i tried posting a reply 3 times already, keep getting that browser busy thing.. so here goes for the fourth time.

Hey Rebel,

i've riden my vara125 thru pelentong n endau rompin, n i agree w u that the scorpions r juz not good enuf. sure it may be fine on sand n grass, but the bike keeps fish tailin on soft ground n mud (maybe thats juz me).

I was also thinkin of putting on knobbies on my vara. and actually was thinkin of goin a little further in experimentation. was thinkin of puttin on taller front n reas suspensions (was told XR4 sus may juz fit) and maybe, MAYBE spoke rims...

i dunno if it might wrk, seriously...im a real newbie in bikes..

so for the knobbies, my questions wld be:

1) would it sacrifice road handling, especially on wet roads?

2) does it require tubes, even on sports rims? (ok i really know nuts bout sports n spoke rims)

well thats all i could think rite now...and i really hope more vara125 riders willin to experiment on d bike too... :cheeky:

i did plenty of research with regards to forks and suspensions.

For forks, my findings were that the stock one is the best for the vara125. They're engineered to cater to the shape, design, centre of gravity etc etc etc of our bikes. Forks longer in length could also POSSIBLY affect the flow of petrol into caburetor, not to mention that the sidestand and mainstand will have to be raised as well. Very detailed engineering at work here. Also, i researched the possibility of using inverted forks, like those of KTM and Yamaha, since those are designed to REALLY take a pounding. BUT, the setback was that IF the fork seals were to ever be broken or deteriorate, theres nothing to stop the fork oil from flowing out, since its inverted. Our Conventional (upright) forks would not be in this predicament, since the oil would just leak along the tube/shaft of the fork.. Very minimal compared to an inverted fork.

For rear suspension, the easiest solution is the Blackbird suspension. Its taller, harder and more rugged than the stock Vara suspension. A number of vara125s are using it, myself included. Do approach Ah Beng at Bikeworkz to order. I have yet to come across any other workshop willing to do it.

As for your questions,

1) Yes, handling on the ROAD will be compromised. A little Extra care must be taken when negotiating bends, corners in wet weather; just like all scramblers with knobbies.

This is because the profile of Offroad tyres (knobbies) are such that they have less surface area in contact with the road. This works the opposite way when OFFROAD, however. The knobbier they are, the more traction they give. Say goodbye to spinning tyres, fishtailing, cowtailing and whatever tails u may experience. Negotiate terrain riddled with patches of mud, sand, loose soil with ease.

2) Yes, knobbies definitely require tubes. There is no problem at all with having a tube type tyre fitted on vara125 rims which are originally designed for tubeless tyres

I would like to quote you an example. 2 years ago, i tried out Metzeler Tourance (tubeless). After about four months of use, the rear tyre was punctured VERY badly by god-knows-what. the Hole found in the tyre was almost the size of a 5-cent coin. The shop that i got the Tourance from IMMEDIATELY recommended getting a new set of tyres, front and rear saying that its impossible to patch up, must change both tyres cos both front and back must be new, blah blah blah. Sooo... i went to my FAVOURITE workshop for a second opinion, and what he did was just fit a tube into the damaged tyre, and BOOM! i had a perfectly functioning rear tyre again. :thumb: I rode for another 6 months till i totally wore the Tourance out, with the tube still going strong; and switched to Michelin SIRAC.

Can I ask a stupid question ??????

If change to tube tyre must change rim also ??? and personally I feel is that not all people knows how to change tube tyre when it is flat....just my 2 cents worth.

Not a stupid question at all. If your rims are for tubeless, there's no problem fitting tube type tyres on tubeless rims. As for knowing how to change a tube, i will admit that its a very tedious process. I personally witnessed a friend changing the rear tube of his Africa Twin. Tough job, but achievable. Tools needed are the basic spanners, a tyre iron, a few other things which i've forgotten, and a foot pump.

I believe if we were to approach the friendly guys in my favourite workshop, they'll be happy to give a tutorial. But obviously must give kopi money. :p

Also, in the event of a tubetyre being punctured, just do what i do. RIDE SLOWLY, hug the road shoulder, till u get to the nearest bike shop for a new tube (in singapore). If you're up north, you'd better be carrying spare tubes, right?

there will be no problemo using tube tires on sports or spokey rims.

cos either way its the tube that is holding the air in.

infact, using tubes has its advantages as well. you have teh flexibility of adjusting the tyre pressure to suit the terrain. done properly, you will have less flats compared to tube tyres actually. :thumb:

tubeless tyres however must be used with proper rims. using tubeless tyres alone on standard spokey rims will not work. the air will leak out as there is no suction lock.

Datok, I also wanna learn how to change tube. long time never practice liao.

can we expriment on your fatdero? ?

Well said, bro. Totally agree with the advantages part. Also, Tubes these days are VERY VERY durable. Normal tube would cost about the same as a pack of ciggies, the more durable and rugged ones, maybe 3 packs of ciggies?

So, this has been my 500 rupiah's worth. :thumb:

Saddiq, don't get me wrong if I'm putting undue pressure on you.

Seriously, if I were to own a vara125, i wouldn't put on knobbies since I will be riding more than 90% on tarmac. Moreover knobbies will really have a negative effect on the ride quality, handling and top speed.

Personally I don't think it is appropriate to use a small capacity bike on a V-twin configuration for offroading especially on an over-weight bike like the vara125. You will have more fun on a XR125.

Surely the vara125 can go offroad as Nash and you have proven that point but always use the right tool for the right job.

no pressure at all..

haha...i'm not "seriously" thinking of putting on the knobbies for now...but if i could stow my scorps with my mech n put on knobbies juz 4 light trails in plentong maybe.... maybe if my mech agrees then i would consider...

plus i'm thinkin of gettin the right "tool" as u mention after i get my 2a...sometime next year :faint:

yeah i wont wanna ride around in knobbies tho i must say it looks uber cool on vara... :cheeky:

I thought I'd quote something from my original post.

"The only things i hope to gain from this are more fulfilling adventures on my Vara125, as I am selling her off in the very near future.

I sincerely believe that its time the Varadero 125 REALLY lives up to its billing as the Adventure Bike of the Class 2B category."

I'm not here to try psycho anyone into putting knobbies on. Only the tyre salesmen would be doing that. All i'm saying is that taking a vara125 offroad is a challenge. An adventure. I can go offroad anytime i want to on either my WR2 or my XR4 and kill whatever tree or bush that happens to be growing in my path... But the feeling of completing a trail on either of those two bikes, is nowhere near as fulfilling as emerging from a trail on a Vara125. Yes, its heavy, yes it can be difficult to handle at times...

But isn't that what adventures are all about? Facing a challenge, conquering the obstacles, and finally standing triumphantly looking back at what was supposedly impossible. Or maybe going for top-ups via Second Link, or 'long' rides Up-North are enough of an adventure for the Vara125s? :faint:

In anyways, everyone's opinion is respected, and since it seems that response is extremely hestitant, I shall pursue this topic no more. Perhaps i'm just a little TOO adventurous for my own good. Or maybe I'm just plain mad.

So, I do hope that noone's offended my my remarks, cos this is not a personal attack of any sort.

And even if you ARE offended, I don't care.

I shall plead permanent insanity. :thumb:

Anyways, Cheers, Varadero 125 riders! (this IS a Varadero 125 thread, isn't it?)

Honk if you 'encounter' me making a nuisance in your neighbourhood. I'm the one with the number plate 678. :shades:
