i normally practice every 10000 km to change engine oil filter n plugs

from Hayes Blackbird Servicing Manual, our E.O change is every 8000miles or 12000km together with the oil filter. Not the 5000km or etc ...

what about you guys ?

Did the bike shop again want to make more money so tell us to change every 5000km ?

Some things you can check if your bike really drinking lots of petrol.

- look at muffler, is it very black? Or does it look cleanish? Get someone to rev the engine a little, do you see black smoke? (This is the most troublesome to fix if you have)

- Ride round a block or something, then brake and stop. Then try to push your bike forward in neutral, are the brakes grabbing?

- Look at your front and rear tyres, are the wear patterns normal? This is to rough check your tyre alignment is correct, if your tyres out of alignment your bike is wasting petrol and burning rubber unecessarily as your tyres are not in a straight line.

- are the tyres pumped to the correct pressure? 42PSI front and rear

- check the air cleaner, when was it cleaned or replaced?

- check your front and rear sprocket sizes, is it stock? It seems that some birdies are having non-stock sprocket sizes, including mine when I bought it.

I was scratching my head for a long time wondering about my higher than usual fuel consumption (my exhaust is very very clean leh), then my mechanic helped me count the tooth and realized the front sprocket is not stock, and that's equivalent to 3 teeth more on the back, which is a lot! But sprockets and chains are expensive, and I calculated that the extra fuel (50 cent to $1 each tank) is not worth me changing to new set of sprocket and chains, so I just use first loh.

Just try to logically troubleshoot the problem, can find one la.

And buying a 2nd hand bike need not be a crap shoot. I have a checklist that I used when buying a bike, and I'm very thankful to say so far my bike has been very reliable and never given me problems (apart from the initial problem where the wire was loose on the ignition switch). If anyone wants the checklist, just PM me.

If you try to install the PC3 to fix your fuel consumption problem you're not really fixing the problem right? It's just sticking an expensive "koyok". And I seriously doubt you can fix the consumption problem this way, because the stock ECM may run a tiny bit richer at certain RPMs, but I don't think it'll cause the consumption problems you described.

Your problem may have entirely nothing to do with fueling. It could be a stuck brake pad, or misaligned tyres, or a dirty air cleaner, or wrong sprocket sizes. Then you go and install the PC3, will that solve the problem? I hope you get what I mean.

I give you a (lousy) analogy. You're a runner, and you accidentally step on a thorn that makes your foot hurt and swollen, and as a result you cannot run as fast. You ask a fellow runner what to do, and he suggests you drink Gatorade and eat more carbo, that makes him run faster. So you try, and you get some improvement. But that doesn't solve the problem, the solution is to remove the thorn from your foot. I know it's a lousy analogy but I hope it helps you understand what I mean by using logic to troubleshoot a problem instead of just throwing money at it till it goes away.

The PC3 is a computer that takes the signals from your bike sensors (or the outputs from the ECM I'm not too sure) and then modifies it based on the "mapping" you program into it, to make the components of the bike (spark firing, fuel injector opening times) operate differently. Unlike the stock ECM, the PC3's mappings are customizable. But "customizable" also brings a whole slew of problems of its own if you don't get it properly dialed in.

I really suggest you bring your bike to a good mechanic and try to logically eliminate the causes of the problems until you find the cause. I don't think my mechanic will be interested to do this, so I shall not recommend, but I think Boon Siew Honda will. Maybe other bros here can share their mechanic.
