I don't think it's a policy only within the Prisons Dept. I believe it's more of a Ministry level policy. Try applying for SPF, SCDF or CNB and chances are they'll still require you to pass your O-Level maths. The 5 O-Level passes include English and maths, so if you don't have these, you could possible retake your O's?

On the webby, the information is quite basic IMO. There is more stuff not mentioned, for example, BMI ratio, etc that you will need to be within the stipulated figures before they accept you in. When I first applied back in 2002 I was told to lose weight because my BMI was over the limit. Standard lah, this one. Which organisation wanna take in fatties or skinnies?

Thanks desewer. Quite unfortunate for my friend,i guess a wasted opportunity for him then.

Yeah, too bad. Should have tried harder during his O's. It's still not too late. If he is really intent on getting better jobs in future he should endeavour to improve on his 'O' results.

THREE prison inmates have been convicted by the High Court of physically and sexually abusing their former cellmate, at the end of a 12-day trial on Thursday.

Sentencing is adjourned to Monday but Iryan Abdul Karim, 21, Muhammad Hamdan Abdul Rahman, 20, and Mohammed Zameen Abdul Manoff, 22, will be spending a much longer time in jail than what they were originally in for.

Deputy Public Prosecutor S. Sellakumaran pressed for a deterrent sentence of at least 20 years' jail and caning in what he described as 'one of the worst cases of physical abuse in recent years'.

The trio were accused of torturing their 22-year-old ex-cellmate and forcing him to perform oral sex on them between April 27 and May 4 last year in their Changi Prison cell.

The prisoners, who conducted their own defence, admitted beating him up but said the sex acts were consensual as he had offered to perform them without them asking for it.

However, Justice Tay Yong Kwang rejected their defence, saying that when one is forced to consent, that is not recognised in law as consent.

However, Justice Tay did acquit Iryan of one of the three oral sex charges, saying he would give him the benefit of doubt.

Iryan has maintained that the victim performed oral sex on him on only two occasions.

TWO prison inmates who beat up a former cellmate and made him perform oral sex on them were on Monday jailed for 16 years and ordered to be caned 16 strokes of the cane.

A third, found guilty of similar charges plus an additional charge of sodomy, was jailed 19 years and ordered to be caned 22 strokes.

The trio - Iryan Abdul Karim, 21; Muhammad Hamdan Abdul Rahman, 20; Mohammed Zameen Abdul Manoff, 22 - were convicted last week of assaulting their former cellmate in their Changi Prison cell between April 27 and May 4 last year.

The 22-year-old victim suffered multiple rib fractures and was hospitalised for two months.

'The atrocities committed by them in cell 5-55 speak for themselves,' said Justice Tay Yong Kwang in handing down sentence on Monday, describing their assaults as 'both crude and cruel'.

'Their actions were inhumane and repulsive. It is shocking that they allowed themselves to be carried away by their numerical and physical superiority to the extent of bullying a fellow inmate using such sadistic and degrading acts.'

Although prosecutors had pressed for at least 20 years and 24 strokes of the cane, Justice Tay said he had not gone so far, as he believed the sentences were sufficient enough to punish the trio and make an 'indelible mark on their consciousness on the need never to stray into violence or any other crime again'.

Justice Tay also spent time commenting on how the trio, who defended themselves during the trial, were highly intelligent young men whose lives could have been a lot different.

The judge said that he observed over the past few weeks that they were able to grasp legal concepts and court procedures once these were explained to them.

He left them with the closing words: 'Please put these talents of yours to good use, discipline your minds and study something that interests you. I know you all can study because I have seen the way you memorise the contents of the documents... you can overcome.'

The victim, who was in court, told reporters that justice had been served. 'I can forgive them but I can never forget the incident.'

no point lah. each inst have their own grp of staff who ride. last time (before cluster) there was a grp of staff who used to travel up and down m'sia... from 125's to 1500's all kinds of bikes e.g. dukes, hondas, yammies, etc.

now, it wld be hard to find time to ride around together. cos mainly the staff like to fraternise within their own inst only. but its still worth a try, just need someone to organise. hehehe
