MacWorld: New iPod line + "touchscreen" iPod rumor true

There was a recent MacWorld convention and exhibition where Steve Jobs (the founder of Apple) unveiled three all-new anodised and colourful iPods:

iPod Nano (3rd Generation)

Now video capable, shorter and wide-screen'ed, includes CoverFlow!

http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/8121/tmpphpkg6w3dii6.jpg http://i12.tinypic.com/549svud.jpg

iPod Classic

Used to be called iPod Video,

Now comes in 80GB and 160GB editions

also includes everything off of the iPod Nano and more...

http://i9.tinypic.com/54bac21.jpg http://i4.tinypic.com/677yrm8.jpg

iPod Touch

Yep, the rumor is true.

Apple really did invent a touchscreen iPod, just like its big brother Apple iPhone

http://i10.tinypic.com/5y193ck.jpg http://i18.tinypic.com/2mhwk88.jpg

(shown here is the "iPod Touch" with an enlarged CoverFlow)

Psst...did I also say? iPod Touch comes with Apple Safari WebBrowser

(duh, there's WiFi Wireless B/G for that too!)

http://i7.tinypic.com/4mim6ns.png

===============

All iPods (excluding iPod Touch) comes multi-coloured anodised metal front bezel, has a metallic rear.

There's a Product(red) version of the iPod nano as well. Proceeds go to the Fight Aids cause in Africa.

Office 2008 for Mac, due Jan 15th

All new, slightly similar to Office 2007 for Windows but with more features, and works natively faster on an Intel Mac as it is a certified "Universal" application

Microsoft on Tuesday announced its expanded product line-up for Office 2008 for Mac, which is expected to be available on retail shelves on January 15th, 2008.

Office 2008 for Mac (Core Suite edition) ----

Price: US$400 for new ($240 for upgrade version)

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Excel

Microsoft PowerPoint

Entourage (Mac version of Outlook)

Microsoft Exchange Server** support

Additional Automator tools.

(**My note: I heard that MS Exch server support is improved for this '08 version, unlike the the Office 2004 version, which had some limitations, as observed by some System Admins)

Office 2008 for Mac (Special Media edition) ---

This edition (US$500 for new, $300 for upgrade) combines all Office 2008 applications with the Microsoft Expression Media digital asset management system.

According to the company, Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition is designed for professional users who need Microsoft Exchange Server support as well as Automator tools and are looking for a single solution to meet their productivity and digital asset management needs.

Office 2008 for Mac (Home and Student Edition) ---

This special education and consumer version (US$150), provides the basics of Office 2008 for Mac for home and school users: it includes three user licenses for use by consumers and students but does not include connectivity to Microsoft Exchange Server or support for automated workflows.

As showcased at Macworld Expo 2007, Office 2008 introduces smart features such as Ledger Sheets in Excel 2008, My Day with Entourage 2008, Publishing Layout View in Word 2008 and SmartArt graphics in PowerPoint 2008. Entourage 2008 also features improved Windows Exchange Server support, with enhanced reliability and functionality.

Err...ya got it wrong bro,

If your computer is showing an IP address of 169.__.__.__ means that ya notebook can't seem to connect to anything (it can't even find your router)

BTW, I have a 2700 as well. Take a look at how ya should configure it:

1) Under System Preferences > Network

Choose the "DHCP" mode

http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/7326/wirelessosxnetworkprefexm5.th.jpg

2) On your router, to make it work under "DHCP" mode as well, set your 2700 this way:

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/292/2700dhcpax6.th.gif

This should work...

Biang eh...where'd he learn computer networking from :faint:

(I've heard Shingtel hires interns to do helpdesk, so maybe that's why...)

I've looked at your settings, and know it should work but it's strange that it isn't working out in your case...

Try turning off your Mac OS X firewall, and disabling any software firewalls.

Then click Renew DHCP Lease.

Your mac should happily receive a 192.___.___.___ address from your 2700

If it's still 169.___.___.___ (that's an APIPA Address in geek speek), your computer somehow cannot talk to the router -- even if it says your comp is connected to it.

I'm not an expert in batteries (and a Computer Electrical Engineer for that matter...) but I found this good resource on the internet:

"Keep Your Battery Cool and at 40% Charge"

Laptop batteries have finite life spans. Whether you use the power cord and remove the battery it will lengthen the life of the battery.

Li-Ion laptop battery lifespan is approximately 1000 charge cycles, or 2-4 years under normal operating conditions.

Keeping the battery in a cool place can prolong its life but not in a period of extended storage. The Li-ion battery should be stored at 40 percent rather than full-charge state.

The battery ages even if not used. For best results, keep the battery cool. In addition, store the battery at a 40 percent charge level. Never fully charge or discharge the battery before storage. The 40 percent charge assures a stable condition even if self-discharge robs some of the battery's energy. Most battery manufacturers store Li-ion batteries at 15°C (59°F) and at 40 percent charge.

Keeping a laptop battery on constant charge is and never using it is not good for the laptop battery. Run the battery down and recharging it at least once every month.

Run the battery down to zero, and recharge it back once a month -- Basic battery maintenance.

This ensures that the battery stays healthy and delays the end-of-life for the battery.

IMO, apart from the abovementioned battery maintenance tip, I find the rest of the paragraphs very confusing and wordy -- In fact, nobody in this world have rock-solid answers on how to really prolong the life of your battery and people are debating on this topic on the forums on this as well, believe it or not.

