of us feels any lagg seriously. Gaming is normal, watching youtube is normal, everything is normal. Siblings stream stuff, download stuff, game, but we don't feel anything getting slower. Everything is connected wirelessly.

Is this because we are USED to it or is it really not problematic at all?

This is exactly why i am sceptical of fibre.

So far so good for me.

The only thing that I've seen about others, and also myself are:

- Singtel 2wire black modem (5012NV) keeps dropping Internet connection, "Internet" light goes red.

- Starhub and M1's Huawei wireless modem (HG256) is crappy, malfunctions shortly after a year.

- M1 required a user to go to M1 shop if they want to buy their own wireless modem.

- Another user had to stick to 2wire modem because Singtel hard-coded settings that also provided functionality to his phone line -- he signed up for Singtel fibre + new phone line, and both goes through the 2wire modem

And these issues are related to the wireless modem, so far I have not heard about issues relating to the Optical Network Terminating box (ONT is another piece of equipment that plugs directly into the fibre connection on your wall).

Will update if there's any issues.

I have signed up for the Singnet Fibre eXplore Home 200.

Once it is up will update on how it is light.

Anyway it's free for 6 months so I will maintain my Starhub MaxOnline Express for a while.

I have also read some users bridged the 2wire with a router with vLan to use the Singtel DV. I suppose that is a way to work around it.
