Anyone here tried to modify the air filter? Removed the air filter assembly and found that I could stick on a cone filter from my previous car. Looks pretty cool, and free-flowing too. Induction sound was great. BUT, a very big 'but' was in the power - there was none. couldn't even go up a slope. I think the air-fuel mixture was too lean. Is there any way to make it richer?

An ex-dragstar owner have used a K&N filter for the 650 on the 400 and another have modified a stock filter with K&N material.

For tunning of mixture ratio, you could bring it to the motorshop for the job.

Four wheels move the body. Two wheels move the soul.

bro.. if u wanna go for performance mods... keep in mind that the airfilter, carbs and pipes are joined together..... change any one of these 3, u gotta change the whole thing... free flowing pipes need bigger jets and better airflow... same goes for airfilters.. changing better flowing filters require bigger main jets to balance back the power... subsequently u need through pipes for all these mods.. if u are not mentally prepared to go through all of this, then i suggest u dun do it...

if u are however, pm me.. i have things which u might be interested in.

Dear experienced Dragstar riders,

Since I see that this is where all Dragstars riders exchange views and experiences, can I ask a few questions on purchasing of a 2nd-hand Dragstar? I didn't want to start another new thread since I saw there is already one where all Dragstar riders gather. If you feel that I have posted my questions wrongly here, pls kindly enlighten and not flame me. Thanks in advance.

Ok, here goes. I thought of upgrading to a Dragstar from my current Phantom. My friend and I went to Alexander Village at Bukit Merah Lane this afternoon and saw a totally black FT330X X Dragstar on sale at one of the motor-shops there. I shall not mention name of shop in case I get sued for saying something wrong about the shop. Anyway, this shop is famous for "chop carrot head", high annual interest and very near to the former ASPoon motor shop(ASPoon have since moved out of Bukit Merah Lane).

The sales guy told me it is a 5 yrs old Dragstar, but from the look of the bike, it looked older. Seat leather a bit torn off, the two nuts near the speedometer are very rusty, etc.. He said it has only 1 owner, a 59 yrs old rider. I looked at the km meter, this bike has travelled 617++ km. He told me he selling for S$3.8K, but if I am interested, he can sell me at S$3.5K(B4 GST and interest for the loan @S$250/year). I asked him for rear box and he said he can help me look for rear box and two side saddles, guess they will be second-hand. He even said if my friend decided to get a brand new Hayabusa from him, he can offer me S$3.3 for the Dragsatr.

He told me to pay S$800 now and can ride off, S$482 for my insurance (I am 30 yrs old this year) and transfer fee, which I think is about S$180 if I remembered correctly. My friend who was with me at the shop said the rest of the money is for "kopi money" which the bike shop earn for doing the paper-work, which I think is a lot and a cup of kopi don't cost that much lor...

So I would like to ask whether S$3.5K is a good deal for a 5 years old Dragstar? I heard people say, for both bikes and cars, once the machine reached 5 yrs old, big problems start to surface. Plus the 3 yrs old FV Phantom I am riding now is from this shop and it gave me a lot of problems. I got to spend S$1K to overhaul everything in the Phantom engine after six months of buying from this shop. So I am quite scared that I may get another problem bike from this shop. Once bitten, twice shy. I know all of you will tell me to go to other bike shops. I am still stuck with about 21 months of instalments for my Phantom. The sales guy said if I were sell back my Phantom to them, he can take back my bike and break even everything for me. I just need to take up a new loan for this FT Dragstar. My friend and I have discussed. If I were to go to trade-in my Phantom at other bike shops, knowing that I still have a loan to clear for my Phantom, other bike shops will definitely "eat back" the bike at a very low price and I still got to cough money to pay back the difference+the new loan for my next bike.

I also like to ask if I can ask him to start the Dragstar engine for me, what things should I look out for and/or listen to see if there is problem(s) with the bike? And what else can I check for to determine whether it is a okay bike or not? I really afraid if I commit myself to buying this Dragstar, after riding for a few months, I need to change the 2 pistons and/or the whole engine, or worse still need to change the whole shaft? If I am damn unlucky, what would be the costs like? Of overhaul the enigne? Of changing the shaft?

Sorry, I know I am asking a lot of questions and some may sound stupid. I really just want to get more advices before committing myself.

I really hope to hear a few advices from some experience Dragstar owners here. Thanks very much in advance.

