Sorry about the long break folks, I was seriously down and out for a really bad case of flu…

Ok. This is what some of you are waiting for. Fuel consumption. The FC was calculated to be 15.3 km/l for my first tank refill. This value should be pretty normal for short distance travel and frequent start/stop with no highway use. The fuel gauge consists of six LCD bars with the last bar, if blinking, indicating reserve and is hopelessly non-linear. The first two bars disappear for every 40 km per bar or so, then for the next few km, the third and fourth bar simultaneously disappear. And it takes another 80 km just for the fifth bar to go. Another 15 km later, the last bar starts to blink. From full tank to reserve, the distance traveled is around 175 km. Hopefully, with constant highway use and more mileage to the engine, 250 km can be achieved between fill ups. We’ll see…

Welcome back!

FC seems to be bad especially when this is not a "huge" bike. My initial thoughts was that the FC should be around 18km/l, then it will be good. Nevertheless, please post your FC when u have chance to hit the highway. Meanwhile enjoy the ride :cheeky:

I think your bike is still new so have to let it break in for a confirm FC. Takes 2 months..... :D

Yeah... actually I thought the FC was not that good but then thinking back, the bike has more than its fair share of idling, slow test riding around carparks given to neighbours, colleagues and people interested in hearing what it sounds like... all of this during the first tankful...

Wonder what the comsumption figure are like when the run-in period is over? Any report on that.

Till now, I have not seen it on the road yet. Must be very rare, just like white tiger.

Think he is either working or studying in NTU. Always c his bike at the carpark (always the same slot) near the aviation engr faculty. Mayb i leave a post-it pad on his bike to ask him to reply in SBF on the FC??

saw this @ KFC kallang today. It's a real beauty! http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f230/em_cycles/IMG_0083.jpg

Yes, that's my bike. I was there having lunch. Sorry, didn't log on for some time. Being busy shifting house... still not settle yet... sigh...

And yes, the one you all saw at NTU is the same bike... I work there...

As for FC, it is still not amazing after running in... getting about 16 km/l average... probably due to the ultra short distance for my daily commuting... round trip of 8+ kms.... but it did went up to 18 km/l once I hit the expressways... probably higher if I went up North...

So far there is no problem encountered... will give another writeup once I have the time...

Wonderful dude. :) its a classic. Do keep us informed and happy shifting house. I had my fair shares of shifting 4 house last year and an office. DAMN SHAQ!

You are damn right. I told myself this is the last house I'm going to stay until I retire... went to bed and knock off in ten seconds flat!!!...

The next write up will be ready soon...

Yeah... I told Looi's motor not to install the IU... but his mechanic already did... so I just leave it for the time being... planning to remove it soon...

Honda DN-01 (6 months later…)

Sorry for the long break… quite busy at work and couple with moving house… man… damn tired, both physically and mentally too…

Anyway, continuing with the review… a little bit about maintenance… went for the 1000 kms service sometime back… need to change two oil filters… one for the engine and another for the transmission… they both use the same type of oil and a common sump… so changing oil is as easy as any other bike… changing the transmission oil filter is a bit troublesome though… need to remove some fairings and engine covers… total amount of oil used is about 3.3 litres…

Ok, the following is what I have experienced with the bike so far… nothing very serious… more of operational quirkiness…

The Good

Well, as expected when I made the decision to get this bike… it is very easy to handle, just like a scooter, no need to worry about whether you are in the right gear in any situation, and you can focus more on the scenery and other hazards… very low maintenance required, just add fuel, check tire pressure and wash every week or so… starts first time, every time… even after 6 months, people still stares and ask me what bike I’m riding…

The Bad

You cannot coast on this bike… unlike bikes with manual clutch, whereby you can pull in the clutch and coast down hill… selecting neutral on this bike is possible only when the bike is stationary… of course, you can force it into neutral by switching off the engine, but not recommended…

You also cannot short shift the transmission… that is to say, change to the highest ‘gear’ while still maintaining a low speed, so as to maximize fuel economy… top ‘gear’ or the 6th ratio can only be engaged when the speed is 80 km/h or higher… given my daily commute, the highest ‘gear’ the bike will reach is 5th or maybe even 4th only…

The Ugly

Now comes the worst part so far… was caught by surprise of the behavior of the bike while going down hill… and I manage to replicate it several times… talk to the mechanic about it and he says it is normal for all bikes with automatic transmissions, is it?.... I wonder?...

Here’s what happen… going uphill as per normal, apply throttle… reaching the top, shuts the throttle, bike continue to go over the crest and starts to descent… then all of a sudden, the bike reduces speed abruptly, it feels like the engine went dead… the second time it happens, I was carrying my wife pillion, and her helmet crashes into the back of mine, she thought that I was applying emergency brake!...

After analyzing the above situation, I can only deduced that once I shuts the throttle on the down slope, the engine goes to idling speed but the bike is still traveling quite fast, so the transmission must have double or even triple down shifts to cause the very sudden deceleration…

After experiencing this for a few times, I have learnt to control the throttle all the way from going uphill to downhill and not to shut off the throttle totally, unless you need to come to a complete stop… maybe this is one of the bug that needs to iron out…

So much for now, until next time, ride safe…

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm abt the ugly hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Its really puzzling. Could anyone with a scooter please tell us something? Cos i never rode a scooter before and the mech claim that auto transmit is like this which hmmm not very smooth. rather odd...

Thanks for the nice write up dude. And you are very frank i like that.

the auto transmission in most scooters is CVT-based unlike the DN-01's transmission, therefore its not really that similar. scooters don't downshift down the slope, and the downshifting is pretty linear ie. no jerking so you don't 'feel' the downshifting.

After reading the review of the DN-01 in USA, I think the problem I encountered is due to downshifting and compression braking during down slope...

regarding the Ugly part, i used to ride silverwing. less than 6 mths though. whenever i was gg downslope, the bike will freewheel when the engine speed is less than 2500rpm. hence requires to use front+rear brakes. no engine brake. that was when my brakes was cooked when gg downhill from Gunung Brinchang in Cameron.
