looks like first time buying a bike is not easy...

so many to choose from n so many opinions.

i have riden scrambler, scooter, cruiser, sport n naked bikes.

most easiest bike to ride is lightest bike for manoeuvring.

hardiest to ride is the heaviest, good for speeding on a long straight roads/highways.

most clean is scooters, will not get your feet wet n shield from flies.

most dirty is scrambler, both front n back splash from road grimes.

most thrilled is sports, down points r many crashes too.

most lazy is cruiser, after sometime backache.

most loved is naked, not sure why but after all these years with so many bikes.

most properly is the riding posture, not sporty or lay back.

luv to ride on my rw125, even ride to nowhere in malaysia.

not fast but slow n easy trips. :thumb: :cheeky:

:goodluck: for your bike selection.

But the CBR150 if put box, won't be that sporty anymore.

U need a box to put ur books.

Work ur sums before deciding what to buy. Best not to drag the instalments, its just extra hard earned $$$ down the drain.

Money

U work out how much maximum u can pay comfortably for downpayment, then the rest will be by instalments. The longer u drag, the more interest u pay. :nono:

Take note esp for 2nd hand bikes, u need to set aside some money(maybe 300 or more) just in case the chain is wearing out or the tyres almost goner.

That's why u need a fren to go along with u to buy bikes, esp if u r a new bird.

Many shops can smell a new bird from miles away and sharpen the choppers before u know it.

Buy what u can afford comfortably, I cannot stress more.

Maintenance

Usually shops will give u maybe 1 month or mileage warranty. Dun buy from them if they dun give lah, other shops will. Anything spoiled during that period, they are responsible.

Phantom 200 Vs CBR150

I dun ride these 2 bikes, but I think they are good buys, esp the phantom.

I've seen quite a few ladies riding phantoms. Value for money bikes.

Maintenance for these 2 bikes are almost the same, 1 bottle of engine oil and 1 plug. These bikes are 4 strokes, shd have less probs than sportsbikes like NSR.

Go to the Phantom or CBR thread in this forum to know more if u r keen to buy either of these 2 bikes.

Helmets and stuff

Again, get a full face helmet and riding jacket. Set aside $300 for these.

Box

Some phantoms comes with box. If not, u shd get 1 box and the box rack for ard $150 total.

That range is about right for downpayment, rarely a bit less, so that they can get the paper work started. If you can, get a loan from someone aside from the finance company or shop due to high interest rate, which can be put to a lot better use. I got a $5K loan from my mum and I'm grateful for it.

If I didn't get the loan, I would have ended up paying from $300 - $1200 in interest!! I'm sure we all could do something worthwhile with that amount!

Hi there,

No offence to Phantom riders, in fact i rode phantom for my first bike and even though i am a guy i found the bike hard to manage.

The front wheel and the bike in general is quite heavy. Also the bike is rather long and hard to maneuver. Tendency to skid is very high.

Now riding a TW200. Quite low for a scrambler and price for new one is about the same as that for the phantom. Difference is that it is light and easy to handle. Also the wheels are nice and thick and results in lesser skidding.

Here is a link to the bike:

http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/products...me/10/home.aspx

wheel base of cruiser generally are longer. So not suprising Phantom is no exception. I find maneuvering Phantom not difficult at all due to the low centre of gravity. I have never ride a TW200 before but I wouldn't be surprise it is more difficult for a lady rider. Unless she is as taller than a average man.

Posted

2006cornerstone, generally woman has got shorter upper torso, KR, SP and CBR are sports bike and the reach is further. In my opinion, lady rider on sports bike look kind of uncomfortable due to the low down stretch(for lady) position.

Phantom is a good choice if your concern is easy maintainance. Wave is economical and easy maintainance but don't look so cool on lady riders. If you are those dressy and fashionable type, you might want to consider scooter. I always feel that lady on vespa (not those old model) looks really cool.

