I write movie reviews as a form of recommendation to all who loves to watch movies. I don't lend my DVDs nor borrow DVDs from others as well. Been there, done that and a number of my DVDs are permanently camping with my friends who know how to borrow but don't know how to return... :sorry:

Movie Review On 'Jangan Pandang Belakang' (Don't Look Back)

To date, the box office earnings of 'Jangan Pandang Belakang' has doubled the cost of producing it. This movie has claimed the title of being Malaysia's best horror movie thus far. Similar to most horror movies nowadays, this movie too is said to be based on a true life experience. Nothing draws in the audience more than to know that a horror movie may just be real.

The story revolves around Darma (Pierre Andre of 'Gol & Gincu' fame) who had lost his fiancee, Rose, when she allegedly committed suicide. What caused her suicide? That is the puzzle that Darma and his fiancee's twin sister, Seri (actress Intan Ladyana), have to figure out and solve. The only clue that links to her death is a small gourd with its mouth covered. It is when Darma takes possession of this gourd that sinister and strange incidents start to happen.

I entered the cinema with high hopes and expectations of getting myself scared silly. Maybe that is due to the favourable reviews that I've read online and the recommendation from my colleague to watch the movie. However, my expectations fall short.

There are two scenes that are obviously ripped off from the movies, 'Shutter' and 'The Ring'. Instead of building up suspense through the use of lighting, mood or music, the director resorted to shock tactics by using a shrill, shrieking scream a second before the ghost appears, to jolt the audience in their seats. Even the ghost is a joke. No doubt that it's features are gruesome but the standard of special effects is laughable. It's movements are mechanical and strings can be seen attached to it when it was flying.

I have no idea just how expensive movie making is but with a budget of RM$1.5 million, I expect the editing and special effects of this movie to be at least decent. I feel that the director would have gotten a better horrified reaction from the audience had he used an actress to portray the ghost rather than a gruesome mechanical mannequin. That ghost managed to draw laughter out of me instead of horrified gasps. By the way, there are just too many scenes of the ghost flying or fleeting behind the characters' background which I feel is already a tad cliche.

I wouldn't be surprised if this movie is the lead actress' first movie because she acted stiff and unnatural. With regards to the plot and storyline, overall, it is a good attempt by the lead actor, Pierre Andre, as this movie was written by him. The story is commendable even though there are some loose ends that are not fully explained. This movie carries a warning that states it is not suitable for pregnant women or those with heart ailments. In my opinion, the warning is not because the movie is horrifyingly scary but the shock tactics employed in the movie may just make the pregnant women jump out of their seats and give birth or make the people will heart ailments suffer a heart attack.

Nevertheless, I would still recommend this movie because if you are not scared or shocked silly, you will still get a laugh out of it, courtesy of Darma's senile grandmother (played by actress Rusminah Sidek). Her antics really drew the most laughter from me. This movie is comparable with the rest of the Asian horror movies out there so do watch it... :thumb:

Movie Review On 'Mr Bean's Holiday'

'Mr Bean's Holiday' is the second installment of the big screen movie version to the half hour comedy series on TV. Mr Bean has won a trip to Cannes, $200 euros and a videocam in a raffle draw. What ensues is one misadventure after another as he makes his way to Cannes. He is joined in his misadventures by an inspiring actress and a boy who is the son of a Cannes movie judge.

The usual physical humour trademark of Mr Bean is aplenty in this movie that it borders on no logic at times. For example, Mr Bean got himself trapped in a makeshift toilet by the side of a long winding road. He cannot escape so what did he do? He carries the toilet off its hinges and walks with it. How he managed to carry the whole cubicle is beyond me. A vehicle smashes the cubicle to smithereens and lo and behold, Mr Bean is free and escapes unscathed.

It intrigues me that no matter how bad the situation seems, Mr Bean always manages to come on top. All in all, a watchable movie especially if you are a Mr Bean fan. For me, I'd rather stick with the half hour series... :cheeky:

Kill Bill Vol 1 and Vol 2:

In my personal opinion, both movies are just filled with gore and cheesy plots, most copied from old HK gungfu movies.....

The sheer lack of intelligence on the part of the main character leaves one to wonder why the movie garnered so much rave review....

But if Gore and cheesy plots are your thing, then these 2 movie will gather full points from you.

Movie Review On 'Spider-Man 3'

Sam Raimi has really outshine himself with Spider-Man 3. In this 3rd installment, we are presented with not one, not two but three super villains namely the Sandman (escaped convict, Marko Flint, who fell into a sandpit when an experiment was being conducted and thus possesses the ability to merge with sand), Venom (Eddie Brock, Peter Parker's rival photographer that is infected with the alien symbiote) and New Goblin (Harry Osborne, taking over his dead father's legacy and seeking revenge against Spider-Man for killing his father). Actually, there are 4 villains if you count Peter Parker fighting his inner demons when an alien symbiote attaches itself to him, transforming his Spidey costume into an all black, sleek look.

Although the new costume enhances his spidey reflexes and strength, it also brings out the horrid side of him as the symbiote nurtures the negative traits of it's host, making Peter meaner and obnoxious. The CGI of Marko dissipating sand from his body and merging into a whole body once again is really awesome. Even the New Goblin's attire is far more stylish than the corny Green Goblin and his hoverboard, more sophisticated and compact. The special effects and action sequences this time round are top notch. If you like the railway battle scene in 'Spider-Man 2', you'll love Spidey's aerial battles with the villains, more. Those aerial battles keep you at the edge of your seats and are adrenaline pumping.

It is interesting to see that two of the super villains, do possess conscience (just like Doc Ock towards the ending of Spider-Man 2). Sandman needs money to save his dying daughter and thus to him, the end justifies the means. Harry's sense of morality is brought out as he contemplates on being the man that his dead father wanted or to mark his own path and be his own man. As for Eddie Brock, he is too obsessed with wanting revenge against Peter Parker that he cannot see the error of his ways (I was thinking hard when I heard the voice of the actor playing Eddie Brock. Now where did I hear that voice before and why does his facial expressions look familiar? It's Eric Forman from That 70s Show! )

Other than the villains, Peter Parker has to contend with his love life with Mary Jane as a new woman, Gwen Stacy, enters his life. This time round, the movie is 2 hours 20 minutes long as it has many plots to cover. However, I don't feel the time dragging as the movie had me entralled with its magnificient CGI special effects and interesting storyline. Personally, I feel that the Spider-Man movies get better with every new installment. A definite must watch movie... :thumb:

I went to Rivervale Mall yesterday and happened to watch a promotional event for the movie 'The Rise of the Silver Surfer'. They had these ang moh people dressed themselves up as the heroes and villains. One of the main characters, The Thing, wasn't there though. I guess it is hard to do a costume for The Thing. So in the end, it was The Fantastic Three with the Silver Surfer and Dr Doom. Kinda lame to me when I saw the whole thing... :cheeky:
