Hey guys, time for another update ! This ought to keep busy those of you who are bored :D

 

Sorry not very active here, I spend a lot of time reading guides, RR on other motorcycle forums, asking questions and thinking this whole thing through with everyday discovering new places I want to ride to during this journey.

I'm getting to that sweet point where you kinda think it's enough preparation and can't wait to hit the road ! :)

 

The Visas:

I'll list below the visas needs, "Fr" means for my French passport, and "SG" means, well you know :D

 

Malaysia:

 

FR: No visa, stamp valid for 90 days

SG: No visa

Thailand:

 

Fr & Sg - Entry stamp 15 days for arrival by land

-> Not an issue to get in, I can have a visa at the border, I have to produce my bike's ownership & registration papers, as well as purchase insurance for the bike. I also have to make sure I get a multi-entry visa: we're going into Thailand from Malaysia, then back from Myanmar, then again later from Cambodia.

 

 

Myanmar:

 

All foreigners, including SG-reans, are required to get a Tourist visa, valid 3 months. Visa costs SGD 35

-> I need a guide to cross the border - Visa can be given on arrival, not sure if insurance is needed since I will probably be in and out in max 2 days (most likely the same day seeing that riding in Myanmar is more difficult than riding on Jupiter). Getting out and back into Thailand should be easy. No idea what is needed for the bike, but that's what the guide is here for. He should take care of everything. I was unable to contact the one I was referred to (voicemail) so will keep trying.

 

 

Laos :

 

Fr - Visa on arrival (1 photo, US$35 for European countries)

Sg - free entry for 15 days (but sometimes charged!)

-> Getting in from Thailand requires to choose the right border crossings. Some refuse motorcycles coming from Thailand. Visa on arrival seems pretty straight forward, not sure about the bike insurance, I have to research it.

 

 

Vietnam:

 

Sg - No visa for under 30 days

Fr - Recommended to apply at embassy US$25 + 2 photos (Turned out it's more than that, see below)

This is the pain in the neck for this trip. I went to the Vietnam embassy today, and it is clear now that the guide I need to cross the border is mostly to help settle the bike matters: you can't get a non-Vietnamese bike into Vietnam without a vehicle import permit said the embassy's official. Even if you plan just to use your vehicle for a short period of time or holidays, you still need an import permit.

 

The embassy doesn't deliver those, and asked me to approach a travel agent who will take care of the paperwork for me.

They didn't have guides or agents to recommend, and asked me to check http://www.vietnamtourism.com for a list of agents (website by the Vietnam Tourism Association).

 

The embassy here can however deliver me a visa, but at a bit higher price than if I get it on arrival: here it's $86 SGD. If you want your visa on arrival, it's a two step process: 1. Get a visa application approval. That's what the "guide" or travel agency does for you. It costs 25-30 SGD. Armed with the copy of the visa approval confirmation sends back to you by the travel agent, you can then show up at the border and get your visa, after paying another 25-30 SGD.

 

I have no idea how much the bike's import permit costs, I'll surf forums and ask the question to figure it out. I suspect the guide at the border is also here to serve translation purposes, but we'll see. I still have no clue what the USD 600 the guide is asking me for are supposed to cover, the way i see it, less than a USD 150 (and I'm generous) are for the paperwork, and seeing the strength of the US dollar vs the local currency, it's a small fortune the guide is asking me to pay which doesn't make sense to me. (Bare with me folks, I'm trying to find reasons to not pay the damn thing and still get in.. doesn't look good though !)

 

 

Cambodia:

 

Sg - exempt, for 30 days

Fr - $36 tourist visa + 2 photos * Visa valid for one entry only

-> I tried today to go the Cambodia's Embassy in Singapore. I tried really hard, checking their address on Orchard and then on Beach Road. But the Embassy disappeared. The ghost embassy we call it now. If any of you has any information where the Cambodia embassy is hidden in Singapore, let me know, because their website sure doesn't seem to know.. :D

 

I'm not too worried about Cambodia though because they deliver Visa on arrival, and I kinda hope that after crossing 5 countries, the last one won't be too hard to convince to let me finish my trip. Unsure if a bike insurance is needed, but I suspect it is.

