hi guys just wanna ask..i got a habit of using engine breaking to slow down to stop for traffic light..i know its normal..but the prob i like to drop to lower gear for a stronger engine breaking and use less brake..its like from speed at 70-90 i drop gear one by one n use engine breaking..so the question is can it harm my engine or something else?and is it a good thing or bad?

thanks..

Bro... you mean engine braking and not breaking.

Won't harm your engine much but will cause your drive chain to stretch. The loading your drive chain gets is going to be reversed of hard acceleration.

For high speed riding, like track riding... engine braking is essential to slow the bike down for the corners instead of using the rear brake.

Only the front brake is used 99% of the time on the track... using the rear brake is totally suicidal.

70-90 n drop 1 gear, u trying to do engine e-brake?

i'm not sure how each bike's gear box work, but i go 5th ard 40+km/h, which is what i est my 4th gear norm will go. sometime i go till 50+ n forgot n drop gear, it already feels like hard braking.

Accident can happen anytime, anywhere.

However ask yourself, do you want to fall at 120km/h or 60km/h?

just roll off the throttle slowly (at a long distance) to engine brake safely. if the speed gets lower, drop a gear and release the clutch slowly. all this done while braking at the same time. this is what they teach us at the driving/ riding centre, correct?

engine braking does cause wear and tear but it is all inevitable. using it too much causes more stress on the parts but if you need do so for competitive purposes, to each his own. some people clutch in totally and rely on the brakes alone, that's pretty dangerous. imagine you're rolling to a stop at 70-60km/hr, clutch in and squeezing brakes. one car from behind suddenly overtake you and swerve to your front, you panic and grab the front brake because there is no engine brake to help you slow down faster, sudden braking = wheel lock or skid. bike buang, whole sai tao chui. like that save what money on wear and tear?

engine braking is gd but must apply wif brakes.

i use engine braking all d time... key thing is to blip yr throttle so u match yr engine speed when u drop gear...

last time someone told me, engine brake wear off ur clutch, brake wear off ur brake pad, so it's really up 2 u which u want to change often.

i feel that it's really to each it's own, if u know how to control ur brake, not necessary for engine brake. i usually just rely on engine brake just to slow down, anticipated stop then brake, e-brake use both.

It is safer to downshift and use engine braking then to pull in the clutch and use just the brakes to slow down especially for higher speed corners.

Clutch plates for my bike cost about $150, a good set of brake pads... about $110.

I think my life is worth my than the $40 savings.

Most people don't realise that they wear off their clutch plates by slipping their clutch especially doing pick ups from traffic light to traffic light then by downshifting and using engine braking.

actually up to indiv preference which brake to use, they all serve the same purpose.

4 me, i dont do hi speed corner. i guess if it comes 2 corner u'll use engine brake n normal brake, if that's what u mean.

straight road stop just cluch in n press brake, if u use engin-brake then brake also can, but note that ur brake light will not on during engin-brake n plp behind might not notice.

Shouldn't it be brake first, then clutch in ?

just sumarize (proper technique taught at school):

1) anticipated stop: (slow down-see 2, if needed) brake, clutch in, apply pressure, more pressure, almost reaching-release pressure and stop

2) slowing down: i) close throttle slightly (soft engine brake), step on brake if necessary

ii) (similar to 1) brake, clutch in, apply pressure-speed control

3) conering: (slow down-see 2), brake slightly and control speed, release brake, maintain throttle and do your corner

4) e-brake: close throttle fully (hard engine brake), brake hard (not sudden), rear brake maintain, front brake apply hard pressure, pull in clutch last minute, stop.

for 1, 2 n 3, braking is always front and rear.

addon (not taught at school):

for 1, not necessary to shift gear, during brake, shift gear to match speed.

during 1, if u need e-brake, just apply more pressure (not sudden or wheels will lock). or could just release clutch, then become 4.

during 2, if u need e-brake, straight go to 4.

during 3, if u need e-brake, straight go to 4, do not execute turn until u hv control of bike, n ur front is clear.

during 4, it's better to push horn, warn those around you.

whenever u're slowing down, always look behind, if the vehicle is too close, maintain brake pressure till last moment then hard, horn if necessary.

during free gear, always shift gear to match your speed.

bad habits:

free gear, then brake

use engine brake all the way thur until the last minute then brake

using only front or rear brake

shortcuts (do at ur own risk):

during conering, don't use brake, purely rely on engine-brake, bending low at high speed

during e-brake, clutch in, purely rely on foot and rear brake

using e-brake for anticipated stop

u can actually replace engine brake with foot n rear brake, vice versa, take note, if u engine-brake, no signal for vehicle behind u

phew, think that's all i can think of, let me know if there's any mistake or additions.

apply all at the same time better what.. rear brake front brake engine brake. don't think about the wear out ar. afterall ur life is there. dun endanger yourself.

crazy, engine brake+front brake=e-brake :dot:

unless u got another right hand help u control ur throttle. :D

But if he wants to brake, y should e hand control e throttle? Isn't it suppose to close throttle when braking?

if it's e-brake, thats the procedure, however do u execute e-brake on all ur brake?
