Congrats Cyclop on getting your new bike...which colour did you pick and how much for the bike excluding ins? $39K?

I heard about the new stock arrivals too... saw the red one in the showroom a couple days back and reading all the positive reviews about it now...

Guess only a handful are coming this way.. read that some of the production assembly staff willingly cancelled their annual vacation just to keep up the production due to over demand for this bike!

The GS has just won the 2004 International Bike of the Year Award, voted by 12 of the world's leading bike magazine from 12 countries. Not that we'll ever know how true that is but its a "good" reference point.....hee hee. Advertising dollars does have strong influences....

just curious what were you riding before this?

1150GS? If not,

Have you considered that or the adventure model?

looking for feedback from owners of the GS Adventure. Is it worth paying extra for it..

I am primarily a sportbike fan. Brought up on RS125, RVF and GSXR. But all my kakis and I have all grown old a little and blasting down the road doesn't seem to appeal that much anymore, and the body's also not what it used to be.

I got an FJR a while ago. Fantastic bike it is but I don't find it to suit my riding style. I still like to throw the bike around a bit... old habit. The FJR though sporty, is a little on the porky side. I still believe that the bike must suit the rider, not the other way around.

Tried a couple of enduros, African Twins, TDMs, Valadero (all friends bike) and finally an Advanture. Love that one immediately, but found it too chunky. So when the new GS came about, it was GOD sent..... money down, no hasitation. Only thing was they only had the blue one left, for me, it gotta be the yellow.

But the Advanture is a fantastic bike. Get hold of the DVD "Long Way Round" by Ewan McGregor & Charlie Boorman. That's the ultimate endorsment for the GS!! It'll change the way you look at biking and bikes!!:thumb:

You experienced on the TDM and FJR before and you don't like them?

These are the 2 bikes I tot of getting, especially TDM, tot it's a "cheap" (cheapest in it's class) and fun bike for touring, at times, riding 1 tt's too expensive really heart pain, especially going off road, encounter bumpy roads and worry some idiots might disturb it when you park at oversea Hotel or HDB carpark.

My bike coming to 10yrs, I need a new bike (as old 1 waiting for spares will easily takes 1 month), hoping to get a bike like TDM, African Twin, Faser 1000, Diversion 900, Ducati Multistrada or R1200GS, beside Ducati and BMW, the rest seem very sianz, don't hv the "die-die must get" feeling, don't dream of them at night and don't even bother to look for Ah Long for loan.

God sent you the bike, I hope GOD sent me $, 2day is Monday, got to buy TOTO liao. Bye.

:cheer:

The TDM is a very light bike, a little too flighty for my taste. Drifts quite a bit in strong crosswind. On top of that, probably to control cost, its appointments and fit & finish is a little questionable. Me friends' bike ain't that old, about 2, and already seeing quite a bit of wear and corrosion. For me, if I intend to keep a bike for a while, I try to find one around that age to see its condition and see if I can accept that.

The FJR is an excellent bike by any standard...... but I find it a little tedious if I get too carried away. Quite a handful for me on say the twisty parts old Federal Highway to Kuantan if I average in the mid triple digits. On road like the NS highway and fast sweepers, its an absolute blast! It can hold its own against any bike out there. Even sportsbikes will find it difficult to break away from a FJR.

I see the range that you've listed is quite varied, from enduros to nakeds to tourers. Get one that really turns you on :thumb: We only come this way once!! It might take a while to put away enought to buy that dream, but its gonna be worth it :thumb:

Best of luck on the TOTO man:cheer:

