Google for the manual and download it and read every letter.

It will turn you into a mechanic :thumb:

If I could turn back time, id buy ebc HH pads. Also, the screeching sound costs too much to rectify. I changed the pads for both ends and that didnt do the trick in fact, it got slightly louder. It only happens when its cold.

Hey Hydher, do you happen to have the user manual for steed with you? It's crazy to google it, most of the links are broken...

Thanks for the compliments :)

Coyote66 I am not sure. I'm not familiar with the Shadow 400. Do you know what is the big bike equivalent for the Shadow 400? I'm guessing it's the Shadow ACE 750. 400cc bikes are considered toys to the Americans and they do not bother to check compatibility with them lol. Luckily for us Steed owners the 400 is identical to the 600 except the engine.

You can help by taking photos of your pegs form at least 2 angles and then measure the size of the pin if you can. I'm betting it should fit, just need to get the correct adaptors.

Click on the links below to get to the site where I got them from.

Initially I was drooling over these but decide not to as they wouldn't match my other accessories

I also strongly recommend that everyone should get this

ec_tsk-led_300.jpgLink4

They put tail and brake lights into the stock signal housing. Might not be legal due to our ridiculous laws about LED brakelights, but a simple disconnect of the connectors under the seat disables them, sure to pass inspection. Installation takes a little patience and reading of wiring diagram, but worth the effort plus quite fun to DIY =D

2 more days for their end of year sale! lol

I got the forward extensions from ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Shadow-VLX-600-6-Forward-Controls-Extensions-Honda-/250703365236?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item3a5f15c474

These may fit the Shadow 400, assuming it's similar to the ACE 750

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honda-Shadow-ACE-750-FORWARD-CONTROLS-EXTENSIONS-pegs-/250703364777?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item3a5f15c2a9

Oh and just to share, I use a commercial shipping service called HopShopGo. Quite cheap shipping, fast, reliable, and most importantly, has an US address for the sites that don't ship worldwide. I've heard horror stories about V-post....

AnAmIwEk, maybe you can try drilling a hole in the drum brake housing and sticking a tire air valve there. Then buy a can of brake cleaner and spray into it every morning. Not guaranteed to work, as one of the previous owners did that on my bike but I haven't got brake cleaner to try.

I'm not sure if all Steeds will burn engine oil, but mine did when I had electrical problems due to the annoying wire issue. After it was solved (temporary?), it stopped burning oil. In any case it's good to check at least once a month cuz you wouldn't want to ride around with insufficient engine oil... Will end up with an expensive overhaul if it's serious.

Btw you should get protective gear first before spending on the bike. Too many lousy/inconsiderate/reckless drivers on the road these days... I'm sure everyone here knows how most taxi drivers are on the road

one more thing: The manual states that the recommended engine oil should be API classification of SF or SG. I've read up about it, basically they mean different levels of additives, with the later revisions (eg SM) having less phosphorus content. Taken from wiki:

"All the current gasoline categories (including the obsolete SH), have placed limitations on the phosphorus content for certain SAE viscosity grades (the xW-20, xW-30) due to the chemical poisoning that phosphorus has on catalytic converters. Phosphorus is a key anti-wear component in motor oil and is usually found in motor oil in the form of zinc dithiophosphate. Each new API category has placed successively lower phosphorus and zinc limits, and thus has created a controversial issue of obsolescent oils needed for older engines, especially engines with sliding (flat/cleave) tappets."

I love my 17 year old bike and so I'm not taking chances with engine oil. Nothing less than Motul 7100, 10W40, API rated SG.

Thanks xavez! Was really gonna give up searching for the manual.

Anyway, anyone has any idea why when I gear down while the bike is moving, there's a loud and sharp click sound on my gear pedal. But when the bike's stationary, there's no sound when I gear down. Is there some fault in the gear transmission box?

Im riding a steed 400 by the way.

mine does the same actually... its louder as it reaches gear 2/1 right? i think probably cause the bike is moving.. so the gears are rotating as we down which causes the sound.. i think..

Nope, the sound doesnt become softer or louder when it reaches gear 2/1. It remains the same clock throughout the gear shift. However, if I were to step down the gear softly, there wont be a loud click, it will just be like a normal gear shifting...

hey wrshao,

im not really sure whats happening then bro... been having trouble shifting to 2nd gear without going neutral myself... gonna service my bike tomorrow..

first motors ubi for steed.

Xavex, get thicker wires for the alternator wires the next time it gets burnt.

Its a high current thing so that might cause the issue.

Be generous with the black tape.

Get some spare fuses too.

Yes it applies to all vehicles.

Fyi xavez, i changed the engine and radiator gaskets.

If you want to change coolant, get the water base type like the water wetter. Dont get engine ice.

No problem wrshao

My gearbox is noisy too... either due to old age of maybe something worn out. When I kick to first from neutral there's a loud THUNK! and then if I step on the gear level hard after it's in first, it goes CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK until I release it. Then when I clutch in on neutral, there's a faint clanging sound from the clutch side. Asked a mech and he says the clanging is normal. Didn't ask about the gear change though, as I'm afraid it may be an expensive problem lol.

AnAmIwEk it could be that your clutch free play is too much. My gear changes were rough and often goes into neutral also. I reduced the freeplay and it became smooth and engages easily.

Planet Motors. But for major works, if you want Tender Loving Care (ie not getting scratches on your pipes) maybe elsewhere.

Get the mechs to check your wheels for freeplay and that it spins freely. If there isn't any problem there's no need to change wheel bearings.

Roughly 200 for the work you intend to do, assuming you get the premium oil.

Hydher, I've change the coolant a few months back already. Some green colour normal coolant. I think coolant performance don't differ that much across brands. The main purpose for coolant is water pump lubrication, anti corrosion, and anti freeze. Specific heat capacity of coolant mixture is actually lower than pure water, or in layman terms coolant mixture is a poorer conductor of heat.

Hmm spark plugs and brakepads change at first motors. Brake pads get the EBC HH. Dont get anything lesser even though they tell you not racing no need to get such a good one. Price is $20 plugs + 65 Front ebc hh + bearing $about 65. if you haven bleed the front brake before, go do it $10-15.

Oil and oil filter($15) change elsewhere. You will need 3.3L with the oil filter change. I would go down the road into planet motors.

coz first motors only have rock oil. Semi syn is 18 and fully syn 28 i think.

Yes but thats why water wetter is very popular because what it does is it gives the coolness of pure water but still able to get close to the metal. It works for me and I love it. I think its $16 for a small bottle that would last me maybe about 10 coolant changes.
