something to share on the petrol types in thailand if not already briefed to you by simon.

1) 2 variants: gasoline (what we have) and gasohol (cheaper mixture that thailand is promoting and will replace gasoline - ron95 at least if not ron91 as well - within 3 year of its commercial introduction, which should be sometime 2007)

2) for gasoline, they have ron91 and ron95.

3) for gasohol, thailand (PTT the thai version of SPC at least) uses ethanol as a mixture with ron91 gasoline to achieve a ron95 equivalent in a ratio of 10% ethanol, 90% ron91 gasoline, termed as E10.

4) ethanol in excess quantities (unknown what volume) is known to or said to cause ill effects to rubber and some other materials like cracks or other compositional damages.

5) carburated machines have o-rings, rubber seals, etc. that is in direct contact with the gasohol and hence, may be damaged as a result.

6) FI machines errr... not sure if there're any rubber components in direct contact with the fuel but use gasohol at your own risk.

7) gasohol is THB$1.50/L cheaper than ron95 gasoline counterpart.

8) ron95 gasoline generally cost THB$27/L (may be THB$26+ in some places and up to THB$29+ in remote areas or in the mountains)

9) gasohol is usually written in thai and the last 3 "alphabets" looks something like "eea" where the 2es are double reversed on both axes.

10) this image (http://www.pttplc.com/th/images/gasohole_th.gif) shows how the word gasohol in thai looks like. print it out and stick it on your petrol tank or something and if need be, point to the pump attendent and tell them no-no to gasohol.

photo of a petrol kiosk pricing billboard. note the thai wordings.

read somewhere that ron95 gasoline is colour coded ORANGE in thailand. not sure if this applies to all but at least for PTT and this leaf station it does.

when in doubt. go for the more expensive choice

wrong decision!!! cos some stations do not sell petrol and their most expensive option is the 95 Gasohol.....

print out the thai wordings of the "RON95 petrol" if you cant recognise the thai fonts.

** Compulsory 3rd party coverage insurance to be purchased at border (minimum 10days for 140B-price might change), can also purchase at Gurun R&R Caltex station.

For those who are insured with NTUC INCOME, you do not need to get the 3rd party insurance if you are going to Hatyai. this is because NTUC INCOME insurance covers you up to 80.5km away from Thai border.... Hatyai is just 60+km away only.
