Buying a 2nd hand IU, regardless registering or not, is not an offence. It only becomes an offence if you are caught using it for unlawful activities. Unless you have prior knowledge that the IU is a loot.

Buying 2nd hand IU is not safe especially when the source of s**ply is questionable.

Perhaps I can explain my experience and the process of buying an IU.

Few years back I bought a new IU for an existing bike from Mah Pte Ltd. I need to produce my Log card, and NRIC. They made a copy of the documents, and they peeled off a bar-code sticker (there are two such stickers on the IU), from the IU, and pasted it on my Log Card. I declined their installation offer, and they gave me a warning, "don't anyhow use hor". Total cost, $157.50 (with 5% GST)

I believe the log card with the bar-code sticker will be submitted to LTA for **dating. Now that LTA has implemented the virtual log card, there could be some changes to this process.

i juz called LTA and from wat i heard frm the LTA.. the 2nd hand IU tat u r buyin muz comes from a de-registered bike.. u cant register the 2nd IU to ur bike if its prev bike has not been de-registered... about the legality issues they cant confirm with me.. she say is illegal but if wan to confirm muz ask the officer who in charge of IU..
