SingTel ropes iPhone distro in Singapore, and its subsidaries in India, Australia, and Philippines

SAN FRANCISCO / SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Apple Inc (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) has signed deals to bring the iPhone to four Asian countries later this year, which should help the company surpass its sales goal of 10 million units by the end of 2008.

Agreements with Singapore's Singapore Telecommunications Ltd (STEL.SI: Quote, Profile, Research) and three of its affiliates will bring the iPhone to Singapore, India, the Philippines and Australia, SingTel and Apple said.

Bharti Airtel Ltd (BRTI.BO: Quote, Profile, Research), India's top mobile operator, will carry the iPhone in the world's fastest-growing wireless market, which already has more than 260 million mobile users. SingTel owns more than 30 percent of Bharti Airtel.

SingTel unit Optus will offer the iPhone in Australia, and Globe Telecom (GLO.PS: Quote, Profile, Research) will be the Philippine partner. Globe Telecom is owned by SingTel and domestic conglomerate Ayala Corp (AC.PS: Quote, Profile, Research).

An Apple spokeswoman said the iPhone would make its debut in those countries "later this year," and declined to comment on plans to bring the iPhone to Japan and China.

In its quarter ended March 31, the company sold 1.7 million of the devices, which combine a mobile phone, iPod media player and Web surfing; Apple's goal is to sell 10 million iPhones by year's end.

A flurry of deals with European partners last week prompted American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu to raise his profit estimates for Apple on Monday, saying he expected 2008 iPhone sales of 11 million units, up from his previous forecast of 7 million units.

"IPhone is a relatively minor contributor today at only 2-3 percent of revenue, but we believe it has the potential to become a very significant driver over the next 2-5 years," Wu wrote.

Several hints, including the weird phenomenon of dwindling iPhone stock in the US and UK has prompted people to speculate that there may be a new iPhone (possibly one with 3G?) to be released. As to whether there will be a 3G iPhone, and speculative thereafter, on whether SingTel will be getting such a phone, remains a mystery.

I thought everyone who wants an iPhone already has one from the US?

Haha. Starhub and M1 users will use cracked phones, like they do now.

my gf also just received her iphone, she bought it direct from Apple. Phone + accessories (casing, cover etc) + shipping = $690. Unlocking of the phone is done by herself...so its free.

Long before your time... in the northern province of Singapore... there was this biker call one_rider...

that's really reasonable. i was gonna ask y friend to get it from me from the states. it's abt US500. factor in currency exchange and breaking fee, it'll be about $700 too. could i order from you as well? you could download all the external software for caller ID and all that too right?

Hi I am interested in purchasing the iPhone. Any veteran users can advise what should I look out for? Is it as dodgy as PDA phones? I'm currently using an Atom Life but it always hangs while my friend's is perfectly fine, so I'm just worried the iPhone might pose the same problem

I don't know, don't ask me.

Oh no no no....the iPhone 3G is 1mm thicker than the current iPhone.

And GPS aficionados, you're going to drool over the iPhone's ability to do map pinpointing. Cuz it has GPS built-in as well.

It is even smarter in that it can also switch to WiFi or GPRS to take over the map pinpointing too.
