Hi all..I've just pass my tp test 2 days ago and now contemplating on which bike to buy.

I've came across the daystar 125 and quite like it..the design of the bike is excactly what i had i mind during my learning days at the driving centre..in short it's my dream bike.

My question is how much would it cost for a 1st hand or 2nd hand one?

What are the bikes pros and cons?

For your info i'm just 19 yrs old..and i really need all of your help as i had work hard for the past year in order to save for a bike.Furthermore..none of my close relatives ride..my friends do not know anything as most of them is either the same age as me or does not have a bike,so none can help me with the procedures of buying a bike. Therefore i'm appealing for all of your help in this issue, like what should take note off when buyng this bike, etc, any advice or pointers will be deeply appreaciated. i want to gain a bit of knowledge first so as to not get cheated by the bike shops when i'm there.

Thanks in advance.

nage,

Congrats on passing your coveted TP test, and welcome to the Fellowship of the Ride :D. I've been in your shoes b4, and know just how u feel.

Welcome also to our humble forum. Though i've not owned a daystar b4, i have no doubt that u'll get lots of helpful advice here.

Do come down to meet up with as well if u feel inclined. We meet up on Friday nights from 8.30pm onwards.

Answers to your qn

1. Prices

2nd hand: $700 to just under $2k.

1st hand: No idea, but the new Daystars have an engine capacity of 150cc. Might be the only option if you want something larger than 125cc

3. Pros & Cons:

I believe there's a thread on the daystar in this forum. Have a look at it. Search "daystar" and you will find it.

Thank u jockster and ultimax for your replies.

Ultimax..is 700-2000 the machine price only?

Can u give me a rough estimate on how much the cost is for OTR considering my age and p-plate status so i will have an idea when i go the shop..the shop i'm going to is cka at kaki bukit.

I have a few questions,

Does the plate status like fx or fu affect their 2nd hand price? How would i know what year is the plate?

Can i request to test ride the bike?

How much should i pay for the downpayment?

How much interest should i pay if i pay by installment?

Pardon my ignorance..as i only have myself to depend on so i need to know as much as i can. Thank u all.

Posted

well.. think price ultimax quoted should be without insurance and transfer fee. OTR price juz add another 400-500 for 3rd party fire and theft insurance. (should be ard there if i'm not wrong) call up insurance companies to check for actual quotation.

and yes..FX and FU makes a diff. bacically determines age of bike. FX being newer(ard 2 yrs). so natrually..price for FX will be more expensive. well..if u wanna know the year the bike produced, check with shop and owner. roughly ard 8-9 mths for each cycle. so taking current plate, FZ, and start counting down.

downpayment depends on individuals, but generally, if u can afford to pay more deposit. do so, cos it will mean less interest to pay.

interest rates depends on bike shop/loan company's policy. so it varies, do ask for a black and white quote to prevent any frauds.

testing bike's really up to bike shop. and pte seller but do note tt it will risk ur licence and owner's if caught.

Hi nage,

Rae has already provided good answers so I don't need to say much more :)

>Ultimax..is 700-2000 the machine price only?

Yeah machine price only. Other costs:

Insurance: 3rd party, should be about $300-370 for a P-plater, 19 year old. Might be more though. Get a quotation from NTUC Income: https://incnet.income.com.sg/Motor/uiMotorCycleQuotForm.aspx

Road tax: $40 for 6 mths

Annual Inspection (you may not have to do this, depends on each bike, and when you buy it): $16

Transfer fee: Use this form to check: https://www.psi.gov.sg/NASApp/tmf/TMFServle...-ETF&isNew=True Should be about $50. Possibly less.

>Does the plate status like fx or fu affect their 2nd hand price?

Yeah it does. Generally,

FQ - 1998

FR - 1999

FS - 2000

FT - 2001

FU - 2002

FV - 2002/2003

FW - 2003

FX - 2004

FY - 2005

FZ - 2005

>Can i request to test ride the bike?

