Hi all, Can anyone recommend the best chain lube? Im currently using the Muc Off p.t.f.e high performance dry chain lube which i think is very good but most of the time out of stock. So looking for other alternatives which is as good.

how do you define..best??

cost/km?operations cost

chain life expected with the lube used?

ease of applications? cleaniless?

unless the above is sorted out...its hard to identiy a best chain lube..

if you value money more than time or time over money..the results can be very different..

bel ray super clean chain lube. ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT FLING OFF.

only problem is that it is white in color. so some people might not like it.

I accidentally bought the wrong one, spray on, leave to dry, ride. still fling to my rear rim, only the Super clean will not fling. the normal bel ray molyphos will still fling.

February 2011 - March 2012 = Phantom TA 200

March 2012 - August 2013 = Suzuki Impulse 400

Present = BMW (Bus, MRT, Walk)

maxima for me... chain wax minimal fling, but abit hard to clean off, so basically make sure u clean d chain often, if not build-up will make it tough to get off... the chain guard is abit more liquid... thus a little fling, but not too bad.. but easier to clean, though u might nd to lube more often compared to the chain wax....

i recommend oilers...as this would take care of your chain lubbing ...and keep your chains in tip top conditions all the time.

and you will never need to clean chains at all...

Was a maxima chain wax user for 2 bikes.

Stays on the chain really really long.

To clean, you need to use diesel. But after cleaning, if you just use chain wax, those parts that's left uncovered will rust in a day or two.

I'm self applying a $4/L 4t every week now. Chain is quieter and easier to clean. Just wipe with old newspapers. However, you will have to lube it every week.

Was considering the belray as ive heard extremely good reviews about them but i dont like a semi white chain.

Thus, If i were to get one now, it'll be DUPONT chain saver. Check out the videos on the CMO.

There's a saying.

More fling, better protection.

From my own exprience , chain lube is generally grouped to 2 types. First is the wet and 2nd is the dry. The main diff between them is the sticky part.

Wet lube is generally more sticky than the dry lube and that has an advantage in the rain as the lube can hold on to the chain better. But that work against it when in dry and dusty condtion as all the dirt, grime will be attracted to the chain and becomes diffcult to remove after some time.

Dry lube on the other hand is not that sticky and works well in keeping the chain clean and lube in dry and dusty condtions but dont fare well in wet conditions. When used in the rainy conditions, the lube tends to get wash off much faster than those lube that are more sticky.

Google search on finish line website about its bicycle chain and learn more. Though its lube is for bicycle use, but I find it informative as its also generally the case for our motorcycle chain lubes.

Your technical explanation is refreshing :)

There are also 'thicker' and 'thinner' chain lubes and they all have their own reasons for being that way. Some say thinner ones will infiltrate better into the O/X/Z ring seals, others prefer thicker ones like Maxima for their own reasons. All of them work to prolong chain life and reduce transmission losses. I've never preferred one brand over the other, just know that a greasy chain is a good chain. DID 520VX X-ring chain now past 40,000kms / 16 months and still doesn't need any adjustment. This chain has never been adjusted ever since installing. Pretty good considering I go wide open throttle most of the way.

I attribute that not to the quality or frequency of lubrication, but by sound mechanical design behind the X-ring concept.

I've never bothered with cleaning the chain too. Grease = good. Potentially corrosive degreasing solvents may damage the rubber seals leading to decreased life.

Very true. The construction of the chain plays the most important part for the chain life and proper chain maintance will prevent it from premature failure.

yeah...all commercial chain lubes do a great job....

but i noticed the cleaning chains ..is not practiced by most..

yes just apply the lube only...

some like the greasy look..but this is the stuff that will pick up road gimes that will eventually desroy your chains....earlier...

in order to have max chain life ..cleaning chains is part of the routine...

those who have an oiler on their bikes...do not need a date with chain cleaning or lubbing....

its great that you guys take good care of your chains...whatever the methods...

dont loose hp ..put it back into your bike with a tip top chains..
