All current generation GPS is able to provide "turn-by-turn" during navigation.

All standalone GPS use pre-loaded map whereas Iphone uses goggle map from the internet. There is no recurring charges using map on a standalone GPS.

On an Iphone, you need an internet connection, and incur data charges. In Singapore, on an Iphone plan, your data charges may be capped but once you are overseas, you have to know your overseas data charges which can be extremely painful to the wallet.

A great feature on the Iphone is the Assisted GPS (AGPS) feature which uses the phone network to derive your location should the satellite signal becomes weak. This is useful in an urban buildup area with many tall buildings and LRT tracks running everywhere, such as in KL.

:)

Correction, iPhone turn by turn GPS apps like tomtom or sygic do not require data/internet connection (as i have tested that out myself) and it is just as accurate without the AGPS you mentioned because the maps are pre-loaded too. so you can be in sg or go overseas, turn off data and it still works (i suppose in this mode the iPhone GPS works like any other standalone GPS, w/o the AGPS)

thou i believe the maps on iphone are not updated as frequently as those standalone when u said the latter are updated weekly (so minus point for iphone).

those that requires data or internet connection is the native map app by google but it is not a true turn by turn gps as there is no real time voice assistant.

so correct me if i am wrong because i am speaking from my personal experience.

i just bought the marbella m550 plus

this is my review for the day ...

pros

- easy to understand so can say user friendly

- can play mp3 etc

- large screen , 4.3''

- very light weight compare to garmin nuvi 255 or is it 205

- maps using SLA mapking and malsingmaps ! ( basicly i guess can still dl the free third party maps that garmin use. not too sure about this)

- has a headphone jack !

Cons

- no proper mounting dedicated for bike so i have to mod the ram mount ... now very secure .

- damn the speaker ! i guess even at max inside in the car it's still not loud enough !

- from a garmin user to a marbella , need to get use to the navigation arrows ... not as straight foward like garmins

- buttons , switch and stylus looks cheap .

- mp3 can't be played together when in navigation/gps mode . damn this sucks ...

- was told to charge the unit for 8 hrs b4 using it but to my amazement , it only comes with ciggarate charger ! the salesman must be kidding . who the hell wanna let the car/bike running for 8 hours !!!!

- the mount was said to be made in germany . just imho , even in car if there was a big bump on the rd it will surely came off ...

basicly i still like it ... it still serve me and get me to my location.

wads so good abt that Tibo anyway?

I'm running Tele Atlas map on my HTC (FOC during last June IT Show), i like the simple & well detail map in it (no fancy 3D buildings or landmarks). To mi, i want to be able to understand the map within a short glance.

Perviously, i tried Mapking on my HTC, it's kinda hard to focus on riding. I wanna get the Garmin but i have to pay for the SG & MY Tele Atlas map.

The onli downside on the TIBO, well u've to pay for the updates after the 1st yr. As long as i find my current ones are accurate, i dun have to pay since i dun intend to go back.

Well, to each his own.

The value of a good GPS cannot be measured by the price only. my $950 garmin zumos had allowed me to bring alot of people out for bike trips safely! I made new friends and had explored new places! ^_^

Hi LollyPop,

I felt that whether you want 3D or not, its really up to your pleasure. We can actually set this under the settings.

Ive not tried Tele Atlas maps b4 on my Garmin. Since you have rave reviews about it, maybe i will try find out what it is one of these days.

I thought the deal is off, because TomTom is buying over Tele Atlas, so Garmin is sticking to NAVTEQ

how long can a garmin gps last if its fully charge?

depends on model, environment conditions, maps loaded, screen brightness and volume level.

typically, when brand new, at least 2.5hrs.

Most people go through life following the crowd.

Others think for themselves.

They go their own way.

Yeah that's bcos it's 100% designed for bikers. For starters it's waterproof, is designed to be operated while wearing gloves (ie larger buttons) and is designed so that it can be read much better under glaring light (again unlike car GPS).

Personally I have a car Nuvi GPS. Once I go touring I will get a weatherproof Ram mount + power cable. Certainly not as stylo but will do the job.
