hi guys, my bike had been giving me this problem ever since a minor accident I had.

I'm riding a spec 3, there's this light indicator btm left of the Neutral indicator, always light up when I'm riding for more den 15 mins and my bike is like really hot(at the engine part). And the coolant just use up like no tml, even face it boiling like hot water.

Tried couple of fixing, change the radiator switch thingy, even changed the fan blade which burned before, but the problem kept coming back later in a few months time.

Has anyone experience it before ? Please help me been throwing alot of time and money in it.

Thanks man.

Brader, im facing the same problem with u. Riding s4 spec 3. its a 2 year old bike. But my problem came up during tis year june but i got no accident. Riding for 15 min n the red light up. Mine when reach to a complete stop, set it to neutral, open throttle till 2k rpm and it activate the overheat light. When it happen, i diy flush out my previous coolant and top up with shell ready to use. But my coolant never dry up when the problem occurred. Went to hkl to rectified the problem, but the mechanic says it normal. How can it be? Any 1 out the can help to solve this problem?

Could it be the water pump? Wen the pump is not functioning well, the coolant line flow won't have a proper circulation. Perhaps wanna go Honda agent and find out what went wrong? I rode a scoot before and i had a similar prob last time. My mechanic told me it's either the water pump, coolant line got choke, or it could be u're heat sensor props. The sensor to indicate u're bike is overheating. Jus my encounter bro....

I dunno about S4 but your bike got cooling fan or not? If got cooling fan then everytime your bike indicate over heat see your cooling fan running or not...If it is not running then it is the problem with the fan but if no cooling fan then I dunno liao...

check if ur fan is working.. if it is, then ur thermostat valve is spoilt. it's like a door, when the coolant is hot, it push this door to circulate. it's common fault cos our weather is too hot.

i got this problem when i'm my way back to s'pore from ayer keroh. i told my mechanic and he took out the valve. so, ur coolant circulate freely without the door. simple job cost abt $20

hmm some of my frens suspect is coolant valve choke or air bubble also cos of the impact of my accident.

Went to motorworld couple of time but they cant rect the real problem. Had quite a similar problem as tom_fiz rpm up to 2 the light will light up at idling.

Though motorworld suggest putting a switch to on the radiator fan manually whenever I want. It does not stop the light from indicating but it does delay it.

Thanks for the reply man, appreciate that think I will ask the bike shop bout the thermostat valve.

its located at ubi the stretch opposite the traffic police hq. dont go there with illegal visor/exhaust. u dont want to be the first prey of the dozens of tp officers out to catch ppl.

i had similar issue with my ver S. will overheat after flush coolant within 3-6months.

went K&T couple of times already.

replaced radiator cap, replaced water pump, replaced thermostat of the radiator fan on separate incidents of few months in-between. (total around SGD 250 for this un-resolved incident)

until few days ago overheat again, i fed up, waste too much time and money already. so i just top up the coolant myself after seeing how they do it so many times already. if i have to top up the coolant every 3-4 months myself, that's ok with me. it's cheaper than paying for parts which may not fix the issue.

haha well seekie I understand how you feel, went over to alot bike shop for this overheat problem all they change is those common things but the problem just keep coming a few weeks later. I think 3-4 months is ok since all you need is top up coolant guess it sorta used up, sometimes i top up full coolant few days later it just evaporated, god damn. My ver S fren told me they never had problem with overheating though.

Wah opp police hq there ah I just went there few days ago to replace license >

Hmm what i see the mech replace almost everything in the cooling system, but does he forget to check the coolant passage in the engine?.Especially the cylinder block area.

hmm I heard from people it's possible that there are air bubbles trap at the passage in the engine there, but sounds like a big project to verify leh so i didnt dare ask the mech.

I too have this right side hotter than left side thing...But its normal coz my bike is juz half a year old and on the first day i ride it,its been like that. What temperature for the LED to light up,i'm not sure. Some time coolant pressure also plays a part.If the water pump cannot supply the correct pressure to push the coolant around the cooling jackets around the cylinder head and cylinder block then overheating will rise.

As for the crankshaft,con-rod,piston pin and etc losses heat thru the engine oil. Purpose of the engine oil is to lubricate, cool and clean those parts.

mmm.. i checked the left side, it holds electrical fuses and some electrical stuff. that will get hot too? so it quite normal for s4 to get so hot and light still not up yet (means fan still not on)? Does using better eo lower engine temperature? i heard that if the reserve coolant tank boils means not enough pressure from the radiator cap. i always go over to malaysia thats y its a concern. don want to be stuck there =)

It will get hot due to air flowing from the radiator and cooling fins on the engine. Its normal. For the right side will be slightly hotter as it houses your coolant reservoir(coolant expansion tank).

Using better engine oil does really helps to lower engine temperature, but finding the suitable brand and viscosity is not easy.

Boiling coolant can also be a radiator cap no having the correct pressure.Make sure you get the correct pressure radiator cap.Radiator cap got different pressure rating.

now i dont dare to ride it

according to wat i know. if the coolant is not circulating well, the coolant sensor will sense high heat due to coolant not circulating. u can say its stagnant there. even though the cooling fan cut in, it only cool the coolant in the radiator n not the coolant that is in the engine parts.

for coolant not circulating, it could b due to a defective coolant pump or air lock in the cooling system. meaning, coolant not bleed properly when changed. thermostat is a part which expands n allows coolant to circulate thru the radiator. reason being engine needs to run at its operating temperature. so the temperature cannot b too hot or too cold. must b according to the specs.

hope this little bit can address to some of the riders out there who had this cooling system problem.

I forgot to mention one more thing.A layer of sediments inside the cooling jackets that prevents the full heat transfer from the engine to the coolant. This can also be overheating problem.
