Hi All,

Needed some advice. Tried searching all the forums but couldn't find the answer to this - apologies if I missed out a previous thread.

I was wondering how safe is it to lock an expensive ~600SGD helmet to your bike in Singapore using a standard helmet lock? Is the practice prevalent here? Are thieves known to target helmets chained to the bike?

I guess the alternative if the above is not recommended is to carry your helmet with you wherever you go which can be a bit cumbersome.

Would appreciate your thoughts!

I was contemplating about locking my FF to the bike too, still squeezing my helmet and jacket in the box.

Someone suggests that I place the helmet in the helmet draw string bag before locking instead of locking it 'naked' which would attract theft. Of course, if the thief is determined to target the helmet, all it is needed is to cut the strap and walk away with that helmet. My question is how easy is to replace the strap and is the replacement cost justify the offence? Thief will think twice about committing the offence and risk of being caught and the need to pay to replace the cut strap.

So looks like I will try it out - lock my FF to the bike using a good quality chain. Lets hope I don't need to post an update in this thread later on...lol!

If you're locking your FF helmet to your bike, pls don't lock to your strap - lock using a chain around the chin portion seems better.

In general, regardless of expensive or cheap helmets, thieves will be interested in your helmet if it's easy for them to take it. Cutting the strap is very easy for them.

i personally got a 42l box just for my ff helmet. i really don't recommend hanging your helmet outside esp when it costs $600. when it gets stolen it will make a hole in your pocket plus you can't ride your bike back anymore... if you don't want a box you can consider getting a helmet bag. a sling type one is very uncomfortable so i recommend a bagpack type as i have one too haha.

Normal cheap2 PSB approved helmet, no one cares. Hang those PSB not approved Arais, depends on where you park or whether you lucky or not.

Pretty much why I think people who use open face Arais as a daily helmet = stupid posers, make your life difficult must carry that helmet everywhere when you can just get a Nova and hang on the bike, lose oso heart not pain.

Don't lock your helmet to the bike visibly if you park in Suntec.

1. Their cameras do not cover the areas where your bikes are

2. The thieves just cut the helmet away.. don't know why it made absolutely no sense to me at all

3. justforme is right it does put a big hole in your pocket

I invested in a box for what was fitted $120.... cost of helmet lost .... $500 .... total $620. Was just too comfortable and should have just bought a box in the first place, but didn't want the bike to look ugly LOL

Lesson learnt the hard way, as they say low crime doesn't mean no crime.

think thats not a fair statement..those who put their money on Arais value their head more to a point of spending 600$ to keep them safe and a peace of mind.

I don't see whats wrong with that. Dont make this a hate thread.

Pls understand why people buy expensive helmets, even if its for posing i don't find it stupid. to lose a helmet be it expensive or cheap, ppl will still find it annoying as it cause inconvenience.

For fear of losing my helmet I sacrifice my comfort and possibly my brain....hmmm....don't think I'd take that gamble. Thank you.

I've lost a helmet before, but the bugger didn't cut the strap. He broke the helmet lock that came on the bike.

However I have seen an uncle leaving his helmet unlocked and uncovered on his bike every day and after all this time it's still there. But then again that helmet if give away I think people also don't want...hahaha..

I use a daiso combi lock and pull the cable through the helmet chin guard. Cable is then locked to my luggage rack. Then cover with a helmet bag. This method will only works for full face and if my box is full with my bag. I have come to terms with the fact that if someone really wants to take it, they will do everything to take it. So try to make it difficult to deter but sometime it's unavoidable. Another trick is to cover your bike with bike cover so ppl dont see the helmet itself. Last time some helmets has stickers related to gangs and ppl avoid these hahaha but nowadays I doubt that trick will work.

Mine's a cheapo half face helmet that I padlock to my bike's backrest. I've padlocked both mine and my pillion's helmets without getting it lost so far. I've done this at many places in Singapore, be it at shopping centres, public car parks in Singapore to other public places in Malaysia.

Imo Arai open face isn't gonna protect your face any better than your cheapo helmet, very simple reason, your jaw is exposed, ever seen someone broke his jaw in an accident? Thinking that you bought something more expensive would give more protection is misguided at best. I might have been unfair to call it stupid but to call it safer, I don't think so.

Might as well go Full face or flip ups if you're talking safety. If you're talking glamor, up to you.

[Edited: my bad, reading comprehension failed me. I agree with your opinion of those who wear expensive but open-face helmets. :)]

If you want to wear a full-face, you've got to carry it or store it in a large enough box. I wouldn't leave mine on the bike for the same reasons mentioned above.
