Rectify? Maybe u can try changing the valves and valve guides.. Look through this thread and u can see one of the FJRian toking about it.. Otherwise, look at FJRowners forum.. They tok alot about it...

Do we have to do it? Not really I think.. Its only no tick and got tick.. Performance wise i feel its more or less the same. My FC is about 17km/litre. Better than some of those with no-tick. So i dun think the ticking is affecting the performance very much...

Whatever it is, my mileage is at 46,000km and so far no significant drop in FC or performance.. Just enjoy the bike, dun think too much...

bro maybe one of the ride we meet up and see whether our bike sound the same or not..mine will start the toking sound when it hits the 3000rpm at any gear.. but when ask mong tong he say its normal..

by the way yr fuel consumption is 17/litre??? dats abt 340 on normal tank.. dats alot eh.. u nv go high speed one ah?? u oso dont drag yr gears one huh??? at wat rpm u changed gear mine..

my normal riding will be abt4000 rpm start to shift gear up..

Singapore rds how to go high speed... Usually 100-110km/hr lor..

I dun really see what RPM i change gear.. But i reckon its below 4K.. Low gear drag to 4K abit heavy... But pick up from junction I'll drag to break off from main traffic...

Hey sonic, where did u mount the horns? From the FJRtech, they need to file off the inner cowl if u were to mount the horns to the original location...

My TDM/GS just bot for me for 15.90.. I was thinking i'll just mount it at the front wheel...

Sorry to say not true about ABS not having it. I've heard plenty of ABS FJRs with it, including my own. My ABS FJR had it at 45,000 km (

To rectify the problem, stand by $4000 or more. 80% of the parts you need, Hong Leong don't stock, so need to import in from USA. The BOLTS alone for the job costs US$100... don't talk about valve and valve guides yet. Remember to get the valves with the dot marking, otherwise the same problem will come back again.

I opened up my FJR engine, looked at the valves, felt them shaking left and right in my fingers, closed up the engine and pushed it into the shop. Ask Ashenz, he's seen my valves. (loss on bike price $3000, open up engine cost $1300, and $1000 un-removable accessories on the bike). To this day I still think it was worth it.

Got a few question that need your help..

1) What bolts are u refering to? Cannot use back the old ones? Cuz corrosion or what?

2) How u order the Valves with the Red Dot? Diff part number from the one without the Red Dot?

3) "$1000 un-removable accessories on the bike" U mean u these accerssories were damaged during the rectification? What were they?

4) Where did u do the rectification?

Sorry ah... Very curious to know..

1) FJR uses 10 special angle bolts. They are one-use only. Their threads change when then go into the slot; whenever you open up a FJR engine, all 10 bolts have to change new ones; even if you piu chiu insert the bolts wrongly during installation also gone case, need to get a new one. When I was doing my overhaul I search the whole of Singapore only got THREE... (for fcuk have 3 bolts for something that is a set of 10???). There was also a worldwide shortage of FJR gaskets last year (due to people doing valve stem changes).

2) Yes they are diffent part number and they have a dot stamped on them.

3) For one, HEL brake lines...(keep in mind how many lines ABS machine has... and Vector One charge by the line) install liao how to take out? Also custom imported billet stainless steel fork braces (imported from USA, sibeh chio, ask Ashenz)... old fork cover remove liao, cannot replace... among others stuff...

4) I didn't do the rectification, I just close up the engine and push into the shop and rode out my STX... 3 month wait for parts I thought was not worth it. Its actually a fairly easy replacement job that most top end motorshops like Mah and Loois and other sports bike specialists can do. No modification needed, just replace the relevant parts... read up FJRowners.com , they have a detailed list.

Bottom line is this... FJR is a new bike. Right now, nobody I know has gone past 100,000+ km on it. So who knows? All we know that the valve guides are wearing out... at a scary rate (well I know and my mechanic know... I doubt even HL has opened up an engine for overhaul yet). Everyone knows the final outcome; broken valves = destroyed engine. the vavle stem drops into the cylinder chamber and next thing you know the entire engine needs to be changed (provided you don't crash and die). Will it ever happen? I don't know. maybe they got so much metal on the stem that it will never break. BTW the wearing out is heat related. of my 16 valves, all the exhaust valves were worn down to the point that you can shake them from side to side and hear the exact ticking. only half the intake valves were worn down.

But I do know this also to be true when your bike ticks:

1) Loss of power, and increased heat (compression loss, plus heat is escaping from engine rather than going out the exhaust).

2) Lack of peace of mind.

When I bought the FJR, I had it in mind as a bike I could keep until the end of COE. It was clearly not going to be so, so I traded in for a brand that most all mechanics in SG agree is relaible (plus some ST11 already run 300,000 km)-- Honda.

The one thing that made me change my mind: What is Honda's other major product-- Cars. Their motorcycle VTEC technology is now in cars, so the 2 divisions are sharing info... and Yamaha?--- Pianos... how to share?

I hear it because I'm trained to hear it. I spent a lot of time listenning to recordings of the FJR tick from the internet, the various kinds of tick, before even opening the engine (which I knew would cost $1000+), I KNEW I had the problem. I was so sure I bet $1000 on it, and unfortunately, my ears were correct. There is the intermittant tick, the continunous tick, etc. Confirm I have heard at least 3 other ABS 03 models tick CLEARLY.Sometime tick sometimes don't tick.. means you will develop a continunous tick down the road.

Please don't give me that BS about only me having it; if HUNDREDS of people on FJRowners.com say they have evidence of it, in the USA people on the YES scheme (Yamaha maintainence scheme) have had the parts changed by Yamaha (valve and valve guides) and don't forget WILDCHILD who volunteered his bike to be sacrificed in order to prove to Yamaha (he sent his bike for dismantling and destructive analysis). But Yamaha refuses to admit the problem. Also, if there was no problem, why was I threated by (name with-held) to keep my mouth shut on this forum? Have you opened up your FJR engine and seen its valves?

You bike is new, I don't expect a tick from it. According to what some say, the new models of FJR Yamaha change the valves and valve guides already, so it may never develop a tick.
