hi lao jiaos and all,

hope i can get your opinion on a matter....

currently drive to work on weekdays and would like to get 400cc/600cc for weekend riding and track usage (nothing competitive, just for fun).... looking at a cbr400, gsxr600 k4 or cbr600 2001....

need your opinion on a few things:

1) 400 or 600?

400cc definitely cheaper but my colleague shared with me these 400cc sportsbikes (cbr400, rvf400) are not built for track and due to age will need to spend a lot of time (& $$) in the workshop after track session....

600cc will be younger for sure but will cost more to buy and maintain (i think?)... the seller's bike i'm looking at has lots of race accessories already (damper, suspension, fast throttle, PC3, dynojet, full system) so that is a big draw for me.

2) stock or done up?

building from stock will cost more but can do it as a project bike and calibrate to my style....

done up means no need to spend too much on extra accessories but need to recalibrate the whole bike to my likings....

thanks for your thoughts and opinions1

hmm current owner did not bring it to track, mostly for weekend riding... previous owner before him brought it to track but not sure what extent he wack the engine.... total mileage is around 40,000km, good for a k4?

previous owners has skidded before on left side can tell from engine case and sliders worn out.... should i be concerned about leaks? felt some oil when i touched the engine case, will changing the case be enough?

Hmmmm... Very touchy question... If e case is fine, prolly its e gasket that worn off... But confirm its from there or elsewhere ?... Top gasket leaks wud also cause oil to sip n flow towards that area... Y e selller is willing, y not have a good mech have e bike thoroughly check then u will know e actual condition of e bike :)

Go for a 600cc bike, especially you plan to go on track. It'll give you better satisfaction after the track. :)

definitely 600cc. not much difference in maintenance, might even be cheaper due to the age of the 400cc.

Rat bike - A motorcycle not necessarily kept in pristine condition, often painted matt black. Minimal maintenance and mismatched parts often used.

Can consider those newer than K4 series of 600cc bikes, those registered after 2006 perhaps.....at least can enjoy for some time before the COE expire.

Yamaha RXZ, Kawasaki ZX KR150, Yamaha Spark135, Honda CB400 REVO NC42, Suzuki DRZ400SMK8, Aprilia RS125, Suzuki GSXR600K9, Honda RS150R

Alot lighter due to better mass centralization if u take bikes like 07 above cbr6! 1vote for 600.

Go for 600. Better still, go for r6

was looking at some but the r6 tag carries a premium in the price....

would you suggest taking a stock bike and doing it up yourself for track or get one which is track ready? cost is a concern to me, but at the same time i enjoy the process of building up the bike and tuning it to my likings....

i would buy a bike that have most accessories that i want. its cheaper that way. rather than buying it stock then buy part by part, its ex. but if you have money to spend that way, then its a different story.

i bought a bike almost stock before, then started modifying it to my liking, suspensions, exhaust etc. fun? yeah. broke? hell yeah. lesson learnt, by then i told myself i will buy a bike with most of this stuff already in. in which i did and i am still riding it and enjoying it.

this is something many pple dont realise. when you buy a bike with many accessories, the seller most probably would sell the accessories on the bike cheaper than if its dismantled and sold separately, at least that's for my case. it saves me the trouble and time.

my 2 cents worth.

Rocklobster: Agree with dragonforce. Try to buy a bike with the parts that you need. More cost effective. Suspension i rather source on my own though.

Depending on the track and rider skill, a 400 would be good for a beginner methink, can be full on the throttle without worrying, you'll get beaten in straights though but common sense says get the 600 cuz its newer, all the 400s sports are old, even older are the 250 2 strokes, wicked track machines so I've heard.
