hi guys, is it possible to buy a bike, registered with LTA and with insurance, however, with the address that is not as stated in my NRIC?

Getting a bike but not telling the mom? Hahaha!!

Legally it's not possible. Since all government systems are linked and as long as ur official address with SIR is 'xxx', LTA will base on that address.

You are so smart. Yes, Im getting a bike without telling mom.

I have got a friend who allows me to use his address, or even register under his name.

I have 2 persons sharing the bike, but is not the friend mentioned above.

Is there anywhere going about this?

I know cos I done that before. Hahaha!! My mom didn't know me owning, riding or even had a licence from 2B till class 2 and over this period I own 5 bikes in all. Hahahaha!! Of cos lucky for me my mom doesn't open my mails so I was pretty safe. But all these were many years ago and now I have 'licence' to have any 'licences'. Then again, the mom still nags occasionally on me riding despite I do own a car as well. Hahaha!!

If this friend of urs is trustworthy then it should be ok. U can register under his name but insurance indicate that he is not riding but u r. I duno if can put ur other friend's name in the insurance or not. You better check this out before u buy the bike.

However, there are disadvantages to this as u won't be entitled to No-Claim Bonus (NCD) next time when u finally buy ur own bike as the policy was in your friend's name. And also in an event of accident (*TOUCHWOOD!!) and there's any insurance claim, your friend who is technically the owner might have his premium go up including other motor insurance he might have.

Perhaps u can check with LTA if possible for all correspondences with regards to the bike to send to a separate mailing address although the official residential address will still be what is stated in ur NRIC.

Let A be the the friend who is lending me his name, and B be the friend who Im sharing the bike with

So A have to pay for the insurance for my bike? He is riding a Class2A bike now.

So if I indicate that A is not riding the bike, can I indicate that Im the rider, and B is the co-rider?

If the envelop does not have any company logo, then Im quite fine actually.

As my parents only pass me my mails, but do not open them.

Actually, Im thinking of that. Registered address different from the residential address.

Its like a scenario whereby I stay at an address that is different from the address in my IC.

I am not sure if this option is available to all companies (LTA, insurance, etc) for purchasing a bike.

Im sure there are a handful of bikers outta who have been through my stage. Share your experiences please :)

Same, let A be the friend who lend me his name and address, and B be the friend who is sharing with me.

1) Does A need to pay for the insurance of my bike?

2) B is doing this behind his parents.

i think you can just register the bike under your friend's name (A)

then under insurance put your friend's name (B) and just put your name as the sub-rider.

so there won't be any letters sent to your home. but be careful, there could be lots of trouble if you do this.

1) no need. A is the owner of the bike. if you are not going to put his name under the insurance, he don't need to pay

B is riding without his parents knowing too. He is just like my plight.

So can I register the bike under A name, Im as the rider, and B as sub-rider?

Does the insurance company send any letter to your home?

for the part in bold i am not really very sure... wait for someone else to comment on that.

but if you register yourself as the main rider.. i think they will send you letters. like when its time for renewal etc.

I doubt the insurance will send any letters to the sub-riders cos I didn't get any when I was for a friend's Vespa which I loaned from him couple months.

The 'problem' is its between you, A and then there's a B. Sibeh troublesome. While I'm sure u can get A to be the registered owner while the insurance indicate he's not riding and u r the named rider, I do not know if there's any insurance company that allows 2 named riders. You have to check with the respective insurance agencies.

Whether or not it's right or wrong to buy a bike without ur parents knowing... I'll leave this to urself. And as someone who had done it before, I can totally empathise what u going through. No matter what, my advice is be sure u can trust A & B. I never like the idea of buying something but put in another person's name. If u still wana do this, it's safer for both parties (or for your case 3 parties) to write an agreement on the liabilities and co-sharing of the bike including traffic summons, accident (*TOUCHWOOD!!) and maintainence of the bike.

Actually B is my girlfriend. and A is a good friend of us who is riding a Class 2A bike

Advise me if this work.

When I buy a bike, I will register bike under A name and address.

Regarding the insurance, A will be a non-rider, I am the main rider with my own address, and my girlfriend as sub-rider, with her own address.

As long as the envelop does not have any company stamp, it is okay to be sent to our place.

However, I heard that LTA envelop will have its logo, therefore, it cannot be send to my place.

Any advice on this?

LTA will not send any letters to u as long as u r not the owner.

Insurance I doubt they will send to u as long as policy owner is A.

Whether the insurance policy can have A as policy owner (non-riding) with u and B as named riders u have to check with the insurance company.

For insurance dilemma like this... I would say I miss those days of 'Any-Rider' policy which we also use to refer to as 'easy girls'. Hahahaha

COE/Road Tax, how often do you get these letters?

Does it contain LTA logo on the envelop?

Because if it is not very often, I will register under my name already, and make things much easier like that.

Posted

Road tax every renewal. If u renew 1 year then u'll get the renewal notice yearly. In addition to this. 3 months prior u'll get a LTA letter to send ur bike for inspection.

LTA will also send u a letter upon successful transfer of ownership to u.

All LTA correspondences comes with their logo.

This is so complex man. I think you are looking at a co-op of people pulling this job for you.

(which might result in dire consequences should any non-auspicous things happen. Finger crossed yay)?

Now now..

YOU can be the the person that buys the bike legally. BUT you will need guarantor(s) (Which I am sure you are not paying full cash).

Bike shops will definitely post your letters bearing their name on the basis of (this is for new bike)

1) your contract with the bike shop on loan

2) your roadtax

3) your 'temporary' lot card till LTA send one to the registered owner (which will not be you I suppose)

4) random stuff maybe? Like your installment card... oil change at their workshop.. stuff..

Insurance can only have 1 named MAIN rider and 1 sub-rider. Across the board.

The premium will be based on the rider's experience and on the highest possible premium chargeable. You can however change your sub-rider from time to time with an admin charge of 50 (for MSIG) or 80(with NTUC) **for what I know** and that will allow you to ride BUT should you encounter anything (insurance claim or ppl claim you or what ever stuff) BOTH will receive letters.

In your case, A will be the registered rider of the bike but A cannot NOT be named as a rider because regulation for loan is that you must take on 2nd party for the least. And that how can you register a bike + COE under say "Tan Meng Meng" when your insurance policy is "Pi Kah Chew"? (under contractual law, this is deem forfeited)

Per se the bike shop allows you to register the bike with A and put you as named rider, then during license check or any event, who the authority to look for?

1) someone who bought the bike but is not the insured rider? (as good as saying his bike is stolen or he is riding without insurance. Law broken)

2) someone bought the bike and was insured? (as good as you being a sub-rider.)

Makes out that there is no lee way for all 3 of you to fit in. Either..

1) A be named and you would be sub

2) Just tell your family la~ (respect?)

3) just get it and let hell break loose when letters comes :)

But in the above mentioned case, you are in favour. Cause bike + COE + insurance is A's liability. You need to hold on to your end should you consider A as your good friend and you need to be responsible :)
