hey guys, read dat u all had a spraying session. hope it turned out great. i have a few questions though.

1) if we DIY spray at night, the bike wont shine right? cos we'd need the sun's heat to to make it shine. unless u all oven bake it at home lah.

2) after sanding down the parts eg. the tank, do i have to spray the primer/undercoat before i spray the actual color? cos its mostly metal and i'm worrying about rust.

3) how many cans does it take to spray the whole bike?

Cheers

*i want to DIY spray my K also. currently a mix of aluminium front fender, black tank, silver side covers and black rear fender. not really a nice sight to see. haha

Just respray my bike last nite n still in need of a few items for the bike to be complete. The cafe seat will only be ready next week. So watch out for it. Pics will be post.

Abt the 'Spray job'. Do not spray at direct sunlight(hot), it better to spray at nite(cool) cos u need the paint to dry evenly before u apply another coat. Abt the 'make it shiny or glossy' thingy is all abt exprience n techique of spraying. Yes, u must sand the desired part u need to spray until smooth so tat the paint 'bites' or stick to the surface. The primer thingy, for me is optional but u need to spray a thin base coat(white) so as to guide u which part is not covered while spraying. Be patient when spraying, apply several thin coats is better than a few thick coats.

I beg to differ... I think it's better to spray in the day when it's hot rather than when it's cold at night.

It's easier to see in the day, and the heat will make your paint coats dry a little faster.

At night, when you're leaving your paint to dry in between coats, the water vapor and condensation of the air might affect the quality of your coats. Even if its not raining or anything, just the cool of the night can leave water droplets on ur coats and it might not turn out just as nice.

Just my 2 cents worth. Correct me if i'm wrong.

you may be right in saying that the heat might make it dry faster, but that doesnt necessarily make it better. As u see, during the night when it is slightly cold, pressure of spraycan is low and thus paint will be easier to control. Paint distributed evenly.

also, the cool of the night make sure the paint doesnt crack when the first few layers are done. If it is too hot and the paint cracks as u add another layer, the other layers would possibly flake and in the end come off. Also, if too hot, paint might not 'bite' as when u spray it already dries and isnt given time to sink in.

it depends on how fast u want it done, but that affects quality.

wanna do it fast, u need to dry fast, do in day.

doesnt mean quality is better.

These things u shudnt rush, thats what Bear means.

Day painting is better. The paint vents faster and so dries faster. Colder temp does not make paint more even, infact higher pressure is better.

Why professional painter needs oven? Dunno dun mislead.

Throw in free advice. Those cans of spray which are low on pressure when close to finishing, put them in warm water to bring up the pressure. Higher pressure means the mist is finer.

Professional painter need oven to do a very gd job to 'carrot' idiots.

DIY spray painting does'nt 'carrot' but still achieve the desired objective.

well my point wasnt about it drying faster.. i never said speed was essential in any spray job.

my point was that at night, things get wet, and that doesnt always result in perfect painting.

and when i mean spray in the day, i dont mean like noon or something. my opinion on what would be a good time would be 7? onwards.. where its only starting to get hot.

u can do a good job spray painting at night, i dont believe u can't. and i trust bear when he says he's done a few good paint jobs. but all im saying is that, i think its better in the day.

to each his own.

Pls do not argue abt spraying in the day or in the nite. I only quote "Do not spray at direct sunlight(hot)'. I did not say abt 'day painting' or 'nite painting', actually make no difference, if u r good at spraying, meaning, u are good. Just need the time to practice n u r good to go independent, i only give u ppl the guideline on the 'how to'.

We/i, will try our best to give advice and alternative solutions to suit yr needs n not to CRITIC! The juniors here also please do yr part by finding out things yrself first or maybe ATTENDENT A MEET-UP to Answer yr Doubts. Please dun expect to be spoon-fed. If u paiseh to meet the others, u can always meet me.

Bear, i need your opinion whether is it advisable to change/convert the front disc brake to drum brakes.

It's time for me to fix my brakes and this matter suddenly crosses my mind just to achieve the classic look.
