Currypuff: Ohlins have excellent results on sports bike. So great that when one talks about shocks, Ohlins are the first that comes to mind. I have read an article comparing all different brands of shocks, try to find that article. Ohlins was not the the highest rated, they probably do much better in races.

NA: Beemers are more appropriate. Bimmers refers to cars. Btw, ur HP2 was an eye opener! :thumb:

Yeah, great meeting u guys. Let's keep this going! :bounce:

wah u guys still got the energy to log on and write to last nite's.

Anyway it was great to see the faces to those nicks.kitto,NA,jojo, yem and all.it was fun to listen to ur travel experiences and stories.u guys r an adventurous lot ,really pushing ur BMWs and urselves to the fullest.the furthest i've 'touched' was MUar.heehee.and wat can i say bout ur 'toys'.The HP2? freaking awesome in person.bloody headturner, man.the GSadv..drooll drool saliva dripping.

typo about the ohlins. It's Sporting Motors that have them.(i wrote Stamford).wilbers are great too.kitto said can get for $800+ frm mteknic.i found Hyperpro rear springs for the GS1100 at Motorworld and they are not moving off the shelves.a great find.it goes for $220 a piece and i plan to put it on.

i got lobang for rebuilding my shocks: Bikelab. Called and asked if they got experience in doing stock beemers shocks n they said yes.they've done GSes and RTs.Hooray! $280. I knew it can be done.the guys at advrider.com say can.haha.k will try to make on the next meetup.

Exhaust? Strange that you should mention because I just changed mine yesterday. :D

Oh man, was it hard work! After 10 years and 100k, everything has seized up and stuck tight. Prying the parts loose was a real b***h, although the steps are simple enough.

I guess an exhaust mod is so popular because it is just so visible and audible. Immediate difference. Some mods you can't even feel it (like brakes?).

OK, back to shocks. Every article I read says a quality aftermarket shock is the best upgrade you can make, since the OEM is usually of inferior quality and would have lost its dampening function by xxx miles (different people give different figures).

COLOR]

So u put on new pipes.Brand? what's the "Immediate difference" ?

my ride is harsh too.the engine is smooth, thats for sure but the pogoing and wallowing to every bump is getting on my nerves.shodding new shocks is the best upgrade buti cant spend much money on doing my bike hence all the alternatives on getting improvements

Sorry guys, didn't manage to catch up with you guys. Juz saw the thread but its a little too late, though.

Hope you guys had a great time yesterday. Anyways, juz got a call from PML few days back.

My appeal got through, but I have to pay 20% (of 3K) + labour for ABS replacement. Should be a good deal right?! What do you think?!

Good to hear about the "good news", it would have been better if the 20% wasn't thrown in.

Personally, if the ABS servo cost $3k as a replacement part then the 20% is better than getting hit with the full $3k. I think you could just bite the bullet and get a replacement for the peace of mind.

Was wondering if you have given some thoughts for Songkran? Hope you know who am i....

To the rest, i would have loved to be able to catch up with everyone on this thread last nite. I have been a lurker all these while but would love to meet everyone here to put a face to the usernames here.

Too bad that this Saturday was a working Saturday for me.....

I think its a good deal since the fault actually started when the warranty expired.... they can reject outright. Hope they give some warranty for the parts changed. good luck :)

Hey guys...

I think Songkran is out for me. I met an accident yesterday at West Coast. My handlebar got caught on its rear left side of a lorry during a left turn. He made a wide angle turn, and I was suddenly in his blindspot. I couldn't get out of the situation and got dragged at least a good 5m before coming to a stop and fell. Suffered bruise, cuts and laceration but I'm ok.

Don't ask about my bike, I have a burning sensation my pockets already...

First ABS and now this... Must bath flower water liao...

I am very careful in a turn because some drivers just can't seem to stick to their path, straying into the outer lane.

In an S curve like the one near Dhoby Ghaut, some drivers just cut straight across like a dollar sign. IMO, driving habits have always been bad and seems to be getting worse. I witness dangerous driving almost everyday.

