Hi guys, im currently still in the process of acquiring my 2B license. Can someone inform me how do i go around buying a bike -eg. Budget, admistrative, insurance, etc?

I am quite interested in the CBR150 as it seems to be a good sport/commuter mix.

Would like something that is decent enough to head down the track to have fun. Recommendations for other bikes welcomed.

However i do not have the slightest idea how COE, insurance and such work. Can someone give me an idea/outline of how much do i need to fork out? Is it better to pay full cash or inst.?

Sorry for so many qns but i think u can help me out with these first;

Price of CBR150 1st/2nd hand - ???

Estimated $$ for 18yr old New rider-no exp - ???

Other costs to get started running on the rd - ???

Thanks for helping a totally 'lost' noob.:thumb:

Hi... I am new as well...

Well... below are some suggestions:

1. First and Most Important thing is to ask yourself - What is your budget?

2. Once you know your budget, then you can decide what bike you want and how to pay it...

3. If your budget is big enough, pay in full... cos paying by instalments incur interest...

4. If your budget is big enough, buy a brand new bike...

5. When you buy a bike, there are 2 things that you need to get your bike on the road i.e. insurance and road tax.

6. Insurance comes with Comprehensive, Fire and Theft and Third Party.

7. If your budget is big enough, get Comprehensive... if not, get Fire and Theft.

8. Most of the other admin will be sorted out be the sales agent and do feel free to ask the sales agent any queries you have...

9. For your budget to be big enough, this means you should have about $10,000 for it.

10. Price of 2nd hand bike is dependent of the year of production... the older the bike, the cheaper...

11. Other costs that you need to consider is to get a good helmet, glove, raincoat, jacket...

12. All the above is just my opinion and it is never the complete answer...

Hey, thanks for your quick response! For your suggestion 9. I dont think it's very constructive to have 10k dumped for a bike like that? Im looking to spending up to 6K for a new cbr and 4k for used. Is it enough? How much does 3rd Party cost roughly for my scenario? And i do have helmet, gloves raincoat etc which i use for my lessons.

if u go to the track with that bike..i think you will cause a lot of accidents...

people will laugh!

it looks like a sports bike..but its performance is nothing like it..

to get the bike on the road...you will obviously need the bike...a COE, insurance & road tax...

the road tax is $80 per year...

not sure about the insurance..

If you really really want to go track get a proper sportsbike..The CBR150 is more a commuter's bike with the outlook of a sportsbike..As for fast kup cais..They're 2 stroke..2 stroke 2B bikes are alot "stronger" than 4 stroke 2B bikes..The intention for 4 stroke 2B bikes is for good fuel consumption..

As for getting a 2nd hand CBR150..It might be a little difficult as its quite a new bike..Prolly the one you see at motortiams are those that have been involved in accidents..Which will result in faulty parts..And then you need to fork out more to restore it back to "good" working condition..

And as for how to get a bike once you get your licence..Best way is to go around with a friend who knows about bikes more than you do..He can help you test the bike..Tell you if the condition is still good..What needs to be changed and if its worth buying..Also the motortiam won't be able to cheat you with their glib tongue..If you've got the finance get it paid in cash of not by instalment will do..But it will cost a little bit more due to interests..

As for rd tax..Can also pay for half a year..But one time pay for one year saves you the trouble of doing it twice..

I have tried to see things from your point of view..But no matter how hard I try..Or what I do..I just can't get my head that far up my butt..

Oh... okok... I dont deny the fact that small cc 2strokes are more powerful then 4strokes. Just inspired by those thai Cbr riders at PG. Problem is 2stroke sportbikes only haf old ones like nsr krr tzm, apart from mito and rs125. And i dont have friends who Ride, most of them drive. Some of them are also taking 2b, so pretty much nobody whom i can trust to bring along.

Anw i dont think i can find somebody who can tell me a guideline as to hw much i need? Thanks for your replies nevertheless.

Take your time, don't rush anything!

That is the most important advice. Rushing and buying on impulse almost always lead to regret.

CBR150 is a dressed-up commuter. The riding position, height of footrests, thin chassis and most importantly tyre profiles make it unsuitable for high speed cornering. The racing CBR150 that you speak of is probably highly modified to increase power output and improve stability. Nobody is going to laugh at you, but you compromise your own safety and the safety of others on track.

If you want a mix of commuting and track, I suggest you take the Honda NSR150SP. Performance wise, it has neutral steering and decent power. Many aftermarket parts are available, and almost any mechanic on the island can fix it. Some people argue that the KRR has higher top speed, but I assure you that you can never hit the top speed on track because there isn't enough space for you to accelerate to top.

