The real test... starts now...

Remember... it's not how slow or fast u ride.

The key is good observations & space.

Always nice to get your 1st licience...

Mine was long, long ago in my vespa @ maxwell center... yep.

Berry long.

We use our own bike, do fig 8..

follow the tester around town with tester making

notes at strategic points...

And we all go to a room to wait for the result.

Me got my immediate class 2...

No need 2b... then 2a....

Denden: Full beam in the day is a good tip... thks. :thumb:

Popular or not so Common Machine

If u get a "Super 4" here in Sunny Spore...

Guess u can't really go very wrong.

Our No. 1 Seller!

The very reason it is so popular is that it is a good bike.

$12 000 is about the price of a New S4.

It's Easy to buy & easy to sell...

Easy spares... & are cheaper.

What's more... It's a Honda ( that's close to being bullet proof)

So it should start every morning without much difficulty!

Then is there anything against a popular bike then...

Bike & Parts get stolen.

....so much so that it becomes a

night mare for the insurance co.

Don't be too surprise if u walk up to your bike and

find your rear suspension missing...

(It's just two nuts)

Now... How about a less popular bike...

U probably catches a few more glances...

More Indivitualistic...

Then spares could be harder to get & cost more.

Selling your bike would be more difficult...

Am sure maintaining a Ducati vs Yamaha will cost a little more.

But then, some of us wouldn't mind.

Generally, by observing the bikes on our roads...

You'll get a pretty good idea what bikes are common

& what are not... and what are rare.

Go chat with owners of the bike u are interested in to find out more.

So count your cost & make your choice!

It is just so convenient!

My 1st bike was a vespa... and I boy did I love that scooter.

And just last week... I was able to rent one to scoot around in Rome.

So the ride was all fresh in me mind.

There's really a lot of advantages using a scooter.

But it is more for the city.

It's light & easy to manoeuver.

Plenty of storage... clean when the weather is wet.

U don't get all the road dirt splashing all over your legs.

Simple to ride as there's no gear change required.

Just dial & go.

And there are a lot of very stylish ones.

I particularly like those done by Gilera.

Economic to run.... a tank full will go forever, almost.

And that should make a lot of reason to own one with the high petrol prices.

A Motorcycle

Control & Rd Holding

The extra weight gives the Motorbike better control & road holding.

A strong safety consideration.

And the big wheels goes over pot holes much better.

Can I safely say more guys ride one vs scooter....

Then Image could also be a factor

But I think ladies prefer something lighter.

For travelling the distance... A motorcycle is essential.

The cross wind factor is gonna be a major factor when on the N-S highway.

But check with Kenny... he's scoot up & down to Thailand ever so often.

Guess the Heavier scooters handle the highways better.

For me... I stay with my motocycles...

U decide!

Hi Spectrum,

I just got my 2a last week. And am now currently searching for a good condition S4 for my 2a bike.

Don't really have any heart thumping love for the S4 but because i know i would be upgrading and hopefully land my dream class 2 bike, I chose to get the reliable and economical S4, just to get me through this 1 yr.

So happens when i read your thread it says something about buying a M/C. What a coincidence!

But the difference in specs and versions for S4 and their prices is a bit mind boggling for me now. Get a new S4 or get a old one.... Decisions decisions.......

Slow in Fast Out, Fast in Never Come Out.

Posted

Saboon: Congratulations!

S4 will be a gd bike till your class 2.

More than enough pwr for city riding.

Recommends a 2nd hand bike as u not gonna keep it for that long.

Normally, a gd 2nd hand buy will be up to 2yr old bike.

Best value as the depreciation is greatest. Best Value.

(New owners should want keep there bike longer)

Minimal maintenance as it is relatively new.

(beside the usual wear & tear Items)

So after a yr... the resale will still be gd.

Especially a popular bike like the S4

(u don't loos too much)

As for the different models...

My S4 friends tells me there's not really a lot of difference.

Just the badge...

Give me a toot in your S4 if u see me on the rd riding my Red Hornet...

Which Brand?

We are spoilt for choice.

Different brand will carry thier individual character.

With with it different level of price.

As buyers, we will need to decide which make will suit us best.

Both interest & budget.

THE BIG 4

The 4 Japaness co. Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha & Kawasaki

all make excellent bikes.

And popularity shows on our roads.

Honda is known for it's reliability & user friendly.

I own 2. Reason being I like the smooth engine.

Quiet Performance & starts everytime I hit the "Start button."

Kawa... Makes Powerful bikes. Not the easiest to handle.

The tech support is not that great here. What a pity.

Yamaha are the ones with the latest design. Trendy like the

MT-03, Fazers... Innovative FJR without clutch.

R1's are very popular here in Spore.

Suzuki... have a gd balance.

The GSX1000R is a winner.

Italian Bikes

Aprilla RSV1000

Lovely bike.

As with the rest of the Italian Bikes.

But it is just a bit too pricy for me... At $33K

Similarly... Ducatis are like the Ferraris of bikes...

but it comes with a high price.