Man...i had the most unpleasant experience (so far) last night with Bertha. Went to Plaza Singapura for the 1st time with it. Going up the car park, no problem, no need to pay, can go thru the gap. Looking for a parking space, no problem. Went for dinner, buuurpp. Went shopping for toiletries, groceris, see see look look, shiok. Went back to the bike to go home, bike still there, no twisted soul jealous of it, no inadequately-trained car drivers accidentally backed into it or grazed it. Put my stuff in the panniers, put on helmet, start the engine, and vrooom i go. Go down level by level until the exit where the ticket scanner is. Oooppss!! BIIG PROBLEM. There're two lanes. I was too fast going into the right lane. Saw there's no gap between the barrier for bikes to go thru. Look around, saw a sign "Motorcycles keep LEFT"! Dammit, only the left lane has the gap. There's a concrete barrier btwn left and right lane. And I'm on a downslope. Stop the engine, get down from the bike, wave at those cars behind me and motion them to go to the left lane since I'm blocking the right one, and then what else, attempt to pull my bike back up lah. It....was.....H..E..A..V..Y.

"See lah. who ask you to buy such a big bike. Serves you right."

"Oh god, why does this has to happen to me?"

"Maaan...those drivers must be laughing their ass off at me."

"Mmmpppffhhh...come on, mooove u big heavy ass...UUUrrrrrggghhhh"

And then out of the corner of my eyes, I noticed a van stopping at the side. The driver came out and walked towards me.

"Need help?"

Ahhh....my saviour...my hero.

He helped me pull Bertha up to the top of the slope, then we pushed it together to the side to let other cars pass. Has a short chat on how I ended up...well...like that.

haha. Then he told me he's a biker too. Oooooh...so he understands, he knows what it's like. I said thank you to him endlessly. Then he got into his van, we waved again at each other, and off he went.

I stood there for a while, shake my head, and laugh at myself, and the situation I got myself into.

While riding back home, I kept thinking abt what other things that can happen and how to deal with it. Like for example, u break down somewhere in MY, what can I do? Who can I contact? Even a simple thing like punctured tyre, I don't think there're many shops in MY catering to high-capacity bike. How am I going to get my tyre replaced? But then I was also thinking, there're so many other bikers who've toured M'sia, thailand, and probably even further up north even. So how do they handle it? How do they prepare for any...eventualities?

Any comments by anybody with any experiences?

Sorry uh, not cursing you uh.

Let me rephrase it....

You toured all the way to Ipoh. What if, let's say your engine suddenly won't start. Or something happens to your tyre, die die must change, got tyre repair kit also useless. Then how?

For me, I've already gotten the contact person # from BMW KL. But that's if I'm somewhere near there. what if I'm at....Terengganu (which I'm itching to ride to), or Perlis or Kedah?

Sigh...or am I worrying too much? Maybe I really should just cheong, worry later. haha :cheeky:

Personel experience, if possible, do not ride alone, especially in areas where service and support is lacking. Plus its more fun to ride with friends.

Tire mending kit is a must. For me and my pals, we split the load. A good tool kit, not the one that comes with the bike. A small air pump, and a couple of CO2 cartridge. A can of tire goo, the stuff that pumps this ruberise liquid and air into a tire to mend and inflate, messy and only effective for small puncture. a couple of chain links and clips for those bikes that are not shaft driven, spare main lamp bulbs, fuses. I know a guy who even carries a spare clutch cable.

And most important, and this happened to me, a set of tire iron. There was once when I had a bad tear on my rear tire, too big to patch.... so I took the tire iron, pop the tire off one side of the rim, and proceed to stuff the tire with grass and leaves. I was able to carry on for the next 40+km at about 30km/h before I found a shop. The uncle as me if I'm riding a cow :cheeky: :cheeky: But what matters was that the rim was preserved, no damage.

Don't forget to also pack a small first aid kit.:thumb:

There is a BMW emergency service 62923166(24 hour) in case your bike has broken down in Msia. Free towing from Msia to Singapore provided the repair has to be done by performance motor, I think this is good although the repair at performance motor a bit higher, but the toll can be sky high if arrange privately...

Those lever like thingie that the shop use to pry the tire off the rims. You'll need a pair. I got mine from my brother, sort of hand-me-down.
