similarly, only a commuter here. The rear shock definitely had a noticeable effect. The front though... I'm not sure if I have the preload set right. Most of the time it works, but very rarely, it feels as if I don't have enough damping going on in front. Definitely a big change from stock.

 

The shop that installed it for me I'd rather not recommend, so I'm not announcing it here. There was some manufacturing delay it seemed, so the shipping took a while. But installation was fairly quick, 1/2 day for front, 30 minutes for rear.

I don't really want to spend loads of money on the bike (although rear shock, GBracing Engine Covers and Akra full exhaust system are already installed).

Yeah, same here with the öhlins rear. A lot more composed going through turns, and hitting uneven road.

 

The front, I cranked up some damping, and it all seems well now.

 

engine cover and exhaust seem more cosmetic to me, not quite as important as suspension and braking (which is good enough for me, last bike I used Brembo 19 RCS, and this bike performs almost as well).

 

Love the bike to bits. Love how I can stick it in 5th and go scooter mode—the engine will pull from 30 to illegal speeds no problem. Or, bring it up to 7000+ rpm, and be a hooligan. I also like the nakedness—I don't tour, so the max 40min-1h ride locally is not at all tiring. Just got to make sure you get a quiet helmet though...

Just an update. On a hunch, I adjusted the fork legs back to its standard position (the mech which installed my front fork dropped the yokes, i.e. made the legs stick out a bit at the top). Handling improved tremendously. I then adjusted the preload back to standard 5mm (mech had adjusted it to >+10 mm). Handling improvement again. Lastly I changed my tires, old tires were getting worn and squared off. Even better improvement.

 

Moral of the story: If you get aftermarket shocks, set everything back to standard first, unless you're super heavy and you know what you're doing.

 

Also: stock BT09 tyres are pretty sucky. Get some good stuff when you can. I'm riding Metzeler M5, with less than 200km, feels great so far.

Yamaha offer a free ECU remap that alters the throttle response.

You can call Hong Leong and ask, it is free.

But

Although it made the bike far more user friendly in Standard mode, it lost the edge in A (sports) mode.

Once remapped there is no going back to the original factory map.

Hard to say. What was the last bike you rode?

 

the MT-09 is very light, almost the same weight as the super4, but with an engine more than double the capacity, so you can imagine the kind of acceleration you can get up to.

 

Generally speaking, as someone who didn't ride for 5 years after last riding a super4, and then jumping onto a Fazer 1000, i think it's doable. Scary at first, cos the acceleration is amazing. But the throttle works both ways. It's always possible to go slowly, then progressively get used to the pickup. Just make sure you don't get into panic situations and turn the throttle by reflex as those reflexes are likely to be way out of whack.

Going to start my class 2 lessons soon, but I'm already eyeing the MT09. Was considering a full 1000cc bike, but decided that I prefered something lighter and not as power-crazy. Those MT10, GSX-S1000 and their co-hort are crazy powerful. I'm afraid I can't handle that kind of power and end up in a ditch or dead.

 

I think a 700-800cc bike (the MT 09 is close enough at 850cc) is probably better for a new class 2 rider. You can always upgrade after a couple of years. I'm currently riding a Super4 Revo.

 

Just my opinion and I could be totally wrong.

Too late. It's done. Transfer done today, and I'm already missing the bike.

 

I'll miss hitting illegal speeds even in second gear, I'll miss the Öhlins giving the confidence to go all the way to the edge of the tyres, I'll miss being able to get away from the stinking mass of vehicles at red lights with a simple crack of the throttle.

 

What I won't miss though: getting wet on the expressways while the next shelter is minutes ahead, arriving at my clients' location hot and sweaty, having to don the jacket, helmet, gloves in hot sunny days to go on to the next location, stupid white smoke diesel exhaust, stupid 2T smoke (although I must say some brands smell sweet), and f*&kers who don't check blind spot and try to murder me.

 

Let's see how bikeless-ness treats me. Who knows, maybe I'll be back?
