hi, i was wondering how long before we need to replace the wheel bearing in our bikes?

i just change the bearing at 31000km (20th month 2B bike )for the rear wheel.

the fella said the bearing is due to change as the the turning of the bearing is not as smooth as new.

some more gave me a new bearing to compare .

yes not as smooth but i thought only need to replace when it is damaged??

so which is which?

price of replace for the rear wheel bearing is $30.

can any bros pls advise??

thanks

change when damaged..

There are plenty of symptoms for worn out bearings, so they should be replaced before they are damaged. Bearings should be regarded as one of the consumables and should be replaced at regular interval.

normally during tyre change...

I know some Goldwing owners do that

Looking at what you say, it's good to replace based on your mechanic recommendation, especially he let you compare your existing bearing to a new set of bearing. Don't think he is out to con you if he let you do the comparision. It will probably cost you more if you wait till your bearings are badly worn and resulted in other parts damange.

There should be a seal to minimise foreign particles and water from contact with the bearings. Bearings should be lubricated periodically.

Most Jap bikes do not stipulate when to change the bearings. They usually advice to "rotate the inner ring (of the bearing) by hand to inspect if any abnormal noise occurs or rotating smoothing" ie, check for play.

When to change the bearings depends on the type of bike and usage. As for me, same time as my sprockets.

I would replace all my wheel bearings every 50,000km as a preventive maintenace :)

during tyres change, the mechanic show me the bearing is not turning smoothly. took out the 2 bearing and one of it have sound when shaked. as for the rear, he told me it is still good to use.

find a mechanic you trust and go for thier advice.

I changed mine when my mechanic shook my wheel horizontally and showed me that the wheel was 'loose'. He did the same for the rear wheel but there was no movement, so end up changed front wheel bearing

Another good indicator would be when you are squeezing through traffic and you feel that your steering is not as sharp and accurate as it should be..

ask the mechanic to test the bearing for you. change only when needed.

as for how much, it depend on your bike. give them a call before going down.
