Hi Im looking for a four stoke naked bike! Primarily because of maintenance and insurance cost issues. Not too concerned about the speed though. What is the cheapest range you can get with that criteria for a secondhand bike with roughly 5 years of COE left? I'm currently looking at the Bajaj Pulsar though!

same here! any experts can advice?

fuel economy is one thing, looks is another. I think pulsar's got a good share of both.

But looking at the new fz16 and fazer 150.. they're tempting..

fz16 and fazer150 would probably cost more than a pulsar. but i can vouch on a pulsar it can go at least 600km on a full tank. i noe because i ever rode 1 :D

TS, could u advise what's ur budget?

cheapest doesn't mean the best for ur wallet, esp 2nd hand bikes. u'll have to give more for repairs n maintainence.

Accident can happen anytime, anywhere.

However ask yourself, do you want to fall at 120km/h or 60km/h?

Posted

The answer should be pulsar...since u cant get FZ16 or FZ150 2nd hand with 5yrs COE left....agreed with fredd that u can more than 600km on a full tank...used to clock 640km on almost 17L...and maintenance is quite simple and easy...similar to other 2b bikes...kind of regret selling off my old pulsar with 5yrs COE left at only 1.5K

I wanted to change the world. But I have found that the only thing one can be sure of changing is oneself.

I always get 750+ kms on 17 ltrs on my Bajaj Pulsar 180 and I have almost always topped up in JB. I just calculated cost savings on fuel for the last 10,000 kms I have ridden v/s a phantom, since phantom is the other bike that I like.As phantom is 10 ltrs, I would never go to JB to top up.

Pulsar 10000 kms @ 45 km/ltr requires 222 ltrs @ 1.9RM = 0.76$/ltr

Total Cost = $168

Phantom 10000 kms @ 35 km/ltr requires 285 ltrs @ 1.7$/ltr

Total Cost = $485

Total Savings = $316

So every year(10,000 kms) you save about $316 :)

Regarding maintainance. In the last 10,000 kms, I have never taken the bike to the authorised dealer for servicing. I just do the EO change myself at a nearby shop every 3500 kms and have changed the spark plugs myself just once. I regularly oil the chain myself.

I did get the sprockets and chain changed at Lim Ah Boy once, for 35$. It wasnt necessary but I did it to reduce the gear ratio so that cruising on the highway at 100 km/hr is smooth. Do I love my pulsar? :slurp:

Bajaj or YBR 125 is better ?

YBR 125 and Bajaj 180/200 cannot be compared. YBR is 125CC and should be compared with Spark, Wave, X1 or may be CBF150.

Bajaj can be compared with only FZ16, FZ150i, R15, Phantom 200, CBR 150, Daelim RW 150 and Tiger 200

i hate my pulsar for such good fc, 4yr of pumping in jb only 2k+ points :( can't even claim my fav fridge.

@ 1.9RM = 0.76$/ltr

how u get xchag rate of 2.5? can i chg with u? :p

btw, why phamtom cannot go jb pump, smaller tank just go a few more times, waste time, waste petrol, but add up still lesser than pump in SG. :p

YBR 125 and Bajaj 180/200 cannot be compared. YBR is 125CC and should be compared with Spark, Wave, X1 or may be CBF150.

wave is good, all the cheap parts everywhere, virtually maintainence free

Haha, I always fill at Esso in Ah Gua lane and the lady always asks me if I have membership card. I just smile and nod my head. Can a Singapore resident get a membership card with JB Esso?

Regarding exchange rate, I just multiplied by 0.4 actually should be 0.42 :)

not accouding to ur calculation above, my calculator show a rate of 0.5. :D

my advise dont get the card, use mine instead. :D

Bajaj can be compared with only FZ16, FZ150i, R15, Phantom 200, CBR 150, Daelim RW 150 and Tiger 200

I'd group them this way actually...

Spark, wave, x1, fino - Cubs, capable of 50km/l (except for maybe fino)

Gilera, Vespa - Italian scooters, around 25-30km/l

YBR125, CBF150, RXZ 135 - Older model Naked bikes, classic, reliable, ah pek's favourites. But RXZ is 2-stroke, faster bike, a mat rempit favourite. Should be capable of 40km/l

FZ16, FZ150i, Bajaj Pulsar, Tiger 200, Daelim RW 150 - Recent naked bikes, bit more modern technology, similar price range & performance, better than 40km/l

R15, CBR150 - recent small capacity sports bikes, not sure of fuel consumption

NSP/KR - older, sports 2-stroke bikes. No longer in production. sometimes 20km/l

Phantom - Cruiser 35km/l

pulsar is a good and cheap naked bike with good fc and maintenance.

one thing the pulsar lose is the looks (as compared to FZ16 FZ150i Daelim Comet etc)

but once modded, they can be quite nice. i've seen nice pulsars OTR in SG.

u guys may wanna go search for Honda's new CBR150fi, its really nice and said to have excellent FC.

it also has an excellent hp. Made in Thailand so the parts are not expensive.

new cbr is not going to be in SG. some guy called hong leong and checked already.

February 2011 - March 2012 = Phantom TA 200

March 2012 - August 2013 = Suzuki Impulse 400

Present = BMW (Bus, MRT, Walk)

here's wat newbies dun know about but most concern of getting lowest fc (fuel consumption).

so wat's is good fc??? many will ask.

it's a fact n proven in scientific world tat gasoline burns optimum at stoichiometric 14.7:1 air/fuel mix in mass (wt., not in vol).

for any cl2b bikes, tat should be range around 30km/l, any fc above 30km/l is consider lean.

here another fact, lean carb or efi setup, bike engine will run hot. the leaner, engine will run hotter.

combustion temperature can reach above 800 deg C at most extreme lean setting.

normal operating combustion temperature should be around 600~700 deg C.

it also self-cleaning as it will burn off all residuals in the combustion chamber.

at 700 n above deg C is lean state.

wat's bad about running lean beside one good point of saving fuel??

here's r the disadvantages;

1) engine is under performance.

2) engine will overheating (stop functioning if it is extremely hot like most stock pulsar).

3) extreme heat can boil/evaporate/cook engine oil thus eo breakdown at faster rate. lost it's properties to lubricate, cleanse, parts wear n tear faster, built up sludge (black death for engine in technical term).

4) extreme heat also cause rubber seal/gasket to change their physical form, turn brittle n hard, sooner will break up n oil will leak.

5) spark plug electrode will be burn off.

6) at worst, overheating can burn a hole thru the piston.

etc..

if u still think tat saving fuel is good, think again.

in long run, it's the worst thing tat u do to ur bike, do most harm than good.

besides running at extreme lean produce more pollutant carbon monoxide.

do yourself a favour, dun be stingy on saving fuel. run ur bike at optimum stoichiometric setting.

u will enjoy riding more with your bike at performance level n also save the earth from pollutants.

The "Some guy" called the wrong company. He should have called up Boon Siew and not Hong Leong. Haha.

But wat if the bike is already manufactured wif the fuel saving technology/settings/configurations? Cos all those bikes when bought stock r already like that, i dont think someone would adjust it.
