There has been recent news on cyclist being knocked down by vehicles, then the complain to Road Safety Council.

Its definitely a tragedy that cyclists are knocked down and some resulting in lives lost due to careless and irresponsible drivers. But isn't it the same for us bikers ?

Have they not noticed this until now that all bikers also face the same danger ? We also face constant dangers, despite some of them caused by our own careless riding and complacency on the road. But the end result is the same.

This is the response from the Singapore Road Safety Council Chairman

"Singapore Road Safety Council Chairman Bernard Tay today told cyclists to accept that they are vulnerable on the roads and urged them to be fanatical about their own safety.

In a statement to the media, Mr Tay pointed out that cyclists will always come out worse in any accident with a motorised vehicle.

"Adopt a safety-first mindset and consistently make safe decisions on the side of caution," he said.

"Be aware that there are many motorists who are inconsiderate, inattentive and fail to exercise due care on the roads."

Basically means you just have to fend for yourself and nothing else can be done. Is this really a fact ? Or they just don't bother ? Cars are flipping, bikes are falling, lives are lost, but no education of motorists are being done on the road or rules implemented to protect motorists.

For our law, the worst penalty for causing death through reckless is a few months jail, not more than 1 year and a fine. Is this too lenient or do they really don't bother till someone important dies and it brings up the news worthy acknowledgement that something needs to be changed.

Through the strengthening of our national reserves and economy, human compassion definitely seems like a stone thrown out of the window. As long as it doesn't hit you, it doesn't bother them.

Ride safe bikers. You only have 1 life, and for most people, 1 chance.

Exactly !! Why don't we have a biker's lane. Of course this would mean a minimum speed, but then it might be safer.

A poll had been done and 6 out of 10 agree to have a bicycle lane. Are there so many bicycles on the road that that is needed ? Singapore is small but not THAT small. Geeez....

I guess bikers should start writing to PM too...make it a big hooha, they have the statistics along with them, why no action ?

Motorcyclist fight for don't know how many donkey years for motorcycle lane also don't have. What makes the cyclists think they will get one? And looking at it statistically, the number of injuries or death occurred by motorcyclist is way higher than cyclist man.. I don't don't hate cyclist considering that I'm one. But when we decided to cycle on the road, it's a risk that we take. Same as us motorcyclist who took the risk and ride on the road.

If they decide to make cyclist lane good for them. However make it mandatory that they have to go for RTT and proper cycling lessons before allowed to own a bicycle. Make it similar as to how it is to get a motorcycle.

Ya I so agree, nothing wrong with cyclists on the road. But its the knowledge of cycling on the road that is important. Do they follow the road rules on the road, or just ride in whatever way they want.

I have seen cyclists cycle on the road and just cross the red light, but also sometimes cycle on the pedestrian walk as well. I believe the public do not understand what are the rights of the cyclists. Its more like avoiding them just to prevent colliding into them.

If they do cycle on the road, then they have to acknowledge that they are like bikers who face the same danger and do not assume that motorists will give way to them.

Most cyclists want to be given the same rights as motor vehicles on the road. But they treat traffic junctions as if they were fuccking pedestrians.

How like that?

You sure bikers will use Bike Lanes?

All the Bike Lanes in Malaysia are just a waste of money as malaysian bikers hardly use them and I have never seen Singapore bikers use them.

Some of these cyclists are courting their own death by cycling leisurely 3 abreast and chatting, and I will blast my horns whenever I pass them, and they will show me their middle finger as if I was in the wrong. You can witness these dangerous acts every Saturday and Sunday along Thomson road, and Changi Coastal Road, Loyang Rd, and Mandai Road.

When one of them died on the road, they create a big hooha and demand the world to change. They should reflect on themselves and change their attitude and riding behaviour so they can stay alive to enjoy their hobby.

Cycling in Singapore is not without risks but they can be significantly reduced if the cyclists exercise some common sense and don't defy the law of physics.

Hmm i think we all know ourselves that riding is dangerous. It is a risk we riders took by choice. Otherwise, drive a car or take public transport. I just feel that just calm down and give and take on the road lar. We all share the same road. If we think that might is right; then no rider or driver should complain when a huge lorry cuts them or when a bus drives to within an inch of your handlebar.