Above are just my personal opinion. Hope it can be of some help.

i riding a phantom now all i ca say is phantom is comfortable and fuel consumption also affordable. maintenance also not ex.. change engine oil every 2000k can liao.. others if u unlucky to get a bike wit prob den hav to change like eg. chain, tyre etc. but main prob is rear heavy.. tend to skid easily during rainy days if u dun apply or cordinate pressure on both brakes properly.. but for long distance the comfy is there.. good luck..

oh boy, tend to skid? better not let my daddy know abt this!

but most of the bikes on rainy do skid easily, especially 'long-winded rainy' season like this...

i think it does a cauious/teachable heart to be willing to humble and learn from others and pick up the necessary skills.... attitude is the right word!

hmmm.... i think practice made perfect.... ya... listen to quite far bit and tried on a few too, sports doesn't reli 'tat comfortable' as i am travelling from one end of s'pore to the other end...

(north to east, east to west)

actually hor, if getting a 2nd hand better go motortiam or buy from adver and etc?

Cost wise, motor shop cost more (because of comission to pay the staff) but comes with warranty. Motorshop will also do the paper work for you. Problem is the insurance company they chose will be their own. Buying privately is cheaper and no warranty but word of trust that the bike is in really good condition. The paper work, you have to do yourself. Which means you get to choose your cheapest insurance company.

Best to go with a friend to check out the bike, whether from shop or private dealer.

new 1st hand cbr - $4.9k otr.

I read an article abt a doctor in A&E who saw alot of pple coming in there cause of bike accident. den he said "when we choose what is our riding gear, we choose the one that we should wear when we have an accident, not what occasion are we going". a nice saying but i nv actually listen to it. lol

Any bikes if brake not applied properly will also skid. Phantom tend to skid? I use to own one but never had that problem. Newbie (like I once was) tend to apply both brake with equal pressure, this has got the risk of too much rear brake and will definately skid especially during emergency and when too KanCheong. Remember main stopping power comes from front brake. I only tap lightly on the rear to the point the rear brake bite and follow through simultaneously with the front. Note of course that too sudden and too much front will cause the bike to do a stoppie, or worst an endo.

The good thing about this forum is that you can go to discussion group of various bike type and you will definately find someone selling their bike. The advantage? Someone might know the seller and will be able to give you proper advise. e.g. if previous owner take care of bike, accident history if any etc. The main advantage is that it will also cost cheaper than bike shop. That is how I benefitted from Singaporebikes.com

dear all, juz wish to sincerely appreciate for all your contribution~

will not only hear, but will choose to listen.... as ultimately i'll be the one who benefit yo~ (the diff of "hear" is one ear in, the other out, but listening, means using my heart and seriously take note of wat had been said, and willingness to change if wrong)

To BenSim: actually, i am definitely getting a bike, my dad knows that once i made the decision, nobody can change it, but frankly hor, i am still undecisive abt which one to have... so it is reli okie, no need to wait for me (i scare by that time i have forgotten abt this already, then delay your deal, not good mah)

To Ngleo: sincerely appreciate that you take the time and effort explain to me. i know many things hor, type out via words like this is not clear, especially riding bikes, on its skills and etc, but still appreciate it!

To RollingMao: Bike production, yah, i tried calling them this late afternoon, and they told me a new phantom is $5.3k.... tat's abit too steep, i tin (if i reli want) i better get a 2nd hand (not too many owners) especially now cars are quite dirt cheap, many (especially this raining season+ those not able to committ financially in long term especially in road tax and etc) might be thinking of giving up bike - especially those real young/immature ones after the passion and zeal subside already, they might not want already..... btw, anymore to suggest? how abt Mah or Ah koon? while going thru the past advices from our seniors, seems like these 2 quite steady too....

so~ for me, i am quite a slow coach, but slow and steady wins the race mah, i muz tin long-term committment/responsibility leh.... so slowly slowly lah~ don't want cheong, as often will make mistakes tat i will regret one....