For hardcore track riding, I suggest you take a '03+ Aprilia RS125 or Cagiva Mito 125. However, you have to look really hard to find ones that are in decent condition. They are expensive to maintain due to higher cost in parts. But they are built to be raced, and their handling is top class.

The bike price usually includes COE, you probably won't have to worry about it unless it is almost time to renew. Road tax is fixed by the capacity of the bike, so a RS125 will have the same road tax as a Mito.

At 18 years old, your insurance will be very high. There is no way around it. Shop around. Expect 3rd party + fire and theft insurance to be above $700 per year.

Hmmm.... thanks to all... after much searching here and there i chanced upon the mito. Wow, it looks damn sexy man... Anyone has got an idea how much is it? Is it advisable to save and pay in full cash or take loan? Im still a student. After looking at the mito im so tempted to go for it but i dont know if i can afford it financially.

Take your time..Best advice..I've seen people getting their bikes right after they pass TP..No joke..Scout around..Go different bike shops..Ask about any bike you are interested in..As for the Mito..Great bike but a little pricey..Find one that you're sure to be able to pay its instalments each month..Or else later kena repo or worst can go court (depends on bike shops)..Make sure its a worthy buy and you don't need to starve each day just to get it..:goodluck:

hi ben...my advise is if u r interested in 2b sportbikes...try reading n quiring those thread abt this type of bikes....u wud get a more detail ans to ur Qs.

As for insurance, base on ur age n experience...it wud definitely be expensive. Rd tax wise, as long its 200cc n below it wud b a fixed $80/per annum or $40 per 6 mth bt if its more than 10yrs, rd tax wud be raised by 10% every year, up till max 50% on its fifteen year if im nt wrong.

Juz remember 2 stroker has more maintenance than 4 stroker. European bikes like Aprilia n Cagiva parts also cost more than Japs bikes.

Take ur time looking for a bike. Find one tats is worth ur $$$ rather than its outlook n gave u headache soon after. U will love it in the end.

I have look around for some time, seems that 2b sportsbike only have about 5 choices? tzm, krr, nsr, rs125 and mito. Naturally rs and mito top for performance right? I think final decision will depend on my financial status at the point of buying. However, where can i find shops that sell mito and/or rs125? Is it only a few selected shops have or random also have? Anyone recommend a good place to view bikes of these category?

Help appreciated!

of course...everyone has their wants...

i also want a ferrari...

but i have to be practical...

so i strongly urge to plan your finances and make sure you have the means to pay for the bike...

and do take into consideration the petrol cost, parking & other miscalleneous cost like engine oil, tyres & repairs...

When I was 20, my 3rd party insurance for my SP was $547. 2nd party was supposed to be about $800. But that was a few years ago.

Close to that..3rd party should be 700-800..Insurance will be same whether bike is new or 2nd hand..

So i can buy 3rd party regardless of whether is it 1st or second hand bike? Other types of bike insurance will be cheaper i presume? Like naked, scooter, commuter? How much will scrambler insurance cost?

Thanks for being so patient.

Depends on the shop..Some shop will let you get third party if you're paying by instalments but your Parents will have to sign a liability form or somethin..

As for other motorbike insurance prices..Best way to find out is to go down to a bike shop and ask..

ben, according to ur profile..18 years old with no experience. applying for a 3rd party under mitsul will cost u ard s$357.00. whereas for a 1st party it will cost ard $800.

the road tax for ur bike will cost approx $80.00 for a year. following which,if u wish to extend, it will be 1 year or half-yearly. the cost for half-year is $40.

for the fuel expenses- cost around $15.00 for 6.5-7 litres. this is good for approx 3-4days depending on ur usage.

maintence cost - you can choose to send it for maintence every 2 months if its problem free. caberattor washing & clearing carbon will cost you $100.

workshop recommended from a friend- 'speedway motors' in bukit batok. they have good service and good quality stuffs.

workshop to avoid - HKL at alexander road near queensway. reason: bad service.

hope that help u a little.:thumb:

Thanks to pyro13 and nyp boy and all for your replies, you clear up so much of my doubts. So according to all your replies, if i buy a first hand bike, i might have to purchase comprehensive insurance, if buy from shop maybe must get at least 2nd party. That means if i buy full cash from private seller will be able to get 3rd party, around 400 for normal bikes and 700 for sportsbikes. Am i right to say so?

Thanks so much for helping out.