Well, fingers crossed, I did read from other riders that border crossing in any of these countries is never a sure thing so we'll see..

 

 

The Gear:

 

Paid Daiso a visit to get something to pack our clothes and personal stuff in the saddle bags, so they're not all mixed with the rest of the gear. Ended settling for a washing net, those of you who are laundry kings & queens (not the money type, the water one) know what I'm talking about:

This will be perfect to keep the clothes together and easy to access. The rest of the gear that will go in the saddle bags includes footwear, toiletries, maps, chargers, you know, the essentials :p

 

I also found at the magic store a pouch that I will use as a tool bag. It will host the Pulsar's kit, and additional wrenches and whatnot that I pray I'll never have to use (OK I secretly hope the bike will have a problem and that I will be able to fix it by myself in the middle of nowhere in a superhero way and continue riding thinking about the awesome blog post that'll make..)

 

Next shopping stop for the gear was the Army Market on Beach Road, to get some straps for the saddle bags, just to secure them more tightly to the rack. This is to anticipate the potholes and all joyful bumps I'm sure I'll have to ride through.

You remember I talked to you about Malaria and about how I am considering playing the fierce Ang Moh and go into this adventure without taking Anti-Malaria pills. Well, while I haven't decided yet what to do about that, the mosquito net is not an option. Fierce but not completely suicidal, thank you very much. It's very light, easy to fold and pack. We are still unsure about how to set it up though: I was thinking of a line of cord going from one wall of the room to the other, and the net would hang on it, covering the bed (or the mattress or whatever there is to sleep on). The problem is how to fix the cord to the walls. Tried some suction cups with hooks, but with the paint on the wall it's not staying in place. If you have any suggestions, let me hear'em :)

 

There wouldn't be no gear without the generous donators that have approached me and volunteered their stuff as a loan for the trip. Some of them are in this very group, and I thank them again for spontaneously wanting to support me in this adventure by lending me things. Thank you ! :thumb:

Stay tuned, it's coming very soon, we are now putting the content we typed on simple notepad / word documents, into proper blog posts. We also finished testing the iPhone app we'll be using to record and track our daily rides, and it's giving very nice results :o.

 

I decided to advertise on the website to generate some income to hopefully pay for its hosting. But for SBT members, if you want to advertise your site or services, please feel free to contact me, I'll be happy to support you by giving you some ad space for free.

 

To be able to update the website regularly as we travel, but more importantly to be able to stay in touch with family & friends, we'll be purchasing a 3G sim card in every country we travel through. If you have any experience or info on 3G prepaid card plans, ideally with a micro-sim, for any of the above countries except Malaysia (already have it), feel free to comment !

 

Also, I was wondering if any of you ever used a USB modem that works with a 3G sim card ? I don;t know much about it, never used one, but that would be handy to surf the net on the laptop instead of the iPhone. I know I can turn the latter into a wifi spot, but it's probably faster and better for the battery to use a USB modem.

 

Along with the website, a Facebook page (maybe an account too) and a Twitter account will be created for this trip so make sure you add those to your own accounts to follow the trip :)

hi all, me decided to go um for order my p200 tomorrow. yeah thanks for the coe fall twice in tis month. r really the rear brake wil failure working went raining day? really want to change the rear stock tyre. any recommend wat type and size of the rear tyre for singapore and malaysia road? which cheap compare to tis country?

O'ren , Vietnam entry is a problem. Last time I read on some forum that a guy wanted to ride through the country but he ended up leaving his bike and renting a little kup. I think they might have some permit requirements if you wish to ride a bike bigger than 150cc.

All entries are a "problem" with a vehicle that's not registered in the country visited.. Anywhere in the world. And especially in S.E.A, it seems to be very very difficult, mostly because the information given by the official sources is inaccurate at best, usually nonexistent.

