A Singaporean man has been sentenced to a day’s jail and fined S$4,300 (RM$10,000) for attempting to bribe a Malaysian traffic policeman with S$21 (RM$50).

According to the New Straits Times (NST), bus driver Tay Soon Chuan, 42, pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court on Tuesday after the charge was read out to him in Mandarin.

It was reported that Tay committed the offence at Km18.3 of the Lima Kedai-Nusajaya Highway on May 30 after being nabbed for speeding by traffic policemen.

Police constable Muhammad Afizi Salleh said Tay offered him cash to avoid being issued a summons, before the policeman advised him not to do so.

NST said he appealed to judge Habibah Mohamed Yusof for leniency as he was the sole breadwinner of his family with two young children. However, deputy public prosecutor Noorfazlin Hamdan said his punishment should be a deterrent to the public.

Tay was not represented in court and said he had to borrow money from relatives to pay the fine.

Some regular commuters to Malaysia said they were surprised when told about the bribery case.

Sales executive Mohd. Azhar, 32, told Yahoo! Singapore, “I’ve heard of cases where cops have asked for money in return of not issuing summons so I think they are cleaning up corruption across the causeway judging from this case.”

Ramod H., 34, an engineer agreed. He said, “I’ve been told it was quite common to settle your summons with their traffic policemen on the spot and not at the police station.”

Another commuter, who declined to be named, felt this could be a one-off incident. He said, “A traffic cop once gave me an option; to either pay [give] him the fine amount for my traffic offence or make my way to the police station and when I told him I didn’t have any ringgit on me, he had the nerve to ask for Singapore dollars.”

Haha, I think that man is suay. Usually there is a way to indirectly offer bribe.

It goes something like this : "Sir, I'm quite in a hurry. Do u mind settling this for me? (offer the money)"