...so it's back to the store for a new battery after 2 years (and again, $$ earning tactics for the salespeople)

Hey thanks for the information regarding the battery.:thumb:

Just found out from my friends friend that workz in Mac shop says better take out the battery when using the 'electricity power'. Hmmm?

Fancy the "CoverFlow" in Apple iTunes that shows you a graphical representation of your "albums laid out in front" for you to "flip them through"?

Well, now Finder has this feature as well.

Microsoft Office 2008 (for the Mac), out soon

Macintosh consumers eagerly anticipating its release on January 15th...

http://imgbolt.com/public/69393/3-word-sm%5B1%5D.jpg

Users eagerly await the release of Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac, especially those that use Intel-based Macs, as this will be the first incarnation of the suite to include Universal application support. The suite has been redesigned to be more “available” to users, introducing a number of new elements, as well as reconfiguring old features to make them more obvious to new and regular users alike. While Office 2008 doesn’t ship until the start of Macworld on January 15th, Microsoft has provided MacNN with a preview of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Entourage ahead of the announcement.

MS Word is almost certainly the most frequently used application the world over, finding use in both business and home environments for reports, letters, and fliers, among other document types. Users are now able to quickly and easily construct rich documents using Document Elements, Quick Tables, Charts, SmartArt Graphics, and WordArt; these options are readily visible from any document underneath the various formatting buttons.

Document Elements (pictured below) offers a wide selection of literary elements, such as cover pages, table of content styles, headers and footers, and bibliography variations. Elements are easily added, requiring only that the user click on the desired item, and it will automatically insert itself into the document. Elements can be customized by either modifying the existing parameters for generated graphics, or by adding in your own images.

http://imgbolt.com/public/69398/3-word-elements-in1%5B1%5D.jpg

Document Elements feature, opened up on the familiar oversized toolbar, most known to Windows users as the "Microsoft Office Ribbon"

Word’s Publishing Layout View allows users to create documents in a method similar to how Pages works in Apple’s iWork suite. Written content smoothly flows around images automatically (just like how magazines are written) when placed in a body of text, while templates allow users to create their documents around a starting point. Guides cling to elements, enabling users to create uniform designs and layouts for flyers, catalogues, or other stationery.

http://imgbolt.com/files/103312/News/3-word-publish-in1%5B1%5D.jpg

The Publishing Layout view

The Notebook Layout View allows users to take free-form notation in a well-organized manner. Creating a Notebook presents a default three-tabbed page with a “plus” tab that generates extra sections. The Notebook section is a welcome addition for students and professionals, enabling those users to quickly generate paragraph- or point-based documents with hand-drawn pictures and diagrams. Notebooks can have a number of different styles as well, changing the appearance of tabs, rings and pages.

http://imgbolt.com/files/103312/News/3-word-notebook-in1%5B1%5D.jpg

The Notebook Layout View

Word’s redesigned Mail Merge Manager provides step-by-step assembly of documents for use as a mailer, or where multiple recipients are expecting a letter. Word presents a small floating window with six sections that represent different levels of customization. Once all of the desired fields are complete, Word sends the document to Entourage to be distributed.

The Mail Merge Manager sidebar

Microsoft’s Mac Business Unit have made numerous improvements to Word, and in the process, have made it more accessible and Mac-like. The new Open XML file format adds a lot of versatility and customization to documents, while the lack of macro support makes Word more secure against macro virus attacks.

Jobs unveils world's thinnest, new MacBook Air at Macworld

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/9254/app080115mbairsmrk5.jpg http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/7541/macbookairfrontwz8.th.jpg

(click for larger image)

Apple CEO Steve Jobs today unveiled a new, smaller MacBook at Macworld Conference & Expo during his keynote speech called the MacBook Air. The world's thinnest notebook, according to Jobs, weighs just 3-pounds, is 0.8-1.2-inches thin, and features a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display. The MacBook Air features a 1.67GHz or 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of memory standard, an 80GB hard drive, and is small enough to fit inside a manila envelope. The MacBook Air is priced at $1,800, and will begin shipping in just two weeks. Apple is already taking pre-orders for the device. [photo courtesy of Engadget] (updated)

The MacBook Air also features a built-in iSight camera, and includes a full-sized backlit keyboard with a trackpad that includes multi-touch gesture support.

Users can turn on different types of gestures in the MacBook Air's settings, and the notebook features Apple's patented flip-down door with a USB 2 port as well as micro-DVI connectivity and a headphone jack. The MacBook Air features 802.11n Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR wireless functionality, and does not include an optical drive as some rumors had suggested. Separate USB-powered optical SuperDrives made specifically for the MacBook Air are available for $100.

The MacBook Air's new CPU is as wide as a dime, and as thick as a nickel. Apple commissioned Intel to produce a shrunken version of its Core 2 Duo processor that is 60 percent smaller, and the company came through.

Jobs touts five hours of battery life using the MacBook Air with Wi-Fi enabled while browsing the Web, and the tiny notebook 'borrows' disc drives from other computers via Wireless networking when the optional optical drive is unavailable.

Jobs says the MacBook Air's packaging has 56 percent less volume than the standard MacBook, and the device features an aluminum case with a mercury-free and arsenic-free glass display. The laptop's circuit boards are also BFR- and PVC-free, as promised by Jobs after environmental issues crept into the news late last year.
