An Extra 50kg on your bike means you not gonna need

MORE STOPPING DISTANCE

Although I ride a Bigger bike now...

It had been a while since I had a Pillion.

Surprise-surprise...

Stopping at my usual distance from front vehicles

is just not enough...

Long, long ago...

On my DT125 scrambler with my pillion...

I remember one evening along Thomson Rd/Sin Ming Junction towards the City.

I was a Little fast.

The lites turn amber to red.

I tried braking... at that point...

The bike was not going to stop in time.

The brakes not good enough.

The momentum to great!

So.. I blow my Horn & Flash my lites.

It was Most Fortunate (for me & pillion)

That I was able to catch the attention of the cars that was

about to turn in to Sin Ming.

I would had crash into them in any of them had turn.

Close Call!

Drop your speed approach junctions!

THOSE RIDERS Who Had Not Read RIDING WITH THE HORNETS

Please read below. If u are riding with us.

It is Important that u understands how our rides are conducted.

It is for the safety of all! Thks!

Riding with the Hornets

Welcome to the Hornet Team

Hope u will have many enjoyable & safe rides with Us.

Guide for the Team

1. Be Courteous

Bike should be in Good Condition

(If u service your bike... do it a week before the ride.

Any problem surfacing... bike would be in Spore)

Get to know the rest of the team.

Smile & say Hi!

2. Be On time

Won't be nice to let your team wait too long for u.

(Msg me if u gonna be late the time u be reaching or unable to come)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/2100spectrum/Staggered01M_resize.jpg

3. Staggered Formation

Staggered Formation on One Lane & Singe File on Small roads

Staggered Formation will give us space for emer manoeuver.

And space on the side if bike has a problem.

Speed: Will ride at a speed that will overtake most of the traffic at a slow rate.

As such, we would be on the overtaking lane along the highway a fair bit.

Signal and Move Left if a Faster vehicle is coming from the behind

Flash the one infront to do likewise.

2nd Link: 110kmh

4. Over Take on the Right

There will be rare times when traffic is slow and we overtake on the left.

Or when vehicle road hog (We are not gonna follow him all the way to KL)

Overtake slowly...

May use breakdown lane... in a crawling jam... look out for debris.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/2100spectrum/Overtaking02M_resize.jpg

5. When Overtaking

Do So when it is safe.

Do not be pressured to overtake.

We will wait for u.

On the other hand... overtake quickly when the opportunity arise.

Until u do... the rest behind can't.

Pass and and move forward.

Make sure there's enough room for others to fall behind u.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/2100spectrum/BikesonTour3.jpg

6. Know the Ride Plan

Know the route, km to run & rest point.

Will help to find the team if separated.

It will also be more interesting for u.

7. Hand Signals

Point to the tank if u need fuel.

To your head if u need rest...

Wave to the last bike to continue if u just

wanna stop for Some non-emer stuff eg wearing sunglasses...

Quickly catch up after that.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/2100spectrum/BikesonTour5.jpg

8. Markers

If there are no markers on a junction... GO STRAIGHT!

Anyone riding behind the leader automatically becomes a marker

When Pointed to a location to mark...

Park a safe spot.

Signal lite on the direction of turn.

Watch out for stones that usually gather around junctions.

Wait for the last bike to pass...

Then move back to the front.

9. Last Bike

He will be last to make sure no one is left behind.

It is important not to hold the team by riding too slowly.

If u see the gap for the bike in front is getting bigger...

U are too slow! catch up.

The Formation should be tight enough to be safe

And not let any other vehicle get in between.

They are a source of danger when the infiltrate our formation.

That includes bikes not from our team.

10. Lost

If u are lost... Msg/call me. Don't Worry.

Will give u direction to return to the team.

May not get me immediately as I be riding.

But will return your call at regroup pt.

(please Pm me your Hp & a Next of Kin if u have not done it)

11. Choose a Buddy

Buddy someone...

It is the quickest way to know if u are missing or need help.

It is important for each to be responsible in his style of riding.

Safe rides is a culture with this team and

We look after each other at all levels.

Biking has it's risk... we keep it at a Min

12. Bike Type

For day trip: Phantom 150, SP... or likes

For longer trip: Hornet 250, S4... or likes

It will be too stressful for smaller bikes.

Both the rider & team. Thks.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/2100spectrum/ResizeofDaineseM.jpg

13. Wear Protection

Riding Jacket, jeans/touring pants & Shoes (boots will be gd)

Gloves.

Last line of defence to injury if we do fall.

Full face will help protect your chin/face.

I Know it is a little hot... but once on the move.

It is comfortable.

Always have your rain suit with u.

14. One Lane Please

Stay within one lane As Decided by the Leader.

Be it Center, Over taking or left Lane.

This will help our Marshalls get back to the front quickly.

It is also being courteous to other road user.

Do not overtake the Leader unless there prior arangement to do so.

15. See Children... Wave

We are guest of their country. We must always remember that.

Be Respectful to properties & people we come in contact with.

Somehow with our riding gears... we do look intimidating.

But a wave to the kids always brings a smile.

Riding thru towns: reduce your speed

The Team will do it's best to keep everyone safe.

That means you too will have an important part to play.

For yourself & your team mates.

So let take good care of one another!

There is no Glory if u Crash

The Ride will be delay & plans may have to change.

Injury to your body & damage to your beautiful bike.

Enjoy Your Ride but come home Safe

Important!

As riding has it's risk.

Joining our rides will mean you accept responsible for your own safety.