Both in buying & maintain....

The Italian Scooters are doing very well here.

Vespa... My 1st machine... Aprilla,

Gilera... makes beautiful scooters.

The HARLEYS

It's a cult.... They just love this machine.

The noisy V twin... and the image it brings.

Always the Show Bikes of any bike meet.

Not great in perf but had moved to higher level with the V Rod.

Kymco & Dealim

These bikes/scooter takes up a small percentage of our market.

Sturdy machines.

Are really big players in their respective countries.

http://www.kymco.co.uk/images/scooters/xciting-tmb.jpg

BMW

German Technology. Always different.

The GS1200 below is one of their best sellers in Europe. No need to second guess why...

So macho lah... goes anywhere...

Maybe just a little too tall for the smaller asian bikers.

$40K and it's yours.

Finally came out with a sport tourer that gives the Haya a run for their money.

The K1200S inline 4 engine... a move away from their usual Horizontally Oppose eng.

Similarly... the new naked K1200R is a Looker.. with 165hp. Wow!

BUYING A 2nd HAND BIKE

With the Spore Classification of Bikers' Licencing...

Eg. 2B, 2A & finally Class 2!

It does make much sense to buy a used bike.

Since most will be upgrading to a bigger bike.

Ask around... bikes seldom stay with their owners for more than 2 yrs.

A Used bike is not a new bike...

But u can get always get a good buy if u take your time to search around.

The Biggest Fear in a 2nd hand bike is one that gonna give u

Plenty of Trouble... ahem... with a Capital "T"

Below are some tips that may be helpful:

1. Don't be in a rush & u may not want to buy the 1st bike u see.

If u like the bike... let the seller know u will call him back soon.

U get a chance to consult your mech or buddy(have one that owns the same bike) of your find.

And most importantly... a 2nd thought!

2. Go look around the moto tiam... and the SBF classified always have plenty of bikes for sale .... everyday.

3. Don't view a bike in the night.

- u miss something that is important.

4. Ask the seller to bring the bike to your regular mechanic & let the mech access

the tech part of the bike.

5. Ask permission to take pictures of the bike.

Help u have a gd re-look at the bike later.

6. One of the worst case is a Bad Drop.

If a old bike has new parts... eg fairings... it's been replaced.

And a ride round the block will tell a lot.

That's if the shop or owner let u.

Normally if the see u are keen & responsible kind of person... they'll let u.

Small drops... should be ok if damage is just scratches on the paint work, exhaust. (the ZX12 titanium exhaust cost $1K)

Get some discount for the repair... so have your paint shop hp ready.

7. General Condition:

Brakes, cables, suspension, lites work, tires & chain...

Your mech does a better job at all this.

Remember... A messy electric system will cost u plenty in rewiring the whole sysm.

8. Run the engine. If it was warm before u came...

Chances it has problem starting in the cold.

A smooth engine is what u are looking for... rev it to see the fueling is ok.

9. Smoke from exhaust. Blue smoke is oil...

gasket worn & oil's leaking into combustion camber...

Gasket is not expensive... but labour will cost u more.

Whenever u are riding with a Group...

Be it on tracks, touring or just going places in Spore...

The tendency to keep pace can be extremely dangerous.

U may not be able to handle the same speed as the

One infront entering the same corner or bend.

His experience will bring him thru safely...

But u may just over run the bend & "Bite the Dust"

There maybe many reasons:

1. Skill Level - he was a moto gp racer

2. Experience - did moto-x & trailing

3. Bike Type - build to handle corners better

4. Tyres - very sticky tires

5. Gearing - He's in the right gear u are not.

Braking in a Corner:

U need to be smooth & gentle.

Remember... when u brake hard in a corner...

The bike wants to sit up.

That's when u gonna over run or hit the curb & u Flip!

Best approach is to stay within your limit & ability.

Do your braking before entering the corner.

Dropping one or two gears... will give u better control.

There will be many bikers over taking me in a corner...

It's fine with me...

I just make sure they over take me safely.

Preferably on the outside... so they don't bring me down if the drop!

Our Roads ain't for checking out our cornering skills to the max...

A high tendency after a day at the tracks.

Just look at the clearances below and compare to what u gonna

hit if u skid or flip... between the two pictures.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v484/2100spectrum/Street%20Smart/149m.jpg

U will notice how Moto GP riders walk away after a high

Speed crash.

The are well protected by what they wear...

If track riders do not hit anything or anything hit them... in a spill...

It will be just minor damages.

I have helped a bike who flip at "Turn One" pasir gudang tracks.

Going too fast after the straights,

He just could not negotiate the turn.

He flew into the grass with his bike...

But escape with minor abrasion,

a bruised pride & some damage to the bike.

It will definately be a different story if the same

were to happen on our roads.

He would either smash into the barriers, or flip into the cliff behind.

Bike & rider will be heading for their respective hospital....

I totally agree with the above post! Although I have not been to any tracks as of now. Always thought of going because I think it is good for building skill and confidence. (but also costly when comes to tyres, petrol, maintenace).