 

For Vietnam, Singaporeans riders have been there with their bike not long ago (last month, and the month before). It is yes difficult (read pricey) but not impossible.

 

After reading much about bikes riding into Vietnam, it is now clear that you need some paperwork done before hand for the bike and a lot of money for the guide/travel agent. Thais get in Vietnam fairly easily with big bikes (600cc and above), and people who get rejected at the border often: don't own the bike they are riding (rental), own the bike but can't produce all the bike's papers, or get in through border crossings known to be more difficult for bikes, or most of the time, just expect to get entry just by showing up :slapforehead:

 

The link you posted is a sort of a scammy website, intended to promote a product they want you to buy, so I would take that info with a cup of salt.

 

Gt-Rider forums has much more accurate and current info, plus almost live testimonials by riders about their trip into Vietnam.

 

Anyway, this is like I said the main concern for me and the biggest challenge. And this is what will decide my departure date, I want to take off from Singapore knowing that all the paperwork for Vietnam and Myanmar are in order. For the other countries, it seems more straight forward.. but who knows..

maybe u can consider the p180, styling wise is similar(except for the 3d logo on the tank which looks less nice, and the aluminium exhaust on P200) but has clipon handle bars and larger front forks, better fuel economy and is cheaper. The P200 is an old 2006 model.

rear drum brakes are useless in my opinion, even in dry weather to the point that i dont even use them. Front tyres are just as if not more important. my old P180 ug3 actually skidded in on the fronts when i braked at higher speeds during wet weather...

Hi and welcome to SBT,

The Pulsar rear brakes aren't the best feature of the bike. You can't count on them like a Ducati can count on its Brembos. But that doesn't mean that they will "fail" if it rains ! It means your riding style will adapt to the bike. You'll naturally learn to break to get the best result with the speed you're traveling at.

 

Tyres: Please change the tyres as soon as possible. I don;t know which are the cheapest, I hear Shinko might be, check them out. Anything will be better than the stock ones - I think only guys from India who rode a Pulsar in India are able to ride with the stock tyres in Singapore and not skid/fall every now and then :cheeky:. You can also wait until your first fall in the carpark or on the road to decide to change them, up to you. Change BOTH tyres, not just the rear one.

Size of the tyres, just get something close to the stock tyre or a tiny bit bigger - if you want to change the size by a bigger size, know that this will affect your FC, and might need sprocket adjustment to match the change.

SG and MY have two very different types of roads, so my advice is pick street tyres, meant for SG roads since this is where you'll ride more often I suppose.

been there today, there's no embassy, the phone/fax numbers don't work..

I looked it up again on the net and found an address on Beach Road, but there too, there was not embassy :faint:

It means your riding style will adapt to the bike. You'll naturally learn to break to get the best result with the speed you're traveling at.

 

Tyres: Please change the tyres as soon as possible. I don;t know which are the cheapest, I hear Shinko might be, check them out. Anything will be better than the stock ones - I think only guys from India who rode a Pulsar in India are able to ride with the stock tyres in Singapore and not skid/fall every now and then :cheeky:. You can also wait until your first fall in the carpark or on the road to decide to change them, up to you. Change BOTH tyres, not just the rear one.

Size of the tyres, just get something close to the stock tyre or a tiny bit bigger - if you want to change the size by a bigger size, know that this will affect your FC, and might need sprocket adjustment to match the change.

SG and MY have two very different types of roads, so my advice is pick street tyres, meant for SG roads since this is where you'll ride more often I suppose.

O'ren: why not try bunge cords to hold your saddle bags?

Because it seems to me they are less reliable than straps. I've been using bungee cords a lot before I got the rack and it does a good job, but it's not really good to fix a saddle bag closer to the rack.

I was thinking a strap will keep the saddle bag close to the frame of the rack and also provide support and tighten the whole thing. Bungees I thought would just move with the bag if there are massive bumps or shakes.. I don't know... I feel like I can tighten the straps easily and use them as a secure way to keep the bags very close to the rack.
