Hi guys....need some advise. If the forward control requires some form of welding on de bike frame,

will de bike pass inspection? No cutting involved, just welding the forward control to de bike frame.

Saw a few steeds at the DGR 2016 but din get to meet the riders...oh only one (blue and white with white wall tires...

ezr7171 - saw your bike but din see you ..I think..recognised the red canister holder..

 

Oh my... I guess I was wandering around watching other bikers.. It is pity we did not meet that day.

 

But DGR was a fabulous event!!

 

And I have no idea why the hell it was not properly advertised -- if I wasn't told here in this thread on this forum about it, I would never know it happens...

Normally no welding is required to install kits you may buy, say, on eBay.

I installed mine without problems, the only thing I needed is time and wrenches. I posted a short story in this thread some time ago (see some pics here: https://goo.gl/photos/eojaEUJC9r1YcEB98).

 

 

As for inspection -- I have no idea...

 

On one hand, the last time I had inspection the LTA guy suggected me to put the pillion seat back the next time (although passed me successfully). I mean even unbolting the removable seat can be considered as a violation by LTA inspector.

 

On the other -- take those crazy custom bikes we saw a month ago on DGR! No bike would ever pass the LTA inspection as they position themselves. NO ONE.

But they all have license plates and guys ride them. So hell knows..

 

After all, in the worst case, you (me) can unbolt the forward extenders and put the pegs back to stock position for the inspection, haha.

Meanwhile the saga continues.

 

I'm grateful to the previous owner of my Steed for caring the bike. But its muffler definitely lost its original shape: heavy dents, and scratches have been kiiling the show. It's been the part I always wanted to replace but I couldn't find another stock muffler in a proper condition here in SG. Nothing.

 

Then I tried Japan Yahoo auctions but good stock 400's pipes would cost a fortune and a great headache to ship to SG

 

Eventually, I gave up on Asia and moved to the proven place: US eBay.

 

Yes, they have no 400s market. But I hoped (and still do) that a stock VLX 600 exhaust should fit my VLS 400 frame and engine

 

A few months of watching eBay, and.... the last night I received the stock VLX 600 muffler I was lucky to catch!

 

The rather innovative packaging made me a bit anxious:

Hello!

 

1. Anything is possible.

2. There are (almost?) no mods which are street-legal in Singapore (google for LTA practice).

3. Just because of #2 there are (almost?) no people/shops in Singapore who are capable to do mods.

4. My suggestion: consider changing petrified 404 tires with new good ones (say, Metz's 8xx), you will no longer be afraid to use the rear brake.

5. Personally, I find the rear drum hub quite a sexy part of Steed. it's not a street-fighter.. I guess I would better go for a chain -> belt upgrade.

 

But if you are crazy enough to proceed with the change -- I will be proud of you! :)

There are many bikes using rear drum brakes so its actually very reliable. My 1990 xr200 from many years ago, my vespa and nighthawk 250 had drum brakes for front and rear wheels. Just need to know your bike a lil better and all is good. Hehehe

 

Guys riding harleys do the belt to chain conversion. Steed already chain driven. Just let the bike be. Hahaha

Well, I mentioned the belt drive only to re-focus attention to some "cruiser-appropriate" features. To me a chain is a synonym of noise and dirt, even if it shines, haha. A shaft-drive on a cruiser with all its perks still does not look that sexy as belt that implies nice big pulleys. Again, I am not into changing the Steed drive, it is pretty good the way it is.

 

Instead, my mind is busy with making the seat position as low and far as possible.

 

A removal of 2-inches thick filling from the seat alone gives a good effect. I bought a dirty stock VLX seat on eBay, pulled the plastic frame out of and now re-shaping it (lowering the backrest part, cutting out extra plastic) to properly fit it into the silhouette of the rear fender. Now I need to think about upholstery -- this part is something that I would like a professional to do, hahaha.

Gents, any thoughts about upholsters, any suggestions/shops?

Any advise on this? Something to do with the carbs?

Did you install a stock or aftermarket pipes?

 

Carb engines are extremely sensitive to intake/carb/exhaust balance, you may easily break it if you change one part of that equation without tuning others.

If you put "free flow" pipes alone you make the engine running lean that gives you a lack of thrust on lower revs and overheating. Usually pipe kits come with matching carb kits to maintain a proper gas mixture.

 

Try to use a exhaust gas analyzer as a starting point before any other adjustments.

Your exhaust quiet or noisy? If noisy then maybe the air/fuel mixture needs adjustment. Else u may need a bigger fuel jetting.

Hey there. I'm afraid you don't have much options.

a) If you have a lot of spare time in 10am-5pm range on weekdays you may enjoy riding from one shop to another asking guys and uncles for the stuff you need.

b) You may try Honda warehouse at Ubi, they may have some engine parts although I wouldn't hope -- all Steeds are discontinued long time ago.

c) Go to eBay and order VLX parts from the US.

d) For some not-critical parts you may try China-made stuff from AliExpress