Spyder, what sort of diagnostic did PML do? Can they be 100% sure that the ABS is beyond repair. Although $600 sounds a lot better than 3K, if I have to fork out that amount, I would try to at least get a second expert opinion.

As for the accident, are you not able to determine who is at fault? Can you not claim from the lorry driver?

Hey Enjoy. Do you remember any key words in that article about shocks comparo? Will be easier to Google with some reference words.

Mamat, my silencer is from GPR. It seems like everyone in Singapore is installing one. :(

I got it as part of the wheel swap I had with Bikerblues. Pics have been posted here before.

Advantage?

Sound! :D

When I first got the R, I really dislike the weedy exhaust note. Though as time passes, the WWI fighter engine sound grew on me.

But after installing the GPR, wow, what a difference!

The low thumping tone when idling and accelerating is wunderbar! Sounds a little like a Harley but not so obnoxiously loud with the baffle in place. Just nice for city riding, me thinks.

However, on the NSH above 120km/h, the sound is drowned out by the wind. Will remove the baffle on the next long trip to listen to the difference. :cheeky:

Truth be told, I am now quite addicted to the sound and can't forsee myself going back to the original muffler. Mamat, at the next meetup, you can go for a little spin on my bike to listen for yourself if you like.

Weight

Mine's titanium so definitely much lighter than stock. I didn't weigh it so don't have the figures. I guess the GPR is between 1/2 to 1/3 the weight?

I can immediately feel the weight difference the first time I got on. However, by the second day, I have got used to it and don't feel the "lightness" anymore, except when pushing and putting it on the main stand.

This is because the R1100R is such an easy bike to turn in the first place, due to its low CG. Another advantage of the boxer design.

Overall, I am happy that this is one aftermarket part that reduces weight instead of adding to the fat lady.

Disadvantage

Backfiring

When slowing down especially, there is the occasional backfire, again not unlike a Harley. Not those explosion like sounds from cars that wake up sleeping babies. Much softer. But still, it indicates that the fuel air mixture is not right, likely too lean. I am worried that this will have an adverse effect on the valves and other engine parts in the long run, so I plan to get a Techlusion to correct the fuel air mixture. See how one change leads to another? As I said to some friends before, bike modding is like a bottomless pit. No matter how much money you throw in, you can never fully cover the hole.

Looks

This is subjective. But with the big catalytic converter gone, there is an empty space between the engine and the rear wheel that looks odd to my eyes. No wonder Staintune is so popular.

Although the conventional muffler design is normal looking, it is still much neater than the slug-like original. Unfortunately, with the side panniers, most of the time you can hear it but not see it!

Space

Now where do I store the horribly bulky one-piece OEM exhaust? :(

Ok. No worries bout Songkran there will also be another. You concentrating on getting well and your are probably stronger to overcome the bruises, cuts and whatnots....

Important that you are well. Take good care.

Maybe your O2 sensor somehow managed to compensate for the leaness. I honestly have no idea. I once test rode another R with a Laser and the popping was there. Good for you that the problem corrected itself. Perhaps you can post in the Adv rider forum to see if anyone can give a better answer. It would be good to know.

For my bike, the ride is just like before the change, except for the sound and popping. No hesitation, no flat spot, no surging. And of course no power gain, as far as I can tell.

back firing is lovely...its music to my ears! :)

essentially its unburnt fuel in the exhaust system, the more straight through your system the more you get.

i really can't live without back fire, that popping turns me on and is a very impt criteria when i look for a used bike to buy.

i remember my triples popping all over the place as i shut off my throttle in 1st and 2nd gear after revving the titties of them.

so far, i have not been able to get the k to pop as its on the original pipes but my other twin with the cat converter removed back fires like mad...:)

Hey Blackie, you are really weird, you know that?

"Music" aside, the popping does indicate that the bike is not running optimally. I just hope the pulses will not have a negative effect on the engine. Will find out more.

Right now I am trying to research more on Y.S.S shocks. Not much info on them. If I could get them installed in Thailand, that would save a bunch in shipping and GST. ;)
