Hahaha.. Dun mention it bro, I'll rem to claim the latte from u..

Yes, my new avatar nice? My friend took it for me with his DSLR... Love this pic lots!!

IMHO Concept bike = i.e. some smart aleck guy in Honda got an idea of his own n started submitting his drawings n finally got the greenlight to build it.. But unlike those MV Agusta daring to be different management, Honda's stored it based on their conservative mindset. So we can only drool on its pic n not the actual metals...

Big Naked bikes - A new phenomenon?

Posted on: November 22, 2000

"Naked bike” is a phrase that came up a few years ago. It describes a category of machines which are actually just big, conventional motorcycles without fairings or plastic covers. What is so special about them?

Just an archetypal motorcycle

From an engineering point of view there is nothing extraordinary about a naked bike.

30 years ago most new motorcycles were naked. Fairings and clip-on handlebars for street bikes were available as accessories, and these were only found on specialised machines owned by real enthusiasts. As technology advanced, the performance and top speed of these big bikes increased, and the manufacturers realised they had to offer wind protection. At first some manufacturers introduced a half fairing on the faster machines, and when the supersport class grew rapidly in the middle of the eighties, full fairings started to be fitted as standard equipment in this segment. And riders did appreciate it.

Japanese bikers started it

However, although fully faired bikes were quite special back in the eighties, their popularity grew rapidly and they became a common sight. Riders looking for individuality wanted to go back to "real metal machines”, with their simple and elementary looks. Japanese bikers modified their supersport machines in the early nineties by removing the fairing, fitting higher handlebars and making other modifications. The manufacturers soon recognised this new trend and launched bikes like the Yamaha XJR400 and Suzuki Bandit 400 which became extremely popular. This fashion for naked bikes reached Europe a few years later, and the leading manufacturers launched a range of naked big bikes.

Big bikes for Europe

The Yamaha XJR 1200 and Suzuki Bandit 1200 were two of the first big naked bikes introduced into Europe, are the amongst the most popular machines in the class. Then Ducati created their own concept with the Monster, and since then other models have followed. Kawasaki originally launched their Zephyr line which featured more emphasis on classic looks, and this range was followed by the more sporty ZXR-line. Honda launched their naked concept X11 at last year’s Paris show, with emphasis on modern looks. Triumph created a mix between streetfighter and naked bike with their Speed Triple, and BMW launched the R 1100 R with their newly designed boxer engine as a further modern/traditional concept. Last year even Cagiva introduced their own interpretation of the theme with the much more extremely-styled Raptor concept.

Major sellers today

The major sellers amongst the big naked machines are Yamaha XJR 1300, Suzuki Bandit 1200 and BMW R 1100 R, followed by Ducati Monster and Triumph Speed Triple.

Do they reflect the national character?

Naked bikes, more than other categories, seem somehow to reflect the national character. Almost two-thirds of the sales of the BMW R 1100 R are in Germany. The combination of modern / classic looks and the versatility of this machine seems to capture the interest of the German customers.

It’s a similar story in Italy, which accounts for about two-thirds of Ducati Monster sales. The more sporty and rugged character of the Monster appeals to the Italian biker, combing the performance and and riding sensation of a supersport Ducati with ease of use in normal traffic. Certainly the bike has created its own image and niche in the market.

But there is strong attack from Triumph. The Speed Triple - with its quite sporty set-up - is about equally popular in France and Germany and - of course - in England, where it outnumbers its Italian rival.

Big Bikes popular in Germany and France

The Suzuki Bandit and Yamaha XJR 1300 represent the "real big bike” and are most popular in France and Germany amongst experienced big bike riders who enjoy power and acceleration, but want a machine that also offers a relaxed, upright riding position combined with elementary and simple looks.
