The canbus has a "safety" feature that only allows the under seat socket to power up any accessories that draw 5amps and below.... if you need it to draw anything above this 5amp limit, you will need to re wire the socket directly to the battery and place a fuse (10-15amp preferably) from the "live" wire.

Without doing this re wiring, stuff like your ciggy lighter motorised air pump, some GPS, fuel by pass cable will not work as the Canbus cuts off power supply, it acts like "virtual fuse".

Ic... Luckily the GPS only draw max 5 amp...

Finally got it to work liao.. The mistake was that i tapped the wrong wire! The brown colour wire under the seat is actually neutral! not live! That y it could not work... :sian:

Finally, the socket hidden beneath the fairing with cable ties holding it in place. This way, i can change the plug for different usage.

Hi all,

Bike went into a "pothole" and fork clamp broke. Rim is not damaged. My bike is under warranty.

Seeking everyone's advices, can this be replaced under warranty? Other damages were due to the fall.

This is certainly a first i have come across..... amazing how a pot hole or even a crash can cause the clamp to break!!!

I have heard of Yammie's frame cracking from a stationary bike drop..... but this IS BMW!!!

I say.... claim with everything you can like f650gs says medical...gear.... everything you can:dot:....... make a ruckus with PML / BMW...... :dot:

Hi, Kitty,

How are you?

I do not know if you made the observations in respect of bikes generally or BMW bikes. My own view is that BMW used to have a reputation for reliability. This I reckon would have been in the era of 1960s to 1970s when continental bikes are generally of poor build and finish, with the exception of BMW. However, most BMW fans will lay emphasis on the reliability part without considering the fact that it literally came at a price - BMW are sold at a premium above other makes. That I reckon was the reason why the Japanese bikes soon came to dominate the market; they could and did offer performance, reliability and value over the continental bikes. Where am I going with this?

I do not think that BMW has gotten more unreliable. However, the other brands have gotten more reliable and yet retain the lower-than-BMW prices and in that sense they are surpassing BMW. A trawl through the internet will speak volumes of failing final drives and ABS on BMW bikes; something unthinkable 20 years earlier. However, we must also realise that there are many units of bikes (BMW or otherwise) soldiering on without complaints by their owners.

The other thing is that BMW has always been innovative, and I think that the price for innovation is that the end-product are usually field-tested by the customers. To take an example, while I do not know the advantages that CANBUS offers, I do know that it reduces hands-on owner-serviceability, although I also recognise that it is a different issue from reliability altogether.

In fairness, I think the so-called advancements in electronics and gadgets are driven by competition and is prevalent for all manufacturers (except Royal Enfield :) ). What it means for me is that the R1200XX bikes are not very attractive for me because one of the joys of this hobby, i.e. working on the bikes has become very much reduced. Therein lies the attraction of an older BMW.

Sorry for the rambling; it's a rough day at work too.

Cheers

Hi all,

I went down to PML and spoke with the Cust Svc Exec. Was told that this was an "accident" and not claimable under warranty.

A simple search in Youtube will show my same exact bike doing jumps with their fork clamps not breaking into 2.

What give?

hi cat,

I am still the same...

anyway i am referring to most bike that came out this few years... the more sensors, electronics and funny stuffs it has, the more fragile it is.:sian:

additional joints causes fatiques.... 1 sensor breakdown normally causes the whole bike to go haywire. don't even want to talk about electronics... :cheeky:

i hate electronics and still prefer a carb bike then an EFI bike but its hard to get a modern day bike with carbs.

i was stuck on the road before due to a faulty fuel pump relay...now i carry a couple with me.

if my ABS unit were to fail, i would rip it out and go back to basics, as i know someone who has done it hands on...muahahaha

Hi papabread,

I am afraid I'm not able to give you any useful advice. But how does PML classify an "accident"?

In the layman sense, a traffic accident would involve knocking into something, crashing, falling and sliding on the road, etc.

When you hit the pothole that broke your clamp, did you sustain other damage? (drop your bike, etc) If you didn't and the bike did not sustain other damage, how can they label that as an "accident"?

This model of bike is built to be ridden off-road and should be able to withstand much harder impact than a pothole. As you said, lots of Youtube videos can attest to that. Is it convenient to state how fast you were going when it happened?

It sure sounds like a defective part to me. Maybe you should seek advice from your club.

Edit

Sorry, missed the part about your fall. So they are using that as an excuse for calling it an "accident"? Alamak, now it's 50/50. :(

It is short for endurance. The enduro events are VERY long, requiring quite a bit of endurance to complete the many thousands of miles.

Go for long ride tour I'll say it is good but for off road I'll say must go slow and look out, If riding HP2 it will be fun.

Check with PML see if you can claim.

All the best.

Dear friends...

As you know I just met an accident. And its been a awhile cos I have some issues with PML.

Here goes.

In general, my accident was a minor one. Making a left turn at less than 20kmn/h, Swipe by an lorry by the right side and fall on the left. Visually, only the handle bar, handguard, crash bar, boxer cover & pannier were damage.

Verdict by PML:-

Chasis bend. Damage 16K.

Now, what I am not happy about is not the amount incurred, but I was told that the chasis is BEND. WTF! I had both panniers on, and it actually cushion off the impact of the fall. I RODE BACK home & RODE to PML on my bike without any handling problem. Its not as if I was travelling 100km/h and involved in a collision. My bike is scratchless except for the protection accessories.

So how? If a GS ADVENTURE couldn't even take this kind of fall, what makes u think that the bike can even survive rough terrains with POTHOLES! I am already losing confidence in the bike and their services already.

What do you think guys?! Should a petition be reconsidered?