BTW those GP riders have the world's most expensive helmets, gloves, leather suits and other technologies developed by top engineers on their bikes to help them escape serious injuries or even death. But not for us.

Good point Spectrum!

But I am always thinking .. if I don't go to the tracks and I don't practise cornering on normal roads, how can I improve my riding skills?? I find that I am becoming more and more "kia see". Very safe and boring rides - go straight means go straight, turn means sit straight and turn gently. I am not making full use of my tyres and I am forgoing my skills day-by-day (just like the animals in the zoo, they lose their natural instincts as time goes by). Sure, we can sign up for defensive riding course but that is just a 1 day course.

Haha .... any comments on this? : )

About Helmets

It is Important that Helmets Fit Well!

No point having your face smashing the inside front of your helmet

falling face down cause the fit is loose

U generally have to pull the straps apart to lower wear a Full Face Helmet.

To ensure a correct fit.

I had certain regrets when I brought my A full face oversea...

And having the saleman insisting it should be a tight fit.

I now know the Wisdom in his words.

And now use the helmet with a assurance that

my face will be intact if I take a dive.

Be sure to replace worn cushion with new ones.

Less u loss a few teeth and fracture your face

Falling face down.

http://www.streetbikerider.com/i-products/arai-helmets-2006-astral-x-graphics-van-den-bosch.jpg

Open Face helmets are more comfortable riding in the city.

But seeing a biker with his jaw caved in does convince me to

Get use to wearing a Full Face all-the-time.

Haha .... any comments on this? : )

These are just my personal comments.

First, you have to decide what is your choice:

- Do you want to ride fun but short?

What I mean by this is: Use the road as a convenient race track.

Corner as low and as fast as (even hanging-off) you can at your favourite bends (is that what you mean by using your tyres more fully?).

Pull willies when there are opportunities. Get a thrill of showing other riders on the road that you can ride faster than them.

Motorcycles are small so they are meant to squeeze. No to squeeze and zip in traffic is being silly.

- Or do you want to rationalise and ration your fun but have a long long riding career?

What I mean by this : You don't mind other riders on the road overtake you. You don't mind missing traffic opportunities which means a slightly longer waiting and a little later in reaching your destination. So long as you reach your destination safely, you have accomplished your mission.

I'm not a believer of so-called "defensive riding" (try defining what it exactly means) courses, centered around slalom cones, simulated wet braking, racing tracks.

Regarding the "zoo" analogy, I have different take. If I am Rossi and I earn living in MotoGP, then the track is my "home ground". But if I am just using motorcylcing as a transport, then day-to-day road riding is my "home ground".

So the more I do day-to-day road riding, the more I am honing and practising my motorcycle roadcraft, the better I will get.

You think road riding is boring? There are ways to make it interesting. You think track riding is not boring? Try lapping the same track 30 times per track session just to practise being proficient at one particular corner. Then mulitply it by 100 sessions at the same track so you can then move to the other corners of the track. It's the same scene over and over again.

This is how I get my satisfaction from day-to-day roadriding:

1. I concentrate and focus on my ride.

This is an essential part to safety, but I found that it is also very therepeutic and relaxing at the end of the ride. The principles behind are similar to that of yoga, tai-chi, golf and other competitive sports.

2. I spot hazards and react ahead in time compared to other cars and bikes.

Eg: I spot a broken down vehicle on the lane that I am in, way in advanced maybe 200-300m or 6-10 cars ahead. None of the cars and bikes around me have switched lanes yet. I am the first to switch and only later, I noticed the others start to react.

This is an essential part of my Hazard-Oriented-Vision for road safety.

With the same skill, there were rides when I approached a corner with a fellow rider. I instintively dropped my speed significantly. The fellow rider figured it is safe to enter the corner at a higher speed than me. I was right.

3. Decline in close-encounters.

When I first started riding and practised my own safety riding techniques that are shared in this post, I do count the number of close-encounters, close-shaves or near-collisions that I have for each riding trip.

The average is 1-2 near mishaps per trip, 2-3 near mishaps per day, or about 5-10 near mishaps per week. Yes, it is that risky in Singapore to ride. Each trip could almost be my last.

After a few years of practising my own safety riding techniques. I noticed the numbers start to decline. When it dropped to around 1-2 near mishaps per week, or barely any mishaps per trip, I know I was doing something right. Unless you are saying that Singapore drivers have become more road-friendly to motorcylces that caused my numbers to decline.

Now I get the satisfaction from barely any close mishaps per month.

4. Go for touring trips up north.

Need not be multi-day types. Even a within-day trip lets me appreciate that I have picked up motorcyling.

Street Smart #124

Drop 1 or 2 gear before entering a bend

Depending on the severity of the curve.

It's a safer way then just using brakes.

:cheeky:

It gives better control

Lesser chance of over running the road

Watch this clip

Edited to add: I got it from this thread, so please don't create another one in Clips and Motions!
