I read somewhere that we should try to use the lowest octane petrol that the manual recommends (eg pump RON 92 if your engine can run on 87 and above).

Reason being the lower the number, the easier and faster it burns and hence the cleaner will be your engine. Higher octane fuel burns slower, and may have carbon buildup in the engine if not combusted completely.

Of course we should not use an octane level that is lower than what the manual calls for, else premature combustion will cause knocking.

Any thoughts on this?

Just follow your manufacturer recommendation any higher is a waste of money.....Even the lowest grade cost more than $2....We will be heading towards $2.50 year end and next year $3.......

i rode a v-strom 1k The OM wrote octane 89...

I experiment and have much better mileage using octane 92 infact the higher the octane the porrer the mileage

I only know higher octane resist knocking especially those with higher compression engine....Even my R6 with 12.4:1 compression required Ron 95. The latest R6 with 13.1:1 compression should be using Ron95 as well correct mi if I was wrong....

So if your bike is less than 12:1 I guess is all right to use Ron92..

I think when the price reaches $3 a litre, nobody will bother asking whether they should use Ron 92 petrol :D :D :D

It doesn't make any difference whether a motorcyclist has the right-of-way or not, the rider is the one most likely to get hurt.

my rule of thumb is...

compression ratio more than 10..95 octance or higher..lessthan 10 ..92octance should be ok..

so those high compression engines..if cna use lower octane without knocking..u have a bonus choice..:cheer:

Ron 92 wil get more mileage, less power. More octane than tat, vice versa.

Why would anyone challenge the engine builder by self introducing your own recommendations instead of following what the builder prescribed?

Follow what the manufacturer recommends and you are safe. Go lower than that, over long periods risk engine damage. It will be too lengthy if I were to go into technical details.

If the fuel prices are a burden that you have to compromise what you ought to do, then don't ride/drive. Take the public transport.

Fuel price would not not lowed that's for sure....In fact i am welcoming $3 per liter to come cos I dont like crowded roads...

The era of cheap fuel is gone....I hope after this the roads would be less crowded and I can enjoy more riding....

For the time being just pump want even that fit your budget

this is a very tricky question....

a lower octane gives better mileage. a higher octane protects your engine better. it's a matter of you wanna feel good now, or later?

a very good method is to see your bike model. if you're riding a wave or spark or "available in malaysian" bikes, just go and use 92. cuz if your bike spoil, go in and change the whole engine block (worst case scenario - doubt it will easily happen) also cost SGD$200 only.

if you're a super4 or class2 biker, get 98. should be enough to protect your engine.

but if you really stuck, go with 95. although i must admit personally that 95 feels more like a 92, rather than a 98.

v-power? forget it. totally not worth it.

Can I know why a higher octane fuel will protect the engine? Is it because of the additives they add into the petrol? As far as I know a higher octane just means that it is harder to ignite, whereas a lower octane petrol is easier to ignite and burn.

Agreed! High fuel prices will hurt drivers more than riders. Let there be fewer cars on the roads. Raise the ERP to $10 per entry and i'm sure u'll see a lot less congestion. $2 don't quite cut it. People whine but its still congested. Let it rise to the ceiling and we shall have less traffic

P-plate should be an attitude to safety and riding. There's always more to learn.

If your bike manufacturer specify at least 91, pumping 98 will NOT give you power gain, better mileage or watsoever "extra engine protection".

Given a higher octane fuel such as 98, a low compression (and perhaps lower operating temperature) engine may not even efficiently combust higher octane fuel.

End up... more polluted emissions, less smoother ride, lower mileage and perhaps even additional carbon deposits.

Good morning MC, i think i have the same issue, i pumped a tank of the lower grade petrol at JB the other day, ride feels smoother at lower revs and when i went to refill, i was shocked that i pumped 18+ Litres only, i was expecting 19-20+ Litres. :thumb:
