Hi Seniors,

Finally got my Class 2B license.

Facing a dilemma on choosing the bike.

Please bare with me a bit okie ; p

Ok.. heres the story line.

I have plan to get 2A and 2 license.

I personally drive, bike will be my secondary transport to work (and when my wife needs the car to ferry the kids)

The kind of bike i like is more like Street / Sports bike type. I prefer those slightly bigger in size so that its more visible to cars. (really, sometimes when you check wing mirror then blind spot, you really can't see the smaller bike, those bike like RC200, Duke 200, Super 4 kind of size more visible to car user (my personal view)).

My Original objective is to get a 2nd hand 2B bike, like Ninja KKR ZX150 / Yamaha FZ16ST / YZF R15 / Honda CBR 150 R / NSR 150 SP/RR / GLS200 Tiger.

Reason for choosing the above models are because they are available in SGBIKEMART.. and they looks reasonable big and nicer looking lar. (Look factor is a bit impt also lar). But something that worries me is if any of such bike are illegally modified. How to checks... Bike I super nob, so worry as well.....

I thinking of after getting 2A then change to bike like Super 4 that kind of size. (cause tyre also wider.)

But after hearing the lady who pass during the same TP date as mine, she ordered a Duke 200. I saw her at the bike shop and have a chat.. Saw the bike. feel it, looks big (really like those 2A bike. ) Then I check out KTM, found that they have RC200 as well. Also looks big.... mmmmmm

Now I'm contemplating if I should get these kind of 200 CC bike... which looks big. And I can ride them long term.... at least till I get my Class 2 then consider changing bike...

Seriously when I try to search, not easy... too many options and choice. . and also don't know if SG have or not. Unlike choosing cars (criteria easier, 7 seater, made in Jap, within budget... only few models to short list. . Then go check out ) But for bike, just 200 CC alone got soooo many, then see liao also blur... and not like cars, only few main dealer carry.. .so also easier to go look c look c the car.....

And when I check out the price : http://www.ktm.com.sg/index.php

Model cc Year With ARF & GST

200 Duke non ABS 200cc 2014 $9,900

RC 200 200cc 2015 $10,900

But the price very much different from street ley... The DUKE 200 that the lady bought is $19K.. The one from the ktm.com.sg only $9,900... what am I missing out ?

When I check out SG BIKE MART : http://************************/newbikes/listing/?brand=16

The DUKE 200 price POA - $9,700....

I lagi confuse liao....

Can any expert and senior out there help to enlighten me a bit ? thanks

$10,000 + $5,000 (COE) + $1,000 (Insurance) = $16,0000

$16,000, 4 years loan @ 4% per year = $19,200 / 48 months = $400 per month

So, yes it is possible. However, say $16,000 down the road when you got Class 2. it can get you many different kind of bikes, some used some new.

If you can afford whichever bike you are looking at comfortably; go for it.

Regards,

kifakw

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car

and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.

Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall,

torque is how far you take the wall with you.

If you are looking for a "temporary" bike, can consider the fz16 or even the cbf150. Don't spent too much on this bike since you are going to upgrade after one year.

I was in the same boat as u a few years back... I got a TA200 (phantom) then a super 4 now.

The phantom is a simple to maintain bike. The riding posture is more relax... Which made my learning of the 2a s4 a little harder that time... Or so I think... But it was a good ride. Cheap to buy and maintain. Very resellable also.

Newbies will dropped their first bike, and usually more than once. Getting a brand new 2B bike is a big waste of money if you are intending to upgrade, so I suggest you go search the market for a 2nd hand bike. Go find from open market - may get tired from running around, but thats when you start learning a lot from various owners. Used bikes show you the realistic state of a bike after a while. Shops I avoid cos they only tells me the good thing and not the problem.

I don't really like Duke cos it's made in India.

When you go for bigger cc bikes, I usually get one bcos I can pull off from cars faster, especially at red light junction. Useful when you are avoiding an accident.

Agreed with kaiq on the rationale of NOT getting a brand new 2B bike. With your intentions to upgrade, its much better to invest on a bigger cc bike.

Try searching the forum here under garage sales.

Just be weary of everyone capitalizing on the current high COE prices.

Even big bikes sold here are very expensive.

Can't blame those that make a lot of money that they can afford expensive bikes. They contribute to the economy. Imagine all rich people refuse to spend. Hm...

No point to get a new 2B bike, unless of course money is no object - then go ahead. The KTM Duke 200 is a great starter bike if you are not too tall for it, the ABS option can save your inexperienced newbie ass. If you are too big for it - get a Varadero 125. The KTM RC is a good option as well, it depends on what your riding style and target bike is. If you see yourself riding a class 2 sports bike in the future - get the RC. Otherwise stick to the Duke.

Generally, class 2A bikes are also a waste of money if you are planning to upgrade to class 2. Just get a decent class 2B bike and keep it for 2 years, then upgrade to class 2.

this is provided the passion for riding is very strong.

Getting from Class 2B to 2 within 3 yrs is fast, which essentially means right from the very beginning, the final target is Class 2.

I generally see many riders stopped at Class 2A, after which the wife will say they preferred to be in a car. :)

yeah... took me way past 5 years to sign up for 2A, and a few renewals just to complete that 3 lessons! but buying 2A bikes abit wasted if u're not into the super 4 n the likes.. so for me, 2A to 2 will be faster. car is for family transport.. bike is for self..

I think our motorcycle license system needs a reform! Don't you think? It is made to really deter people from owning a big bike.

Personally i thought its just to make the riders more aware that riding a bigger cc bike needs more responsibility... thus the different grades.

However, i thought the 2A and 2 not much difference.... except the plank and bumpy course...

But the entire process from registration day to owning 2B is like 6-9 months. That is just ridiculous. Rather than having so many different sessions, causing everyone inconvenience that we have to go back to the driving center so many times and each lesson just takes 90 minutes, why not several days of perhaps 5-8 hours lessons for the entire course? I personally feel that it is really made like that to deter people from even considering riding a motorcycle.
