Recently, I took my 3 years old bike which is in mint condition for a new paint at auto niche. My bike is black color which I don't like, so I want to re spray it to white. However, after I got it back, I found that the fuel tank is rusty inside.

I never encounter this with my cbr400 last time.

I asked the shop, he says that fuel tank turn rusty is unavoidable during paint job.

Is it true? If it's true, how come the 1996 cbr400 I had last time still shines inside the fuel tank?

What's disappointing is that, I paid $850 for a single color and the paint job they gave is kinda sloppy. The screws area paint is very thin, can see a bit black color inside the white paint. =/

I have no sense of direction, am a slow rider and always lost. >.<"

Okay, he also know that I'm not very happy with the paint job, had help me to touch up a bit, compensate me with their stickers.

I think they are very good in grooming and stickers. About the paint job....I feel overcharged for that quality.

I'll still visit the shop for stickers in future but I wouldn't recommend my friends if they are looking for a shop for re-spray. :slapforehead:

LOL this is the first time that I have ever that paint can cause metal to form rusts, I have heard paint to cover up rust, certain sprays to remove rust (like WD40 etc) but a first time to hear that paint can cause rust to form, that is a new one for me, imagine you spray it all over the car.

Just curious, is it a light brown coating of rust? Or thick built up layer?

What I suspect may be that during the prep stage, the tank might have been dipped in some kind of solvent / surface prep to remove all traces of oil/dirt prior to application of primer/paint. If that was the case, it may have stripped / removed any traces of anti-corrosion plating, if it had any originally. In that case, rust would start to form on the unsealed surface.

Or it could be that during painting, the drain tube inlet, sitting in the rim surrounding the fuel fill cap may have become clogged by paint. Either that or the outlet port at the bottom of the tank may have been blocked off by paint as well. If that tube is obstructed, rainwater/excess petrol will not be able to drain and will pool around the fuel fill opening. Given time, it may seep into the tank and cause it to rust.

I have seen an instance where a fellow GSR rider had bought a bike which had that drain inlet welded shut. This lead to rainwater ingress as it slowly seeped past the rubber gasket surrounding the fill hole. Use a pipette or some other squirt bottle to drop a few drops into that drain hole, it should drip out the bottom of your bike via one of 2/3 rubber tubes.

It's a possibility on what you mentioned. But if that's the case it also proves the shop really suxs and didn't do a proper job.

But knowing how most spray paint shop does their work, it is very unlikely they will strip the old paint. Most likely only a sand down and plaster.

If that is the case then it will be more logical, but I thought rust takes time to form and I think anodize case is almost in a short period of time (I might be wrong) and based on what anodize was told by the shop "I asked the shop, he says that fuel tank turn rusty is unavoidable during paint job." kind of mislead people into thinking that it is normal for rust to form on the spot as a result of the shop spraying the bike....-_-|||

Cause I want very good quality one. DIY one won't look that shiny even after waxing and polishing? I think. >.

Erm, it's as the title says, the shop is auto niche. It's a sticker shop actually. >.

Erm, it's a brown coating of rust, flat surface, haven't turn into those rough ones yet.

He says that because the internal of the tank is dry and without petrol for many days, it'll start to rust.

Sounds pretty much like that. Some tanks have no anti-corrosion plating. If you dry it out, surface rust will start to form. Unfortunate that they had to have it dry for so many days. Could be a case whereby the paint job was subbed out to another shop. So takes a few days to send here, wait there, before painting and bringing it back to reinstall on your bike.