Sorry, I forgot to mention it is a Dragstar Classic. Another question is where can I send Dragstar for servicing/repairs? Can I go to bike repairs shop like HKL at Bukit Merah Lane? Or I must send it to Yamaha service center for servicing/repairs? If really must go Yamaha service center, where is it located in Sinagapore??

hey seahmh, no question is stupid by the way.. the stupid ones are those who don't ask questions! :p

ok 3.5k for a FT plate dragstar is an OKAY price... or rather shall i say normal price.. depending on the condition, the price may vary. hmmm 1st thing u should worry abt is the shaft, twist the rod and see if there's alot of freeplay or clicking noises. those are signs of busted bearings for the coupling holding the front shaft or worse still, a spoilt coupling which would cost in excess of $200 to repair. (i got mine done)

something not to worry abt is the pistons coz usually 400cc cruisers do not have problems with the pistons and engine.. somemore 59 year old fella so it's even safer but then always good to give it a try. listen for rattling sounds at the end of each short burst of the throttle.. signs of worn piston rings in most cases. BUT it's hard to hear noises like that la from a dragstar since it's air cooled. (noiser than liquid cooled bikes)

check the bearings on the tires especially the back one because it's shaft driven so the rear is very heavy... go into a pothole and the bearings can go as well... abt $20 la the change i also forgot already.

another thing to look out for is the clutch housing. clutch in when the bike is idling. when u let go, u would hear a rattling sound.. that is normal among dragstars. it's NOT normal when the rattling sound is extra loud!

other than that, ask for a test ride and test the brakes..

for servicing, the agent is expensive but they might do a good job for u.. personally.. my experience if u wanna know would be better to be said in PM.. :p any shop would be able to service a dragstar since it's still considered a small bike with carbs and all. whereas for shaft servicing then u'll have to see which shop can do it. i service mine at planet motors at ubi.

last of all... im selling my dragstar classic :p price is negotiable though and it's an aug '99 model.. :)

It's your damn bike, wash it yourself! You rinse your own mouth after you eat, don't you?

You can call NTUC Directly or visit income.com.sg for an online quotation.

Transfer fee? Depend on the age of the bike.

Should not cost more than $80.

Insurance ? I guess it will not be costy of a 30 yo rider.

Hi all, I got my FU Dragstar for 5k last 2 weeks. Dragstar Classic. Black colour with crash bar, harley saddle bag and backrest. All chrome are shiny and no rusty in anyparts. previous owner are good in polish and maintain the bike. For my opinion, never go for a rusty dragstar or else u will regret. Get something look shiny and new and pay a little bit more, is more worthy. And the engine performance is best, simply twist, it can go... 2 person no problem. been riding up and down from upper east coast down to jb for 3 times just to stress test it.

but dear all, Can i know how to change the headlight bulb? how to open it? and how to install the BM horn ? any guideline. Thanks.

I'll try to explain. Worst case is some one meet up with you to show you, as long as you have a H4 headlight bulb ready.

This works best when the light is off for a while, 'cos the bulb could be hot.

1) Undo the 2 big screws on the side (not the ones in front 'cos they adjust the angle of the headlight)

2) Pull (or was it twist?) the headlight cover open

3) Undo the catch that is holding the bulb holder into the bulb cover.

4) Remove bulb

5) Replace the new bulb. Take care not to touch the glass of the new bulb. Dirt could shorten its life span.

6) Reverse the process.

Hope it is easy to understand.

Hi Seahmh,

look at this way,

no matter where, what, how, u still lose $$ when u trade in ur phantom at any bikeshop. Alternatively u can try to sell to another buyer urself. But A BIT TROUBLESOME LAH.

Anyway, if u looking for dragstar at other motorshop make sure visually there are no rust!! A rusty bike is confirm not good( my rule of thumb)

I prefer if that bike is being kept indoors.

FYI - I found other DSClassic at these motoshop:

Cyclelink (opp the old serangoon Fire Station)

Everbright (at Eunos Industrial Estate)

I myself am still searching for DSC too.

Add me in: Ex Dragstar Custom owner.

Soon-to-be Dragstar Classic owner.

Where would a "good" 2nd hand Shadow 750 or Dragstar 650 be found and what cld the price be like?

Not sure if I've seen them ard coz most of them are the 400s unless they are actually the bigger class bike...

Dragstar 650 doesn't seem to be available here. For a 2nd hand Shadow 750, Try Mah Motors or Looi's. Not sure if there's any 2nd hand Shadow 750s there.
