GPS give u confident.....

so u can relax and look around instate of have to keep thinking u r on the right track anot.........

and not everyone have good sense of direction...

but map will help u when gps fail....

I live by GPS. All these years, from the very beginning, when there was no proper maps in the gps, I travel by saving the tracks. Then Now, the maps are wonderful and never once I got lost. In fact, GPS saves plenty of time for us especially when travelling to Thailand. No more Paper GPS(maps).

Many may say, it is expensive thats y use maps. GPS is a good investment and presently, they get better and mappers updates the maps in malsingmaps.com very often.

If kiasu that the GPS fails (mine never did all these years) can afford buy a very cheap basic set as a standby.

My opinion: NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT

If GPS wasn't so expensive I would have given it a try. The good ol way's been fine for me. Sometimes when I don't know where I am I just keep riding on. Thats my way, works most of the time :deal:

P-plate should be an attitude to safety and riding. There's always more to learn.

I belief this is the same situation like when the type writter was being replaced by the PC & printer or film camera being replaced by the digital camera.

People swear by their old thrusty type writter or film camera until the day they tried out the new technology and discovered what they are missing and never turn back since. :D

GPS in the past are still quite "crude" showing only co-ordinates or at most a simple road map with nothing much on it. The only thing one can get out of it is the knowledge of where the hell exactly we are in that country and which direction we are heading, that's all. But that is still better than not knowing where one is, when one is lost and there is not a single road sign around. Don't laugh, there are lots of kampong places in Malaysia without road sign.

But not anymore, GPS now are so advance and the satellite receiver are so sensitive and they have build in navigation system to calculate the "Shortest distance" or "Fastest time" to guide the user to his destination with voice command. The user only needs to key in exactly where he wants to go and glance at the GPS map once in a while to counter check while being guided by the voice. It is that simple and fool proof. If for any reason the user over shoot a turn, the GPS will immediately re-calculate the route and continue to guide the user back on track.

I never turn back to other means of navigation after using GPS and thinks that my money spend on this gadget is worth every cents.

It doesn't make any difference whether a motorcyclist has the right-of-way or not, the rider is the one most likely to get hurt.

Where do you guys get paper map for Malaysia?

You can also print out quite detail maps from Google maps and it is almost free :cheeky:

Well said bro. Agree with you all the way.:thumb:

Before I got my gps, I relied on hard copy maps, compass, road signs and locals for directions. I must say it work pretty well in non-cities places where there aren't so many roads. For busy cities, I think it's cumbersome and probably dangerous to keep stopping to take out your maps, confirm directions and maybe ask the locals for directions.

I once thought that a tankbag with a transparent compartment would solve the problem. I placed the map in the compartment for easy reference. But because the tankbag is angled, I still have to take out my compass very often. And the magnets of my tankbag aren't strong enough for bumpy tracks. It came off a couple of times before I gave up and stuffed it into my main pack.

So I bought a garmin legend cx. But I never had the chance to fully make use of it as I couldn't find detailed and free maps for the countries I visited. All along, I'm using the basic world map that came with the gps. For countries like Laos and Cambodia, all it shows are a few highways which aren't very accurate. In the end, I got to stick with my hard copy maps, compass and road signs. But it's alright as these countries are easy to navigate around. I can't imagine doing so in a place like Singapore. But then, who would tour a busy modern city on a motorcycle?

But since I already bought the gps, I continued to mount it on my motorcycle. And I am glad I did. With the gps, I can easily read the time, direction I am traveling in, altitude, create waypoints and tracks to share with others. Maybe do some geocaching if I want.

i also tried putting compass in transparent compartment of my tankbag... guess wat, it went hey wire!! the magnets on the tankbag are interfering the compass readings.

Me prefer the old fashion way of maps + compass. Gets the brain thinking n functioning. If lost direction or unsure, break the ice by asking the locals of that foreign country. In worse case senario, join the F@#K-R-WE tribe. :shades:
