Hi Bros,

I'm a noob here and currently taking my Class 2B. Decided to take the plunge. I guess I'm going through mid-life crisis. Anyways, I need some advice and views on a few bike models that I have shortlisted for my virgin supermotard bike.

Aprilia MX125 ($8,500):

One of the few legal motards out there. Handles very well and powerful 2 stroke engine when derestricted. Looks chio too with the oversize disc brakes but heard quite a few negative things about it.

1) High FC

2) Left kick start

3) Exhaust tends to rust (Saw a couple at Mah and the rust is quite bad)

4) No fuel cap lock

5) Parts and support not readily available

KTM 200EXC ($13k+ and $1.5k for motard conversion):

Can convert to motard legally. Powerful engine and tons of street cred. But friggin expensive when new together with the conversion. Looks damn sweet but high FC and maintenance cost.

Yamaha DT125X (Not sure of price. Around same price as MX125??)

Have not really seen much reviews or post on this bike. Not sure if its available locally also. (Any bros know where to buy this bike?) But from what I have read so far a good simple bike and easy to maintain. Electric start a plus. Parts and maintainance easy to find. Not as powerful but FC good

Suzuki DR125SM (Forum quoted $10k+???)

Least favourite bike of the lot based on looks. Does not look as garang as the rest. New bike from Suzuki so it should be quite good tho. Also Jap brand so maintenace and reliability should not be a problem. Damn ex tho.

Husqvarna SM125 (Est $10k)

One of my top choices together with the Yamaha. Checked with Mah and they are bringing this model in Feb. Of the whole lot listed, the most chio. Not many reviews too but heard its damn powerful and handling very good. A bit reserved with the Husky cos not many reviews.

What do you bros think of the bikes above. I know some of you will advice me to get a second hand bike cos I would want a more powerful bike later. But I plan to keep the bike for sometime so I'm willing to buy new rather than second hand. I own a car too so this will be my second mode of transport. Note its second and not secondary! I still will ride the bike quite a bit (50-50 with the car. Maybe to work too!).

Any comments and views is greatly apprciated to help me make a final decision.

Thanks bros!

yeapz.. get used to riding on da rd ferz.. no pt gettin such a powerful bike juz fer da rd.. if u`re talkin abt racing.. den its a different case.. u dun need too much raw power on da rd..

if u wan sumtin powerful.. reliable.. cheap to maintain.. not so bad f/c.. da answer will.. n always be da yamaha wr2.. diz topic has been discussed many times though.. if u haf da money.. get a ktm2.. u cant compare a 125 wif a 200.. let alone a 125 4-stroker wif a 200 2-stroker..

newayz.. no pt motarding a 2b bike if u ask me.. a 2a bike will make a better motard.. more engine brakin power so u can slide into corners.. all da best in ur selection~.. =)

Hi trial-sin,

Agree with your logic. No point motarding a 2B bike which means the KTM solution is not a consideration. However I simply love the looks of a supermotard thus why I insist on getting a motard even if its 2B. Haha...call me stubborn. Supermotards are wicked lah!

Anyways, looking at the replies, I'm still torn between getting a brand new Husky SM125, Yamaha DT125X or a second hand motard-converted WR2. What do you think? I can't seem to find much on the DT125 though. Not sure if they sell locally?

wr2 motard is good for a start.

i got myself a ktm because i wasn't really satisfied with wr2's lack of upgrades.

I asked Mah about the Husky SM125 and they said they will be bringing in the new one in Feb. Abt 10K.

I'll check back with them then. Hopefully its the SM-ready one. :)

The Suzuki is not my cup of tea. Too soft looking.

hi,darrell/

1st off,its cool u r getting a bike licence at dis pt of yr life! i understand yr concerns abt fc but lets be objective here 4 all future motard 2b riders!

1)power = poor fc

2)good fc = lower power

once u understand dat it makes things easier 4 u 2 think things tru.

the most macho, meanest 2b motard bike is the ktm 200!

bikes r not like cars- 3mths service 1 time!

bikes offer the luxury or setting the machine up 2 yr liking/riding style etc

so dat means until u r happy with the bike set up,regular visits 2 the shop!

hi maintenance, how hard r u going 2 push the bike?

the harder u push, the hi-er the costs esp on yr tyres!

so,pls weight all dis info n think tru it carefully!

+ point of buying a new ktm is dat u have the stock wheels n u can go off road 2 improve yr riding skills.

hope dis helps u out!
