It depends, especially if you're talking about "destination".

If your "destination" is somewhere in Singapore, a simple lock would be fine.

But since this post is in "Trip Thrills", i'm assuming that you're talking about visiting another country, such as Malaysia -- where you have to park your bike at a place for a period of time

If you know that you're going to go to a populated place, where you know that vehicular theft is common, investing in a lock (disc lock, maybe) and an alarm system provides you the insurance that prospective theives will find that your bike would be harder to steal.

Again, I'm not saying this is foolproof...There's other ways to take care of your expensive asset...and that is not to park at a place where you think danger lurks. If you have to, going with a group enhances the security. Moreover, being close to where you've parked your bike...that's another suggestion.

this rule applies on any planet.

Park legally, and leave the rest to God. If your bike is targeted, it's a matter of seconds before it's no longer yours.

Going :offtopic: a bit...

With so many posts already, I finally came to a conclusion not to explain so much on how things are done, how points are being earned, how Jack climbed the beanstalk. Doesn't make posting look worthwhile...

No offence to threadstarter but this would be my last post where I type paragraphs of what I think its correct, or where there's decision making where more heads are requested to make a decision...we able-bodied people have the capacity to think logically to function on Earth, as how we have came to think about it.

Cheers.

Umm, no harsh feelings here as well. Just wanted to start the new year on a new note. Being pissed off of people who don't take the time to do some searching to get their answers. Forum fatigue; I'll get some fresh air right away

Well, welcome to Trips and thrills. Hope you can embark on a trip, probably gaining useful insight on touring from all the "iron butt" tourers here.

i and my fren used those bicycle lock to lock all bike together.. 2 bike:1 lock.

for indivisual i used to tricircle (or better if u can find) and lock both front and rear brake disc. alarm also can..

most impt is e place u lock.. dun lock till cannot even move yr bike but at ulu ulu place also no use..

Posted

buy those normal lock and then lock over yr chain ..

either he break yr lock , or cut the chain then join back ..

if riding kups which is very popular there, try to get a chain to lock your rear wheel to your bike. a malaysian parking warden gave me that advise and i saw many malaysians doing the same thing in Kluang.

what i always do handle lock, cover the bike, most important make gd relation with the guard, tips them well 10 buck the most it takes...hopefully it work 2 all out there.....

chain the two bikes at the swingarm area, not leaving the chain at the ground.

if there are syndicates targeting bikes, i doubt normal chain n locks would deter these experienced thieves. Normal chain n locks can be easily cut with bolt cutters like these:

http://images.orgill.com/200x200/6051551.jpg

Thieves are usually more into bikes parts, and if can steal the whole bike, damaging a brake disc or chain is a small sacrifice.

1 method i invented was using 2 disc brake locks on 2 sides of a single disc caliper. This way, the bike can neither be pushed forward or backward.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e109/whisperer400/DSCF1200.jpg

The rational is to immobilize the bike completely, so they can't push your bike away even if they manage to disable your handle lock, which is chicken feet, and also to prevent the thieves from trying to break off a single disc lock by pushing the bike in a direction to allow the locked side to hit the caliper hard enough to break the disc. And maybe to prevent self-carelessness in trying to ride off with a single disc lock still in place, resulting in either a damaged disck, caliper or lock. This is effective if your disc lock can only reach the outermost hole in the disc (easiest to break) If u think it's impossible to break, imagine the shear force of the weight of the whole bike acting on the small surface area of the brake disc. Well, if course you can get "longer" disc locks to reach the inner holes of the brake disc. And for the super kia-see, can get 4 disc locks for both wheels! Dat way the only way to steal your bike is to carry it onto a lorry or use a crane!

As for the chain n locks, get alloyed ones. I got this heavy duty grade 80 alloyed chain

from a shop behind ah boy, the guy told me the only way to cut the chain is to use a grinder. He himself had to use one to cut the chain to the length i wanted.

http://germes-online.com/direct/dbimage/50254123/Angle_Grinder.jpg

if try to use a bolt cutter, the jaw will break. He tried it himself before. i think it's call transport chain or something, usually used for lifting heavy loads. It's much more cheaper than specialised chain n lock sets for motorcycles(high end ones costs a few hundred!), and you can buy them at any length or thickness. And to compliment it, i got an ABUS alloyed lock which can only be cut by a grinder as well(tested n proven, and quite popular with households in JB). The lock alone costs about $50, but it's nothing compared to losing your own bike.

Thks whisperer.

i am pretty impressed with your method of locking two disk brake lock to a disk..

it is innovative and cheap to implement..

thumbs up..

guys pls do not trust your bike to the hotel guards, most guards wouldn't care

what happen to your bike even if you tips him a lot.

some guards may even link to the syndicates and the moment you leave your bike thinking that it is in safe hands. they would call up the syndicates to come collect your bike liao. since they know the owner is going up to rest for the night.

the chain and lock sounds good !

but guys please dont use the disc brake lock.. mine rusted inside and one fine day when i needed to use the bike. i couldnt unlock it... had to take a cab.. sad :( if u really need to use it. please remember to constantly spray lubricant in that device... it looks normal on the outside. but rusty on the inside for mine..

it was a damm pain trying to get it out, squeezing a saw blade in between the lock and the brake disc.. being very very careful not to damage the disc in the process..

bad experience.

care to show where u got the chain and lock? thanks

Yeah, we need to bring this message out to all the bikers that are still intent on going to Malaysia -- that the thieves operate with a few men that can simply carry and haul one's bike into a goods vehicle and drive off.

On our riding group, we have had 2 riders lose their bikes at the same place already...

Moreover, these theives don't usually want to use the bike, they want to make money out of the bike parts. The only suggestions to deter this is what whisperer has done...chain multiple bikes together with a heavy duty chain link. Or chain your bike to a fixed immovable stand like a lamp pole, a metal fence, or a bicycle stand.