Pte seller, confirm can. Shop, am not sure

>How much should i pay for the downpayment? How much interest should i pay if i pay by installment?

Have never bough from a shop before. But interest generally won;t be low. THe longer the repayment duration, the higher it'll be, I think. Downpayment can be as low as $300, but the less you come up with initially, the more you will have to pay later on.

hi there congrats on passing your tp. i decide to reply coz 2 of my friends own dealim bike. one is a daystar125 and another one is a magma125. and also i myself was aiming for that bike when i passed my tp in august but i ended up buying a more expensive honda shadow vt125.

daystar (fs plate)= 4000+ (plus insurance and transfer) downpayment is 800.

magma (fr plate)= 2000+ (plus insurance and transfer) downpayment is also 800.

although it may seem that the price is abit steep but then my friends liked it becoz they re-conditioned the bike to almost brand new. performance wise, both bike max speed is about 110.

daystar comes with footrest. for me i cant really get used to it.

magma no complain except that the double exhuast is abit 'in the way' if u want to put side box or bag.

my friends' daystar vibrates alot when compare to the magma... might be just his bike...i dunno.

but if u are really serious about buying a dealim...please go look for choong kok agency as they are the distributors and seriously they have one of the best after sales services.

very friendly people. even i go there to service my bike although i didn't buy from them.

both of my friends and i dealed with the jurong east branch. so i can't say much about other branches. but they are famous for being nice and friendly (i dunno why)

so it shouldn't be a problem if u deal with them.

also if u are on a budget, dun buy those 'nice looking' bike that they display... instead just choose a accident free bike and ask them to re-condition it for u.

insurance should be quite expensive for u say about 750+ at least for second party (they say have to be second party if u pay by instalment) so try to at least cover ur insurance with ur downpayment. if really no money then ask them if can let u pay less for downpayment.

my advise is, get a cheap magma... get used to riding a cruiser bike first. when i first got my bike, i couldn't get used to the riding posture and i skidded while turning at low speed. haha... lucky only mirror crack. hai~ maybe unlucky for 7 years.

dun worry.. the bike shop will settle everything for u.

good luck on ur purchase~!

here's their website for ur references

http://www.cka.com.sg/

oh...before i forget...dealim bike have very good fuel comsumption....that means u save on petrol alot... with recent petrol prices... better get more mileage per litre.

hehe

Hi all..thank u for all the replies..the info have been really helpful to me.

Coincidently,my friend who lives just opposite cka kaki bukit had secretly taken the iniative to ask for a quotation on the daystar yesterday. He just told me just now.

As my friend is also a non rider, he just tell the basics like age,p-plate status to the salesperson.

This is what the salesperson quotation is:

Daystar 125

FS Plate

Downpayment of 1k

$131x36mths

What do all of u think?

I guess the main issue is this:

How much can you afford to pay right now? Can you pay the full amount upfront, or will you have to pay by installment.

I can only pay by installment...and considering my budget..the most i can downpay is 1k-1.2k.

ah ok..i think $4K + for a Daystar is way too ex. I do not doubt that the bike would have be completely refurnished by CKA, but that's just too much money for a 2nd hand FS plate bike.

Rae07 was telling me he saw a FT plate Daystar in a shop for $1.8?

Posted

I can only comment that no doubt the bike in Choongkok would be like new as parts that are worn out will be change as it is part of their service for the sale of 2nd hand bike.

As far as I have experience, all other shops would not be as taken care of 2nd hand bike in term of changing of worn out parts and cleaning of the bike as partly original parts is only obtainable at Choongkok and not worth the effect and money to do up the bike and sell it off at low price.

Thus, it bottle down whether you want to have a safe assured mind or taking the risk to buy the bike from another non-dealer shop and prepare to set a side a sum of money in case of any worn out parts.

Who knows that it might ended up cheaper or spending more in the short run.

