Bowling: Singapore's Remy Ong still in 4th spot at AMF World Cup

SINGAPORE : Singapore's Remy Ong is still in fourth position after three days of competition at the AMF Bowling World Cup.

Remy had 1,429 pinfalls over six games on Wednesday, with a three-day total of 4,188 pinfalls.

Australian Jason Belmonte maintained his top position with a total of 4,373 pinfalls.

The event is being held at the SuperBowl SAFRA Mount Faber. - CNA

Bowling: Singapore's Valerie moves up to 6th spot at AMF World Cup

SINGAPORE : Following in the footsteps of compatriot Remy Ong, Singapore's Valerie Teo also inched her way up the leader board at the AMF Bowling World Cup.

From 27th position on Day One to 23rd on the second day, Valerie is now in sixth spot with a 3,842 pinfall total.

Remy is playing his Day 3 games on Wednesday night.

Valerie, a medical student at the National University of Singapore, has skipped her examinations to take part in the World Cup tournament.

And despite the pressure, the 19-year-old was determined to put up a good performance, inching up the leader board.

The strong home support also helped her in topping Day 3 with 1,442 pinfalls over six games.

Valerie said: "Today, we kind of focus on keeping the tempo down, keeping the ball in line. More or less of a narrow focus on what I am suppose to do rather than the outcome."

In overall top women's position is Shalin Zulkifli, Malaysia's veteran of six World Cups.

The 26-year-old maintained her overnight lead with a three-day total of 4,256 pinfalls.

There were also good news for the bowlers. The sport could be included in the 2012 Olympics.

Mr Heikki Sarso, President of the World Tenpin Bowling Association, said: "The Beijing Olympics, the case is close. But the next one, we will try hard because the programme is fixed already in 2008, and the next one there is a possibility for everyone."

He said he was confident of this as the sport has met all the requirements set out by the International Olympic Committee. - CNA

Bowling: Remy Ong clinches semi-final berth in AMF World Cup

SINGAPORE : Top Singapore bowler Remy Ong is through to the semi-finals of the AMF Bowling World Cup.

Ong overcame Canadian Jack Guay to earn his place in the semis, and will play Norway's Petter Hansen in the last four on Sunday.

Ong's form had been inconsistent going into Saturday's quarter-finals.

But the left-handed hook bowler showed none of that as he took the first game by 206 pinfalls against Guay's 193.

The Canadian came back strong in the second game, blazing the lanes with 11 strikes to end with a 279 total.

So it was down to the third game, where both players were neck and neck.

Ong's mental toughness helped him to clinch the game with 223 pinfalls as Guay could only manage 218.

"I'm actually through 33 percent of the tournament. I'm left with hopefully two more matches; that is actually 100 percent. So another 33 percent and the last games and hopefully I will make it to the finals, and hopefully I will do better than I did in Latvia in 2003, which is second," the Singaporean said.

In the women's event, top seed, Malaysian Shalin Zulkifli once again faltered when it mattered most.

She lost to the defending champion, Canada's Kerrie Ryan-Ciach, by two games to one.

The Canadian, though, was modest about her win.

"I didn't feel like the favourite coming into my match. Sahlin is a great world bowler and she blew away the field in qualifying. She was probably the favourite there," she said.

Ciach is now closer to retaining her title as she meets Puerto Rico's Yoselin Leon in the last four.

The second semi-final for the women will be between Filipino Liza Del Rosario and American Shannon Pluhowsky.

The other semi-final for the men will see Israel's Yahav Rabin taking on Finland's Kai Virtanen. - CNA