Also have to check if your pillion is a 1st timer or someone who hasn't been on a bike for a long time (say 1 year or longer?). If that's the case, remember to do a briefing on cornering and how to get on and off the bike.

That's correct... it is always gd to give a briefing to new pillions... :thumb:

And also for heavier pillon not to bend the foot peg by putting his entire wt. when getting on board...

We should encourage all new riders we know to come here...

What makes a good rider?

Good riders have a quiet efficiency in their actions

and this are the factors:

1. A good level of concentration

2. Accurate Observation

3. Matching the bike's speed and direction to the situation

4. Awareness of the risks in a particular road & traffic

5. Keeping Risk to the minimum

6. Know their own limitation, those of the road & machine

7. Attitudes that contribute to road safety

It is not just the speed of your reaction that determinds a safe rider.

But your ability to identify & respond to Hazards!

Young Inexperience riders responds quickly.

One example would be the way they excel in computers games.

But alas... their reaction to traffic hazards are not as fast.

In an electronic game... u just restart...

On the road... the price is higher.

The Ability to detect hazards is learnt like any other skill

And it depends partly on experience.

Or learning from the experiences of others.

(thru reading, discussion with good riders)

More experienced riders develop a sense of trouble.

When the risk arise they monitor them at a subconscious level.

Ready to respond quickly if the situation develops dangerously.

Because they are more aware of the potential danger,

they are more alert to the changing road conditions.

This helps sustain their concentration.

And survive on the Streets!

A thank you note for the administrators of Singaporebikes.com for

For including "Street Smart" on Sticky.

So thk Rustyblade for seeking the approval...

(He is the moderator for this section)

When I first started the thread... never thought it would go this far.

Well with the support of the readers...

This is where we are at. #137.

In many way... the subject had been covered quite throughly.

And I feel it will be a waste to just let this thread fade away.

With that... the request to pin it.

The Post will continue...

but it will probably be a variant of earlier tropics.

What I wish is for more bikers to share their experiences here.

Use this thread to discuss Issues that will be benificial to all of us.

Everyone Learns... at all levels.

Even our very experience bikers get into trouble.

I learn... and at times from the youngest of riders.

The Ultimate hope is for all of our bikers to be safe.

And here we have a tool...

And here we share our experience...

some we learned the painful way.

But in sharing... we all benefit.

Thank You

When riding over a newly re-surfaced road...

It will be a while till the lines are drawn.

When over this stretch... best not squeeze but keep with the

Flow of the Cars... Especially when visiblity is bad.. eg nite or rainy days.

Without well define lanes... vehicles sway between the unseen lanes.

We will have more space to work with behind rather than beside...

Regarding the taxis and motorists that you are worried about, i feel it is half the battle won that you realise the danger involving those motorists. So naturally you would be wary of them and find out what to do when bad situation arises.

Spectrum, thank yous for yr kind words. I am just contributing my little part.

Wow, it's been 1 year and 5 months since the first post was made.

First, I want to congratulate myself for surviving another year of motorcycling.

And I have also just crossed the threshold of a decade of accident-free motorcycling.

Still, I need to remind myself that I cannot take safety for granted. I cannot remain complacent.

To me, safety is a skill. It is not sexy nor demonstrateable like wheeling or stoppie skills. It is hard to boast about, "I did not bang into a lamp post today." But it is the skill that determines life-and-death, hence most important.

Safety skills can never be fully mastered. It can only be better mastered. It is not a certificate that can be achieved or obtained. Through acquiring proper knowledge, safety skill can be improvedfaster. But knowledge alone is never enough as in all skills. It needs to be practised. It also needs experience to get better.

We hope many motorcyclists would benefit from each others good advice and experience. From the many responses over the pages, I believe there are at least some who had benefitted.

But sadly, it is still not enough. For the fatality figures for motorcycling remain constant compared to last year.

Perhaps if you have benefitted from reading the StreetSmart thread, help spread the word to your fellow motorcycling friend who may also benefit from reading this post.:thumb:

:cheer: Finally ... catch up to the latest post n page :cheer:

Have been reading a few pages each night on this thread. Know alot of useful knowledge where training school may have miss out or i nvr pay attention. There questions that came across n have been solve while reading. While some questions r not solve. So will pop a questions once a while to kill my doubts.

Just learn bike lesson this starting of this yr, still quite a newbie with no licence yet. No books of reference[lazy in some way]. So like to ask some questions that may b silly, hope wont offend any1.

:cheeky:

- type warming up.

read about this in one of the post [should b street advice 1 "50% of Crashes happen within the 1st 6 min"]

saying "Another point to note is that your tyre has not warmed up yet, so taking a big turn at speed immediately is risky." So how does 1 have to have the tyre warmed up ?

- A 3 Lane Highway Means 5 Usable Lanes

for this cant remember where it pops out, just curious wat it really means by 3 lane = 5 usable one ??

... thats all for today

50% of the Crashes happens the 1st 6 mins...

Cold tires don't grip too well... that's correct.

Takes about 5-10min for the tyres to warm up.

But the main reason for the crashes is the

Transition to riding... eg settling down to the traffic conditions.

3 lanes means 5 lanes...

For a 3 lane highway/street..

the bikes sometimes uses the space between the lanes

in heavy traffic.

eg. riding on the lines that divides the lanes.

Between vehicles.

It is also call "Filtering"

Feel Free to ask any questions...

Nothing is silly here... when it comes to road safety.

Am sure u will enjoy riding...
