u r tokin abt the packin in aftermarket exhausts right.. well.. when the packin gets cooked it is unable to contain the exhaust noise so logically speakin it shld be louder.. by then u shld replace the packin wif a new one..

SCOTTS (by ohlins) works great.

1. Separate independant valving (high & low speed circuit). Hence able to "sift" out high velocity handlebars shakes (tank-slapper initiators) from low velocity handlebar turns (u-turns etc). This feature greatly benefits slow handle bar velocity movements.

2. Sweep adjustments.

3. Can be self serviced with simple tools. (reduces maintainence costs)

Back track the threads, there are very detailed explainations of the SCOTTS damper. The tricky part is to get the high & low speeds tuned so they do not "over-lap" each other

Thank You.

generally there r 2 types of steering damper available on the market now.. rotary and piston type.. both have the same basic function.. and tat is to calm the handlin of the bike..

personally i like the scotts one.. becos it looks damn chio (i'm a sucker for good looks :D) and it has a seperate high n slow speed knob.. the onli drawback is i have to drill the frame to attach the bracket and i'm kinda worried tat something might go wrong (murphy's law)..

to me.. the onli reason y i'm gettin a steerin damper is becos i'm scared of tankslappers.. experienced one when i was pushin 249km/h b4.. other then tat i cant see y a steering damper is needed at all.. i doubt there'll be a tankslapper durin normal relaxed ridin.. and at the track a damper wld prob slow down handlin..

Ya... got tankslapped at 240+ too... since then balls dropped dun dare to go above 250 already... lol... ya think scotts is good too due to the high/low speed settings... u know where to get that and how much does it roughly cost?

I have retrieved the damper discussion in our R6 forum sometime back August.

http://www.singaporebikes.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2970867#post2970867

Details are as below

Hi guys need some answers to my noob questions if do not mind, does R6 comes with any damper? and wher you guys place the IU unit?

No. none of the R6 from Y2K to '07 comes with a damper. There are a wide variety of dampers available to fit her up....especially the '06 and up model which aparently is pin point agile but not very stable at high speeds of 220kmh and above.

ohlins

I got no pic... ask R46.. he has on his R6!! :cheeky:

Apparently think Ohlins have a fork mount type similar to the R1's OEM damper mounting. But the brackets cost alot!

Thank You.

do you guys think new r6 06-07 are design to tank slap ?? im mean i can already count the number of tankslapper club here. ask on the offical r6 forum too but they reckon its becos rider pull on the bars. what do you guys think ? beside road condition, weight plays a part too ? i have a feeling those who encounter TS weight around 55-65kg range ? lets share. hehe

Yes you are right, only those who are light weight get tank slappers on straights. I'm 72kg and i hit 270+ on NS highway no prob. Guess you gotta eat more. :thumb:

i resolved mine with suspension adjustments.

i guess weight plays a part.. but i believe its more due to overly stiff suspension setup and the fickle nature of the r6's handlin.. i rode a gsxr750 k6 b4 and it felt much more calm n stable at high speed..

It might be.. But from the direction that most of the 2 wheel sportbikes take (infact 4 wheelers too), they are focusing greater on agility, quick handling, pin-point & sharp user input on the bars. They greatly translate to a more susceptable tankslap (of course other factors are also the culprit) as inevitably, the rake changes (which decreases your trail) will have to be looked into.

Tank slap is due to one or a multiple or all of the possible combination of reasons. Some common ones to highlight :-

1. Tires

2. Rake angle & trail (these indirectly translates to bike handling. Quick handling is a desire on the track. But too quick, it then gets "nervous" at high speeds way above track speeds. Coupled with irregularities of road conditions, it again subjects you to slaps on the NS)

3. Tire's contact patch on accel/del (which is subjective to individual rider's type of riding style.

4. Road conditions

5. Suspension setup. (compression & rebound characteristics)

6. Suspension setup (pre-load) -- >Do you know preload does effect the rake & trail too? Yes it does! :thumb:

7. Bike geometric setup. Take the stock 03~05 R6 & the 06~07 R6 for a ride, best at quick twisties. You will definitely notice something different --> agility . It was designed & geared towards for track use (you don't get the bumps like road racing or harsh b-roads or irregularities on NS).

8. Speed approach of bumps and velocity of stanchion movements (not speed of bike).

9. Rider's weight and physique.

It goes on.... A damper does not solve everything by just mounting it there. Work on areas where you can with the stock bike. Like what Amba did good, the least $$ spent with good result from proper suspension setup. :thumb:

Of course nothing is ultimate, that is where compromise comes in. A good track setting will definitely induce a higher chance of "sudden surprise" slaps on the NS, which is most riders here experience. I got a good deal of bounce with harshness on to mersing with track settings. The comp & rebound settings for track n SG roads ain't no suitable for good mersing rides. With a spring rate much harder amongst most 600cc machines, thats where suspension tuning plays an important part. :cheeky:

Thank You.