Makes sense to me. He's reminding cyclists to be super attentive about their own safety when they are on the road: "Adopt a safety-first mindset and consistently make safe decisions on the side of caution,". That should be our mindset when we're riding too and for the experienced road user, is it not true that there are b*stard motorist on the road? Maybe we were one of them on a bad day.. Only human..

I don't know why must rely on the government for this!? Don't they remind us of this when we pass our license? Can't we think for ourselves when we are on the road? Can't we educate ourselves? Does the government need to tell us right from wrong all the time? The government can't stop an accident from happening no matter how many laws they put into effect. Don't talk about deterrence either as that did not stop the number of motor vehicles from increasing over the years. Seems like a lot of people like to risk their license and lives driving/riding on the road instead of taking public transport. And for the record, how many more restrictions do you want to impose on motorists when there are so many of it already?

Most do not even cycle much. They hang their bicycles at the back or on top of their cars. They will only start cycling once they get to their destination. Drivers bring their attitude even when they are cycling and expect motorist to look out for them.

I think some drivers need to learn to give and take, some are posting very insensitive comments here and there on Facebook and etc... They feel that they paid COE and taxes, thus they have a right of way or something. This is just like drivers who dislike motorbikes because COE and taxes are much cheaper, once again they feel like they have an extra right because they paid more...

Want to try pitch an argument with them also no use, they don't have the logic to understand, think they are correct and have won the argument, guess that's why there's a saying 'Ignorance is a bliss', lose argument but don't realise it...

There are of course both good drivers and bad drivers, same for cyclists, good and bad. Once had a taxi driver follow behind me approaching a junction, I on bicycle, not fast mah, so signal to him to overtake, instead he waited till I pass the junction then made his turn there, good driver I would say.

I think the culture we have here in Sg only makes things more complicated, messages don't get across properly... Hope the ignorance will stop soon, let's have some peace please.

Yup, thats why its hard to predict if they would be using the traffic crossing or follow a vehicle too.

Yeah, I think they should realise that no bell or whatever will deter someone knocking into them in a blind spot. Even bikes cannot be heard at times.

No Law can stop a person from driving recklessly because as long as they are not caught, they will continue to drive or ride like a maniac. ITs like saying you fine a person for not signalling and cut into your lane ? Our TPs nowadays rather catch you for modification than you driving recklessly.

Its more of education to the public that lives are involved with reckless driving. You can choose to ride carefully, but another person might not. The big hooha is caused firstly by someone who drove carelessly, not because he cannot think or he is uneducated.

Other countries do have this awareness example on the radio, each morning to drive safely or commercials that make ppl think twice as there is a consequence.

Cyclists cannot demand for equal right on the road simply because they do not have the speed to regulate with the traffic flow. Can you imagine a cyclist hogging Lane 1 ?

Then there is also an issue on compensation because cyclists are not required by law to have insurance cover.

I have no problem giving cyclists their 1.5m margin if they ride in a single file, keep to the extreme left lane, and compile with traffic rules.

The current situation with these hobbyist cyclists is that they cycle in big group, often abeast of each other and taking up the entire lane. When they do stop at traffic lights, they occupy the entire lane 1, 2 ,3. When the Green light comes on, you can see some of them having problems clipping their shoes onto their pedals, and holding up the traffic. Most of them don't even bother to stop, especially when turning left at the junction, and not giving way to pedestrains at crossings.

If cyclists want respect, then they must first respect other road users.

But they don't. ;)

Here's another perspective. Cyclist are another, more extreme, more irritating version of SOME motorcyclists.

You know? Some bikers...

- they complain about being tailgated on lane 1 (but dunno how to use brains and move to lane 2 when clear),

- complain about cars not giving them space to lanesplit, but temselves lanesplit like fuccking c0cksters.

- complain that car drivers are dangerous, but themselves lanesplit through traffic like fighter pilots

and do you know whats more irriating than hobbyist cyclists and cocksters bikers ? Motorised bicycles.

These maniacs think they are bikers because they wear helmet, can accelerate to 40kph without breaking a sweat and lane spilt like cockster bikers with total disregard of traffic rules like hobbyist cyclists. They can do all these with pillion. o_O