4k plus for fs is abit ex but it could be his insurances as well coz if u take a loan it muz b 2nd party or better..

for 19yr old 2nd party its pretty costly for ntuc..

an alternative is mitsui... :thumb:

yo bro...look i've named myself after ur bike! haha...

here's another Daystar fan.... ;)

i haven't passed my TP yet..but I've already bought my Daystar (at quite a random shop, which just happened to have a Daystar coz the shop owner's friend went overseas 'n left it with him to sell). :cheeky:

i haven't really riden the bike yet..still waiting for my license...but i did have a very short test ride in the alley next to the shop...man that bike's BIG! really need to spend some time getting used to handling it!

i got mine for abt 2k bro...its an FR but ridden only for 9k km!!! :) oh..'n 2k OTR...my insurance is abt 300 (22 yrs) + i got my exhaust replaced...coz the original one on the bike was way too loud..'n i wanted a softer one.

but before i bumped into this deal..i was actually frequenting the CKA at alexandra.

'n what's said here is really true..the bikes they have at CKA are done up REAL REAL good....u can't even tell they are 2nd hand....esp after all the new polishing and paint jobs they adorn them with! ;)

but ofcoz..it comes at a price...a big one at that! an FR at CKA would cost a minimum of 3.8 k ...(machine price).

bottom line..if i could afford it...i'd certainly get a bike from CKA...esp coz i think their service is real good..'n this forum testifies that!

Frankly ...if i hadn't hit on this deal..i'd probably end up buying a Phantom...though i'd certainly not be very pleased (no offence to phantom brothers), simply coz Daystar's been my dream bike ever since i first came across the bike at CKA.

its always ur call...don't get pressurized by any sales men..or anything..just take ur time..do ur research 'n hopefully u can get a great deal real soon!!!

Good Luck bro!!!

i cant comment on Choongkok as i have not been there before...

But from experience, in helping friends in purchasing bikes and purchasing my own bikes, the one most important thing i've learnt,

'There's always more than meets the eye, or ear.'

A bike may look good and even sound good, but you'll never know until you've ridden it a while. A short ride round the carpark or estate (i doubt they will let you) can tell minor things like, steering bearings are off, handle bar is gone, engine a little rough, etc. But other major things like leaks and internal damages will not be obvious until ridden for some time.

Unless you buy a brand new bike, always leave aside a certain sum of money for additional repairs even after they gurantee that everything is in working condition because by the term working-condition, this prob means that the bike will start and move and get you home and about without it failing in the midst of riding and causing you to get into an accident.

Remember, always put aside a certain sum of money.

this is good advice. Buying a bike is heng-suay...even a brand new bike may give you problems!

I'd buy a bike cheap, then spend a few hundred overhauling it at a mechanic I trust. But that's only if you already have $ in your bank.

If you're buying a bike by installment, then you don't really have much of a choice. I know of a guy who is paying $4.6k for a FT NSR SP. Boh pian..he doesn't have much money now. His downpayment was only $300.

oh, if u are buying from cka.. can go ask for freebies. my friend got a solid crashbar that was taken from another bike in their shop free~! and shining too~! stuff like throttle grip , head lights etc. can smile smile ask them if can swop for u or not. and ask if they happen to have a pair of p-plate from other bike that they can give to u also.... save u some money. btw p-plate is around $12 if u purchase from petrol station. if not, buy urself a p-plate and ask them to do u a favour and help u fix on ur bike before collection. if u dun mind second hand box/pillion back rest, they do have also.

Sorry to hijack this thread temporarily.

We're at Pitstop on Friday's from 8.30pm onwards. It depends on the crowd, but we may leave there between 10.30 to 11.00 to head another location - for more food, kopi, and TCSS. :hungry:

Manowar, if u would like meet up with us but can't make it till later, u can always let one of us know when u'll be able to join and we'll let u know u where we'll be.

Alternatively, i'm sure some of us wouldn't mind meeting on other nights for kopi as well.

Just PM me if u need more details.
